GymnasticsBy MakedaTeam 20Lewis Elementary SchoolIntroduction I chose gymnastics for my survey because I love gymnastics and I’m interested ifother people also like gymnastics. I’m interested in gymnastics because I love the thrilland my mom used to do gymnastics so it got me partially interested too. I like gymnasticsso much because it's a fun sport. I wonder how many people do do gymnastics. Ipredicted that most people wouldn't like/do gymnastics. I predicted that because I don’tknow anybody who does gymnastics. The purpose of my survey was to see if peopleliked gymnastics or not and if not, why. I also wanted to learn if the respondents knowanybody that does gymnastics.Procedure The first step to my survey was to look at articles former Team 20 students hadwritten. We were sort of going back to go forward. We also looked at what the studentswould do differently next time. I opened a Google Doc and I planned 10 survey ideas. Then I chose my best three survey topics and made three thirty second pitches for eachone. For example, “What's your favorite food or dessert?” One question I am consideringis...what's your favorite food or dessert? I am interested in this question because... Itcould help kids with school and home lunch ideas. Others should learn about my findingsbecause… new lunch ideas may be helpful for some parents. Next we K2K2K2K conferenced which means to conference with a group of four.We shared our 30 second pitches and the other kids gave us feedback while we gave themfeedback. Then, we conferenced with Mr. Mark. Mr. Mark also gave us feedback andthen we decided our main survey topic based off of the feedback we got. After that wewent on to Google Forms to create our survey. Next, we made some sub-questions. Aswe made our surveys we thought about how we could create our survey around ouraudience like the age of the people taking our surveys. Next we only K2K conferencedthis time instead of K2K2K2K conferenced and we conferenced with Mr. Mark. Soon wecollected our data and took others surveys as they took ours. Next we analyzed our dataand started getting ready for making these articles in another Google Doc. We had to turnoff our accepting responses button. Soon we got to the Tell Others step. We put all of ourdata into these articles. We K2K conferenced and conferenced with Mr. Mark about oursurvey articles. My article had a plan, a rough draft, and then an edited final copy. Wepublished our article which had five sections. The first section was the introduction, thenthe procedure, the results, interpreting results, and last but not least was the newdirections. Results

My survey results were very complicated and it was challenging to understand butI figured it out. One question I gave was “What's your age?” Most responders were inthe age group of 5 to 10 years old. Next was the group that was 10 to 15 years old, then, last there was six people that were 20 years old or older. My next question was “Do youcurrently do gymnastics?” About 15% of respondents said they currently do gymnastics. After that I asked “If not currently, have you done gymnastics before?” 51.5% of people(just more than half) used to do gymnastics. Then I asked “If not currently would you dogymnastics if you could?” Less than half of the respondents said that they wouldn't dogymnastics if they could. After that I asked “If you don't do gymnastics why not?” 11people said they don't do gymnastics because they are not interested. Seven people saidthey don't know why and other was tied with I don’t know why. Five people said they'renot fit. After that I asked “Do you know anyone who does gymnastics?” 35.3% of peopleknow one person who does gymnastics, 32.4% of people know two or more people andnine people aren't sure. But two people said they don't know anyone who doesgymnastics. I asked people to list any gymnastics moves they have heard of. I made topiclists of themes as we call them. Some common said moves were, back flips and backwalkovers or anything back which got 12 responses. Front walkovers and front flips, etc.got eight responses and cartwheels got 11. I asked if they made it to the Olympics would they be brave or chicken out and ¾of the respondents said they would be brave and ¼ said that they would chicken out. Iasked if you had ever read a book about gymnastics and 25 (73.5%) of responders said noand 14.7% of people thought so and 11.8% said yes. I wanted to know the title of thebook and I got the books Gold Medal Summer, The Guide to Gymnastics and last I gotGymnastics. I wanted to know how good the book was on a scale of one to ten. One washorrible and ten was amazing. Most books were about a six or one and three and two tied.Five, seven and ten each got one vote. One of the problems I had with collecting my datawas when I asked the question “List all the gymnastics moves you had heard of.” It waschallenging because I sort of needed to give categories to it which was confusing andhard. Another challenge was putting it all into words and sentences. It was challengingbecause some results were confusing.Interpreting Results I thought that most people hadn't done gymnastics when they were younger butsurprisingly a good amount of people had. I thought there would have been less gymnastsin the past because I don’t know very many people who do gym. I also thought that itwould be more consistent across the ages you can choose in my survey but most peoplewhere in the age of five to ten or in the age of ten to 15. I thought that because I know alot of adults and children who could of took the survey, but I don’t think they did take mysurvey. One surprise I had was that I didn't think so many adults would take my survey oreven notice it. A second surprise I had was I don’t really know anyone that did my surveyunless I myself asked them to, I didn't ask many people to do it. Just close friends andfamily. If I were to do my survey again I would maybe put my questions in a differentorder and make them more clear to read. I'd do that because I noticed that some of my

questions were a little questionable and confusing. I’d also do differently in the part whenI asked about a book, I’d probably leave that part out. A third thing I would do differentlyis make the age groups a little different. One of the age groups was 5-10 and another was10-15. If you were ten (like a lot of people in our class) which one would they choose?New Directions A new survey I could make off of this one is probably one about sports in generalor one about your favorite book series, genre, or just book because I had books come upin my survey and I’d like to learn more about nature or future jobs that you may want. Icould even do a survey about those too. I also would like to learn more about bizarrejobs and animals. I could even make more surveys in the future and I never thought thatmaking a survey would be so fun! All of those ideas would be good for surveys! What People Do Over Summer?By SamTeam 20Lewis Elementary SchoolIntroduction I choose to do my survey on what people like to do over summer because I likesummer break. Summer break is wonderful because you can do anything water related. Inwinter the water in a water balloon would freeze. The water in a pool would become anice rink. If you shot a Super Soaker, the water would freeze in mid-air. Summerbeverages are cold in a good way. I wouldn’t want to drink hot cocoa in summer. Iwould rather drink chocolate milk. It’s like the perfect temperature for summer. Of mydrink preferences, I predicted that the favorite summer drink was lemonade. I predictedthat people would want to eat ice cream, want to swim at Great Wolf Lodge, fold a lot oflaundry (because of needing to wash swim trunks so often), and I think a good summerboard game would be chess (because you get sweat towels, which looks cool). Thepurpose of my survey was to learn what people like to do over summer.Procedure To begin my survey project, I read example surveys by prior Team 20 kids. Then Istarted it on Google Docs. I continued with the idea. Then we figured out what we have.We started the steps to our survey. We brainstormed ten questions the picked our bestthree. Then we had made 30 second pitches using Google Docs. We had a K2K2K2Kconference. When we were done with that we used Google Forms to create our surveys.During our survey making we added questions and hint text. After that we had requiredquestions, set who could respond and conferenced again. We took surveys to collect dataother people took our surveys. Next we analyzed our data by reading our responses and

taking quick notes in a Google Doc. After that we told others by writing this journalarticle. Results I found out that about what people like to drink over summer. 50% of people liketo drink lemonade during the summer and 25% of people like to drink root beer oversummer break. It was surprising that 18.8% of people drank other things. 6.3% of peopledrank cold water. It was weird because I thought that more people would like cold water. For what people eat, I found out that 62.5% of people like to eat ice cream, 15.6% ofpeople like to eat ice cream, 12.5% of people like to eat other foods, 9.4% of people liketo eat burgers, and weirdly 0% of people like to eat hot dogs. After that I found out wherepeople would like to swim. 48.3% of people like to swim at Great Wolf Lodge, 21.9% ofpeople would like to swim at the Mount Scott Pool, 12.5% of chose other, and 6.3% ofpeople cannot swim. That was surprising that 2 of 32 people cannot swim. For age81.3% of people were ages 5 to 15. 25% of people were 25 to 39. 6.3% of people were40 to 60.What Do You Like to Do For Fun?By SethTeam 20Lewis Elementary SchoolIntroduction I chose to do my survey because it would be interesting and it would be good forpeople so they could look at what would be fun to do. I want to know what people like todo in their lives and other people should know what people like to do because it willmake people have stronger relationships with their friends and family. I predicted that alot of people would like a lot of different things. The purpose of my survey is to find outwhat people like to do and see if I like what they like.Procedure The first step to our surveys was to go back to go forward which meant we had toread survey examples from last year. We talked about the steps to a survey and wethought about what they would of done different. Then we talked as a team to design oursurvey. After that we needed to plan our survey. We went to our Google Docs andthought of at least ten possible topics and then we chose the best three and made three 30second pitches. We conferenced with our table group so we can pick the best topic. Thenwe conferenced with Mr. Mark. After that we made an outline of our survey questions.Next we had to create our survey. We went to Google Forms and added some questionslike some multiple choice questions or paragraph check boxes and linear scale, and thenwe added some hint text. Next we had to collect data so everyone had to take each other's

surveys and make responses. Then we needed to analyze our data. First we need to turnof responses and read the responses. Then we read them again and took quick notes inour Google Doc. We coded the written responses by trying to notice different topics. Then we told others by writing a article that you are reading right now!ResultsDoing this survey I found out what people like to do for fun. Half the people that took mysurvey were 5 to 10 years old and about one quarter of the people were 10 to 20 yearsold. The rest of the people (about 20 percent) were 20 to 90 years old. For the question“What sport do you like?” most people (44%) prefer soccer. Basketball was there secondfavorite at 29%, baseball and golf where both 14%. My next question was about books.50% of people that took my survey prefer to read fiction. Nonfiction, comics, and graphicnovels were about the same. 58% of people that took my survey cook for fun and 14%don’t like to cook for fun. The rest of the people that took my survey don’t cook at all. For the question “If you like to cook for fun what do you like to cook?” 8 peoplewrote desserts like cake and cookies, 4 people wrote they would cook anything, 2 peoplewrote soups, and 4 people liked to cook meats. Some people wrote something thatcouldn't fit in a theme like pizza, creme brulee, kale chips fish, waffles, or calzones. For people’s favorite board games, 9 people liked Monopoly, 6 people liked chess, 4people liked the game Clue and Battleship, 3 people wrote Sorry and Connect 4, and 2people liked checkers Apples to Apples, Twister, Trivial Pursuit and Mancala. For stuffpeople find relaxing, 7 people liked art, 10 wrote watching T.V. and movies, 6 peoplewrote video games, 6 people find sleeping and reading relaxing. The problem I hadcollecting data was that there were so many different things! It took so long to name allof them but I did itInterpreting Results I think that my prediction was completely right because it was that a lot of peoplewould like a lot of different things. There were so many different answers but whatsurprised me was that I didn't have any surprises. If I were to do this project again Iwould ask a lot more questions and be a lot more specific because I would get a lot moreinformation if I did that.New DirectionsIf I were to do another survey I would like to do it on what people's favorite animals arebecause I would like to learn what cool animals other people like. What’s Your Favorite Sea Creature?By AidenTeam 20Lewis Elementary School

Introduction I chose to do my survey on favorite sea creatures because I am really interested insea creatures. My favorite sea creature is the longhorn cowfish. I originally wanted to dofavorite fish for my survey but I wanted to have a wider variety of animals. For reason, Ichose the question, “What is your favorite sea creature?” I predicted that that peoplewould choose types of colorful fish because I think that they’ll think of more colorfulcreatures more than duller creatures. The purpose of my survey is to see how manypeople will choose endangered sea creatures or ones that are doing fine.Procedure The first step of my survey was to look at survey examples. When we werelooking at our survey examples we used the phrase, “Go back to go forward.” What wemeant was by looking back at articles by prior Team 20 kids we could to build off of thetheir work and how they designed their project. The second thing we did was plan oursurvey. We brainstormed 10 questions or more. We chose three of the best questions andwrote three 30 second pitches. After we wrote, we conferenced K2K2K2K2K. When wewere conferencing, we read our 30 second pitches to each other. After that we saidcompliments about our pitches, we chose the one that sounded the best and made themost sense. After that we went into Google Forms to create our surveys. When we werewriting our questions on Google Forms some of the questions were “Are you a memberof team 20?” and “How old are you?” After we wrote our questions we often wrote a whyquestion to get more data. Our next step was to collect data. It included us taking eachother's surveys. After a couple weeks we looked at our responses. When it was time weturned off responses so no one else could take our survey while we were analyzing data. Then I read my responses and took quick notes. While I was taking quick notes I lookedfor possible themes and wrote them down. After that it was time to tell others and I wrotethe article you are now reading. Results In my results I found out about people’s favorite sea creatures. Six people statedthat they liked fish, three seals, two sea otters, two whales, three invertebrates (animalswithout backbones), three sea turtles, two dolphins, three sharks, one megalodon, and onemanatee. I noticed that most people, 17 total, chose their creatures because of its talents orthings they can do or things that are unique to that creature. For example, someone wrote,“It can puff up.” A second theme I noticed for why people chose their creature is howthey look. For example, someone wrote, “Because the otter looks cute when it swims inthe water.” Another person wrote something that did not fit either theme, but wasinteresting, “I learned about manatees in a book when I was young and then saw them inFlorida.” About 53 percent of the people who took my survey have seen the creature theychose. On the question, “How much do you know about your creature?” I used a scale ofone to five. One meant that “I hardly know anything about my creature.” Five meant “I

know a whole bunch about my creature.” Nine percent of the people chose a two or three, three percent of the people know a four, about four percent knew a five. I found that 30percent of the people wanted to learn about their creatures predators, about 26 percentwanted to learn about it habits and 23 percent of the people wanted to learn other.Interpreting ResultsIn my survey, one predictions I had was that most people would chose creatures becauseof their colors or how they look but I was wrong. Most people chose their creaturebecause of its talents and things that are unique about that creature. I think the reasonwhy most people chose these characteristics is because so many of these creatures can dounique things or have unique traits. For example someone wrote, “It can puff up” aboutthe puffer fish. Another example is someone wrote, “I like how unique they are and theylook different from all the other creatures in the sea.” In my survey I had a couplesurprises like sharks got some of the most votes and there were even several blobfishvotes. If I got to do my survey again I would put on the question, “Have you seen thecreature you choose?” an option that says that you saw it in person.New Directions If I could do my survey again I would do “What's your favorite fish?” because Inever got really what I was looking for. Another survey I could do instead of “What'syour favorite fish?” is “What's your favorite animal?” These would be good surveys toobecause I might get more animal vocabulary and I might get what I was looking for.Educational GamesBy BryceTeam 20Lewis Elementary SchoolIntroduction I made a survey about educational games because I think kids will like learningmore than if we didn't have these learning games. In Team 20 at most points in time youcan see us playing games like Typing Club, Woot Math, Ken-ken, or Shikaku Madness. Ilike Shikaku Madness the most. I predicted people would like math games because I likemath and I think other kids like it as well. The purpose of my survey was to find moreabout people’s favorite education games are.Procedure Our first step was to read survey examples. We met as a team and discussed whatkids would have done differently with their surveys from last year and designed oursurvey. We kind of said go back to go forward, which meant we use what prior writersdid to help us make our surveys. The second step was to plan our survey. We opened a

new Google Doc to start brainstorming ideas. We made three 30 second pitches. Then weconferenced with three other kids and Mr. Mark. We also created an outline for oursurveys. Then we created our surveys. We opened a new Google Form and addeddifferent kinds of questions like short answer, paragraph, multiple choice, checkboxes, and linear scale. We also used hint text, required questions, and set who can respond. Wealso thought about our audience. Then we conferenced K2K and with Mr. Mark. Our nextstep was to collect our data. We took other people's surveys and other people took oursurveys. Once we were all done with answering surveys we looked at our responses. Ournext step was to analyze our data. So we made quick notes. We used our quick notes towrite our results. Then we told others, that was when we wrote this journal article on oursurvey project. Results When I was doing my survey, my first question was, “Are you from Team 20?”and found out that more people from Team 20 took my survey than outside of Team 20.My second question was, “Do you play any of the following online educational games?”The results were the most played games were Woot Math (80%) and Typing Club(76.7%). My third question was, “Which of these is your favorite?” The answers were thetwo most liked are Woot Math (43.3%) and Typing Club 30%. My fourth question was,“Which of these would you recommend to a friend?” The two most recommend wereTyping Club (63.3%) and Woot Math (60%). About half the respondents know of otherlearning games like Moby Max, XtraMath, Adapted Mind, Duolingo, Game AboutSquares, 2048, ABCYA, all of the games on pbskids.com. Seven of the 15 games namedwere math related that I know about. There are also lots of games I don’t know about. Forexample Moby Max, XtraMath, Adapted Mind, and Duolingo.Interpreting Results The results of my survey didn’t compare with what expected. I thought TypingClub would get the least votes instead of Shikaku Madness or Ken-ken. I thoughtShikaku Madness, Ken-ken, and Woot Math would have ranked 1-3 on the scale. I wouldhave ranked them #1-3. I thought most of the respondents would have known morelearning games. But I was wrong only (46.7%) of the respondents knew of other learninggames. If I did this project again I would have put more “I don’t do any of the following”options.New Directions Now that I have my results I will see what kind of games they are like math, writing, history, and social studies. My next survey I would have done is “What is yourfavorite school subject?” or “What are fun ways to be taught?” If I would have done thissurvey again I would have put more questions, made it more open ended, and includemore “I don’t play that” or “I don’t know about that” responses.
