ไปถึงกรุงพนมเปญ จากที่น่ันคณะซิสเตอร์นั่งแท็กซี่ไปสีหนุ วิลล์ คุณพ่อวีระชัย ศรีประมงค์ให้การต้อนรับและขอให ้ ซิสเตอร์พักที่ศูนย์เข้าเงียบจนกว่าซิสเตอร์จะหาที่อยู่ได ้ ขณะน้ันพระคุณเจ้าราโมสไปประชุมที่จัดข้ึนโดยคณะสงฆ์ มิสซังต่างประเทศแห่งกรุงปารีส (Paris Foreign Mission) ที่มาดากาสก้า วันต่อมาคุณพ่อวีระชัยพาซิสเตอร์ไปตระเวน รอบเมอื งเพอ่ื หาบา้ นเชา่ อกี ทำเชน่ นเ้ี ปน็ เวลา 2 วนั กไ็ มส่ ามารถ หาบ้านได้ มีบ้านให้เช่าหลายหลังแต่ค่าเช่าก็แพงมากเกิน กว่างบประมาณท่ีซิสเตอร์มี ในท่ีสุดคณะซิสเตอร์ก็ตัดสินใจ เชา่ บา้ นในบริเวณโบสถ์ ในวันเดยี วกันน้นั พระคุณเจ้าราโมส ท่ีเพิ่งกลับมาจากมาดากาสก้าก็โทรศัพท์มาจากพนมเปญ ท่านดีใจที่ซิสเตอร์มา แต่ก็รู้สึกว่าซิสเตอร์ไม่น่าจะเช่าบ้าน อยู่ในบริเวณโบสถ์เพราะว่าจะอยู่ไกลจากกลุ่มเป้าหมาย หลังอาหารเที่ยงวันเดียวกันน้ัน คุณพ่อวีระชัยก็พาซิสเตอร์ ออกไปหาบ้านเช่าอีกคร้ัง ขณะที่กำลังขับรถอยู่ในเมือง ซิสเตอร์ก็เห็นป้าย “บ้านว่างให้เช่า” คณะซิสเตอร์จึงเข้าไปดู บ้านน้ัน เจ้าของบ้านเป็นศิษย์เก่าดอนบอสโก เธอบอกว่า คนเช่าเก่าเพิ่งออกไปและเธอยินดีให้เราเช่าบ้านนั้นในราคา 300 เหรียญสหรัฐ คุณพ่อวีระชัยและซิสเตอร์พอใจกับบ้าน หลังน้ันเพราะอยู่ใกล้กับหมู่บ้านพนมเขียวซึ่งเป็นบริเวณที่มี การขายบริการและเยาวสตรีเหล่านั้นก็อาศัยอยู่ในบริเวณ ใกล้ๆ เย็นวันน้นั กไ็ ด้ทำสัญญาเช่ากับเจา้ ของบา้ น 51 50GSP.indd 51 1/21/58 BE 8:46 PM

[เสกบา้ นทส่ี ีหนวุ ิล กมั พชู า] ซิสเตอร์มิแชล โลเปซ ร่วมกับเจ้าหน้าท่ี 3 คน ได้ เร่ิมพันธกิจศูนย์ธารชีวิตของคณะศรีชุมพาบาลในประเทศ กัมพูชา เรามีโปรแกรมท่ีออกแบบเพ่ือป้องกันการตกเป็น เหยอ่ื ของการคา้ มนษุ ยแ์ ละโปรแกรมเพอ่ื ตอบสนองตอ่ ความ ต้องการของชุมชนในหลายรูปแบบ เจ้าหน้าที่ของเราสอน วิชาชีพเช่น เสริมสวย ตัดเย็บเสอ้ื ผา้ ทำอาหาร เรารบั งานตดั เย็บเส้ือผ้าจากศูนย์ฟาติมาพึ่งพาตนเองท่ีกรุงเทพฯ มาทำ อย่างสมำ่ เสมอ ทำให้สตรที ่นี ่ีมโี อกาสฝึกทกั ษะงานฝีมือและ มีรายได้จากงานที่ทำด้วย ทุกๆ เย็นเราสอนภาษาอังกฤษให้ เด็กและผู้ใหญ่ มีคนมาเรียนกับเราประมาณ 150 คน เรา สอนภาษากัมพูชาสำหรับเด็กๆ ชาวเวียดนามท่ีมีสัญชาติ กัมพูชาที่อ่านเขียนภาษากัมพูชาไม่ได้ ทุกวันเจ้าหน้าที่ของ เราออกไปสอนสตรีและเยาวสตรีท่ีทำงานในบาร์ นอกจากนี้ 53 50GSP.indd 53 1/21/58 BE 8:46 PM

2 ปีต่อมา ในปี ค.ศ.2006 (2549) พระสังฆราช โยเซฟ ประธาน ศรดี ารณุ ศลี ประมขุ สงั ฆมณฑลสรุ าษฎรธ์ านี ได้เชิญคณะภคินีศรีชุมพาบาลอย่างเป็นทางการเพ่ือร่วม งานอภิบาลท่ีภูเก็ต พระสงฆ์คณะรอยแผลศักด์ิสิทธ์ของ พระเยซเู จา้ อนญุ าตใหเ้ ราใชส้ ถานทท่ี ช่ี น้ั 2 และชน้ั 3 ของวดั คาทอลกิ ป่าตองเพื่อเป็นท่ีพักและทำงานเปน็ การชว่ั คราว โครงการทดี่ ำเนินการใน จ.ภเู ก็ต มี 3 โครงการคือ โครงการศูนย์ศรีชุมพาบาลเพ่ือพัฒนาฝึกอาชีพ ป่าตอง เร่ิม ในปี ค.ศ.2006 (2549), โครงการศรีชุมพาบาลบ้านแห่ง ความหวัง เร่ิมปี ค.ศ.2008 (2551), และโครงการศรีชุมพา- บาลเพื่อแรงงานย้ายถิน่ เริม่ ปี ค.ศ.2010 (2553) เมื่อแรกเร่ิมเราได้รับความช่วยเหลือและสนับสนุน เป็นอย่างดีจากพระสงฆ์คณะรอยแผลศักด์ิสิทธ์ของ พระเยซเู จ้า. องค์กรโทรแคร์ ไอรแ์ ลนด์, พระสงั ฆราชไมเคลิ สมิธจากสังฆมลฑลมีธ แห่งไอร์แลนด์ และคาริตัส อิตาลีได้ ใหท้ นุ สนบั สนนุ โครงการของเรา เราขอขอบพระคณุ ทา่ นเหลา่ น้ี จากใจจริง ในปี ค.ศ.2008 (2551) คุณอัลเฟรโด วิลล่าซึ่งเป็น ชาวอิตาเลียน ได้อุทิศบ้านให้แก่โครงการแม่และเด็ก บ้าน หลังน้ีมีช่ือว่า “ศรีชุมพาบาลบ้านแห่งความหวัง” เป็นท่ ี พักพิงให้แก่แม่ที่ต้องเล้ียงลูกโดยลำพังและทารกของเธอ 56 50GSP.indd 56 1/21/58 BE 8:46 PM

ซิสเตอร์ยูเฟรเซีย ดรุณา มีสมกลิ่น ได้ทำงานร่วม กับฆราวาสแพร่ธรรมและอาสาสมัคร เพื่อช่วยให้สตรีและ เยาวสตรีท่ีอยู่ชายขอบของสังคมได้รับการสร้างเสริมพลัง และการปฏบิ ัตอิ ย่างมเี กยี รตแิ ละศักดิ์ศร ี “โครงการบ้านผู้อพยพ” ปี ค.ศ.2010 (2553) สงั ฆมณฑลสรุ าษฎรธ์ านี ไดอ้ ทุ ศิ อาคารศนู ยอ์ ภบิ าลผเู้ ดนิ ทาง ทะเลซ่ึงแม่และเด็กอาศัยอยู่ขณะน้ีให้แก่คณะของเราเพื่อใช้ เป็นศูนย์ในการปฎิบัติงานและเป็นท่ีพักสำหรับผู้ลี้ภัยและ ผู้อพยพท่ียากจนด้วย โดยมีซิสเตอร์ลักขณา สุขสุจิตร และ ซิสเตอร์ยูเฟรเซีย ซานดร้า อาย เป็นผู้ดูแล ในขณะเดียวกัน ซิสเตอร์ลักขณา สุขสุจิตร ได้เร่ิมโครงการการศึกษาสำหรับ ลกู ๆ ของแรงงานยา้ ยถน่ิ จากพมา่ โดยเชา่ ทด่ี นิ ของชาวประมง แถวน้ัน ต่อมาด้วยความช่วยเหลือของผู้มีน้ำใจดีหลายท่าน ส่งผลให้ซิสเตอร์ลักขณา สุขสุจิตร สามารถสร้างตึกท่ีใช้ช่ือ ว่า ศูนย์การเรียนรู้คณะศรีชุมพาบาลเพื่อเด็ก เวลานี้มีเด็ก อยู่ในโครงการประมาณ 160 คน ปัจจุบันมีซิสเตอร์ประจำอยู่ที่บ้านภูเก็ต จำนวน 2 ท่าน ได้แก่ ซิสเตอร์ลักขณา สุขสุจิตร และซิสเตอร์อภิญญา ศรจันทร์ 58 1/21/58 BE 8:46 PM 50GSP.indd 58

มูลนิธบิ า้ นดอกไมป้ ่า เชียงใหม่ บา้ นหลังท่ี 7 ของเขตไทย มูลนิธิบ้านดอกไม้ป่า (Wildflower Home Foundation) ให้บริการแก่แม่ที่ต้องเล้ียงลูกโดยลำพัง รวม ท้ังสตรีและเด็กที่อยู่ในภาวะวิกฤต สตรีเหล่าน้ีส่วนใหญ่ มาจากกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ต่างๆ ในประเทศไทย บางคนไม่เคยมี โอกาสเข้าเรียนในโรงเรียน เราให้ความช่วยเหลือเรื่องที่พัก ให้การศึกษา ให้คำปรึกษา ดูแลสุขภาพ ฝึกอบรมวิชาชีพ และทักษะดา้ นการเกษตร ผู้รับบริการส่วนใหญ่มาจากครอบครัวยากจน อยู่ ในภาวะวิกฤตและมักถูกท้ิงให้ดูแลตัวเองโดยไม่มีครอบครัว สามีหรือคู่ชีวิตให้ความช่วยเหลือใดๆ บางคนหลบหนีจาก 59 50GSP.indd 59 1/21/58 BE 8:46 PM

“BEGINNINGS” Good Shepherd Sisters, Thailand, 1965 BANGKOK The 1st House in Thai Sector From 1961, Mother General, Mother Mary of St.Thomas Lee had been in correspondence with the Redemptorist priests and the Legion of Mary of Holy Redeemer Church , Bangkok, regarding a Good Shepherd foundation in this city. The idea was that the Sisters would work with Dr.Pierra Vejjabhul in her home for unwed mothers. In February 1965, Sr.Kevin Mc Donnell an Irish sister from Singapore and Sr.Benigna Gallant, a Canadian from Kuala Lumpur arrived in Bangkok by plane. They were met at the Don Meung Airport by Fr.Roger Godbout, Mrs.Margaret Maddox, President of the Legion of Mary and Mrs.Celia Wijiyesinghe, a friend of our Sisters in Sri Lanka, and taken to Saint Joseph Convent. 78 50GSP.indd 78 1/21/58 BE 8:47 PM

no longer available and that there was no possibility of them working in the Centres. They returned to Saint Joseph Convent with bag and baggage. Mother General was informed and permission was granted to rent a small house from the De La Salle Brothers in St.Louis Soi 2, off Sathorn Road. The rent for this small house was Bht 3,000 per month. His Excellency, Msgr.Chorin welcomed the Sisters and a few days later His Excellency’s Coadjutor, Rev. J. Nittayo called to welcome them. Sr.Brigid Dwyer arrived by plane from Colombo on February 21st but due to ill health she was sent to Kuala Lumpur in November. On March 1st Sr.Benigna Gallant returned to Kuala Lumpur due to heart failure. On March 20th Srs.Lelia Bergin and Louise Horgan arrived in Bangkok by Cargo Ship from Sri Lanka. In order to pay their house rent they were obliged to give English Tuition at Bht 20 per hour. Khun Lamom Suwannathat, principal of the Redemptorist School, encouraged the students to come and study English with the sisters, starting with her two daughters (Anne and Babette). On May 22nd they received permission to have the Blessed Sacrament in a tiny chapel and little by little their work became known and they received several requests to accept teenagers in need of support, counseling and accommodation. In July a larger house was rented in Soi Langsuan, off Ploenchit Rd., for Bht 3,500 per month. This transfer of dwellings took place on July 31st. At this time we had 22 young girls residing with us. They all slept in one room upstairs and due to lack of funds they survived on 2 meals and 1 snack per day. The girls were asked to get up late around 10 a.m. and their first meal was served around 11 a.m.- breakfast and lunch combined. During the day local volunteers helped to teach the girls, and in order to support themselves they made bead bags which were very fashionable at that time. The bags they made were sold on the street in front of Thai- Daimarue Department Store. The Sisters and girls stood there for hours in the burning heat trying to attract customers. After each sale there was a trip to Chinatown to purchase more beads and the same ritual took place time and time again. The police watched from a distance as they had never seen the Nuns selling things on the street. Our first single mother and her week old son arrived in December 1965. Our work with unwed mothers had begun. The number of girls needing help increased so our need for bigger accommodation was requested. Good Shepherd Sisters to get a proper place of their own so that plans could be formulated to assist the Sisters to provide the urgent support that young girls needed. Home for single mothers and their babies Months later, August 19th, 1966, this request was granted and we were given five rai of land (2 ½ acres) from Bangkok Diocese, near Our Lady of Fatima Church in Din Daeng. Having no cash at hand we travelled out every day with Khun Catherine Lulitanon, a dear Thai friend, to raise funds towards filling in part of the land and to build a home for the needy. This was a difficult task as everywhere we went we were expected to speak Thai, drink glasses of water and eat Durian! At that time people were very poor but they were very kind and generous to us. The Ladies Mission Aid group organized a film show “The Lilies of the Field” to aid us in obtaining funds for our new building plan. Holy Redeemer Parish. The Redemptorist Fathers donated Bht 10,000 and often gave us transport to take the girls for outings. The film show brought us Bht 12,000 in donations. In 1966 the Burmese government gave notice that all foreign missionaries who entered the country after Independence in 1948 should leave the country on expiration of their yearly visas. That year Sr.Bernard Walsh was assigned to our Community on May 15th. 5 Years later she made a visit to her home after having been away for 45 years. During the early years of 1966 and 1967 several international people visited us. Many of our Good Shepherd Sisters and Columban Fathers and Brothers expelled from Burma visited us as well. It was sad to hear how they felt on leaving their beloved Mission so desolate. By this time we had a number of Thai ladies interested in supporting our work. Among these were Khun Angeline Peterson, Khun Marguerita Lotz, Khun Margaret Maddox, Khun Catherine Lulitanon, Khun Lamon Suwannathat, Khun Alice Larsen and Khun Elsa Komkrit. The Ursuline Sisters and many of the local priests, Paul De Chart Sisters were very kind to us and supplied us with provisions regularly. Throughout the year we continued to fund raise and by the end of 1967 filling in of the land started. Msgr.William Tan, a parish priest of Assumption Cathedral offered to buy all of the materials for the building and engaged Nai Bua to supervise for us. St.Joseph was daily implored to see that all the bills were paid on time! In December the Ladies Mission Aid Group held their Annual fun fair at Holy Redeemer Parish. our girls knitted. We had difficulty in selling them because no one pair looked alike! It was very funny. Khun Celine and Khun Anake Michael noticed that the Sisters hadn’t sold anything since morning. They told the Sisters to go and get something to eat and they volunteered to sell for us. When we returned, all the things were sold and we got 4,300 baht which helped towards the building fund. In 1968 in union with our whole Congregation, we were also preparing for the One Hundredth anniversary of our saintly Mother Foundress’ death, Sermons on Saint Mary Euphrasia and her work were preached in Xavier Hall, Holy Redeemer Church and Assumption Cathedral on the Sunday before the Feast day. This gave us lots of publicity and brought in donations towards our new home. For several months, ever since the land was blessed by Rev.Fr.Joly, we had been talking about and making plans for our first Good Shepherd Home in Thailand. We continued to raise funds. However, we didn’t even have the money to pay the architect’s fee of 5,000 Baht. Every night Sr.Kevin Mc Donnell and Sr.Louise Horgan sat together and drew house plans meter by meter. drew the plans?” The Sisters replied, “We did it”. He was surprised and said it was well done. Every day a Sister accompanied by one or two girls walked from Soi Langsuan to Din Daeng to see how the work was progressing. At last it was time to move and leave our little old dilapidated house that had been our home for three years. It took us five days to move all of our belongings in a hired “samlor” and on the last day a Thai friend loaded cupboards, tables and the altar that we still use for Mass today in Din Daeng. The blessing of the house and the First Mass was arranged for May 31st, 1968. Feast of our Blessed Lady. Mother Maurice, Provincial from Singapore, Sr.Benigna from Batu Arang, Malaysia, and Rev. Fr.R. Girard, Chaplain of the Provincial Convent, Singapore, arrived a few days earlier for the great occasion. There was a large crowd of Priests, Sisters, Benefactors and Friends present on the 31st May. Our Archbishop J. Nittayo blessed our new home, after which he celebrated Mass with Rev. Fr. M. Michel Langer, Bishop of Nakhon Sawan. When Bishop Langer was Parish Priest of St.Louis’s Church he used to fix lights, water etc. for us. After Mass His Grace explained the nature of our Good Shepherd work and then refreshments were served. The refreshments were all provided by our wonderful benefactors and there was plenty left over for our 45 girls in residential care. On July 27th there was great excitement when we got a present of a car. Unfortunately from the time it arrived at our front door it refused to budge. We called a taxi driver and a bus driver to see what they could do, but no amount of coaxing would get it to move. We returned it to the owner and we continued to travel by bus or on foot. Throughout the year we had several orders of patch-work quilts and we had a few sales for our work. In 1969 our first Thai Postulant, Daruna Meesomklin went to Singapore to make her Novitiate. showed a grand spirit in helping to care for the new- comers. Within the year some left or were taken away by their families. October 15th, 1970, brought us quite an “invasion” of Social Workers. Members of the Catholic Women’s Association and other groups came to visit our centre and to see our work. The party was led by Khunying Ditakan Bhakdi, Chair of the Family Welfare Section, National Council of Social Welfare. They invited us to accompany them to visit Social Welfare Centres in Bangkok and Ayutthaya, and to visit the red light districts in Udon Thani and Dok Khamtai District. As a result of her visit, Khunying Ditakan became a close collaborator in our work for the development of young women. Her husband had just retired from diplomatic service abroad and Khunying Ditakan who was a medical doctor, now had plans to serve Thai society. She asked the Sisters to help train young women from the rural areas. “Bann Sukruthai”In October 1971 the Canadian Embassy donated Bht 200,000 to build a Home for Single Mothers. residence eight mothers and their babies and four pregnant mothers. In November and December 1973 the girl’s grounds were filled in and turf laid. A fine concrete court for Basketball and Volleyball was laid, thus supplying a real need for our teenagers. [Khunying Ditakan Bhakdi] In 1974 we began to work with Buddhist Nuns at the request of Social Welfare Department. On May 28th Two Buddhist Nuns came to live with us. They were anxious to observe our methods in dealing with the girls. They stayed for six weeks and later they opened a Centre for needy girls in Ayutthaya. During their stay with us they invited us to visit The Buddhist Meditation Centre in Pak Nam. They taught us the Buddhist Method of Meditation. In February 1975 Khunying Ditakan requested us to accept and train ten Buddhist Nuns so that they could go out to the Centres in the Provinces to teach teenage girls who were in danger of being lured into the sex industry. During their live-in stay of two months they did an intensive course in dressmaking, needlework and handicrafts. Each day began with Buddhist Meditation for thirty minutes and it was the most interesting time for us. Over the early years we had many Buddhist Nuns trained with us. In January 1976 under the guidance of Khunying Ditakan, the Good Shepherd Sisters, led by Sr.Joan started a “Leadership Training Programme” for village women. This programme ran twice a year with forty to forty five participants including some Buddhist Nuns. Under different Directresses this programme continued until the year 1999. It was funded by an organization called CEBEMO and proved very productive. In September 1977 Sr. Mary Hayden arrived from Macau. She attended the Thai Language School for six months. In 1978 an evaluation of our existing programmes took place including a survey that was done in the neighborhood. Very close to our Convent in Din Daeng there are seventy four blocks of flats housing 4,980 families – all of low income. From this survey “Adult Education and Skill Training Classes” such as hair-dressing, dressmaking, flower arrangement, typing and cookery classes started 93 50GSP.indd 93 1/21/58 BE 8:47 PM

for housewives and girls from the neighborhood. Through the help of Fr.Charlebois, Catholic Relief Service and US Aid, six new classrooms and a new kitchen were built. [Sr. Margaret Mary Brady] [Sr. Louise Horgan] Following from the 1978 survey we discovered the women and young girls in this area needed extra income to support their families. Father Tom Dunleavy, M.M. also requested us to sew 10,000 sets of clothes for Cambodian refugees who took refuge in the camp in Sa Kaeo. At that time there were two classrooms available in the Fatima Church compound. And that was the beginning of “Fatima Self Help Center”. we had to close down the Center to make room for a new Soi (Road). After the Fatima Room was closed the women asked us to continue to help them. A questionnaire was developed and handed out to 672 families. Many women sought help and the results were as Follows: 68 Dressmaking, 62 Cooking, 35 Adult Education, 24 Flower making, 16 Embroidery and 13 Hairdressing. After much discernment a shed was built in our compound to provide space for the needy women to learn and earn by sewing and doing handicrafts. During the monsoon season the building would be flooded and material and machines were badly damaged. However we used this shed for over thirty years. Archbishop Cardinal Michael Michai Kitbunchu who was always supportive of our mission, and who visited us regularly, granted permission to construct a three story building for Fatima Self Help Center. The building was blessed on 31st May 2007. In 1979 another event took place. Our old garage was demolished and a new building was constructed for candidates interested in joining us or trying out their vocation. Also in 1979 a new convent was built. All the refugees who had escaped from the disastrous Pol Pot Regime in Cambodia were ill from their months in the jungles and from starvation. Many died during their first weeks from Malaria or typhoid or dysentery or exhaustion. The Sisters’ days were spent picking up dead bodies and trying to find water and food for those still living but unable to go to the food Centres. Each day the number of dead bodies was increasing at an alarming rate. This experience was a horrific nightmare for the Sisters. 96 50GSP.indd 96 1/21/58 BE 8:47 PM

[Refugee Camps] Garments continued to be manufactured in Fatima Centre. Catholic Relief Sercives(CRS) gave us orders for large quantities of clothing for the refugees. We had to work around the clock to fulfill the orders. We also had to prepare five trucks with thousands of packages to be sent to the refugee camp in Sa Kaeo. Often the Sisters had to travel with the truck to make sure that the packages were delivered safely to the refugee. In 1980 it became necessary to construct a little “Day Care Centre” for the children of our Working Mothers. While the women worked in 97 50GSP.indd 97 1/21/58 BE 8:47 PM

the Fatima Centre their children were cared for in the Day Care Centre. This Facility had grown over the years as more and more impoverished children from the surrounding slum area had been admitted to the Centre where they were taught moral studies and hygiene as well as the normal kindergarten curriculum. They were also provided with a nutritious meal daily in a loving environment. “Educational Programme for the Children of the Asylum Seekers” In 2012, The Good Shepherd Sisters were requested to work with COERR Organization and UNHCR by organizing the Educational Programme for the children of the Asylum Seekers. In order to do this we organized classes for two hundred children: one hundred in the morning and one hundred in the afternoon. Their lessons included - Thai, English, Mathematics and Social & Cultural Studies. These children could expect to be in Thailand for four to five years before being accepted into a third country. We officially started this programme on March 4th, 2014. Presently, there are eight Sisters in Good Shepherd Convent, Bangkok, Sister Yanee Phanurak, Sister Louise Horgan, Sister Bonaventure Mirasol, Dr. Sister Euphrasia Mesomklin, Sister Maria Immaculata Sister Jantana Jantorn, Sister Jintana Phimsan, and Sister Orapin Huadsree 98 50GSP.indd 98 1/21/58 BE 8:47 PM

NONGKHAI The 2nd House in Thai Sector In 1980, Fr.Richard Thiele, the Redemptorist parish priest of Nongkhai, appealed to the Good Shepherd Provincial at that time, Sr. Juliana Devoy, to grant permission for sisters to be sent from Bangkok to help out with the Laotian refugees in Nongkhai. Bishop George Phimphisan added his voice and gentle persuasion and Sr. Juliana Devoy committed to starting a second community in February 1981. It became time to spread our wings. September 1981, Sr. Pranee Sitti, left for Nongkhai to visit neighboring villages and to see how the poor could be helped, staying at the time with the Daughters of Charity. Two months later, Sr. Joan and Sr.Margaret Mary arrived and the first ‘community’ moved into rented accommodation. On December 23rd, Sr. Mary Hayden joined them in NongKhai. The first dwelling was on the banks of the Mekong River and when that slipped into the water after only one month of habitation, the Sisters moved into a rental house in Soi Yod Gao where they resided for two years. 99 50GSP.indd 99 1/21/58 BE 8:47 PM

Land was eventually found for the convent in Prachak Road and the foundation stone was laid by Redemptorist priest, Fr. Vichian. It would be true to say, that the Redemptorist Order have been part of our foundations here in Thailand and have continued to accompany our efforts over the years. The blessing of the convent took place in October 1983-two years after our arrival. The Sisters were befriended by the Director of Catholic Relief Services, Khun Suvan Boonthae who is described as, “a true friend to all who needed his services”. Khun Suvan remained a faithful friend, advisor and problem solver, until his untimely death in 2006. Each sister answered to the signs of the time: Sr.Joan, Sr.Pranee and candidates worked in Huai Suam(Bueng Kan Province at present) and the Laotian refugee camp nearby. In March 1982, the villagers constructed a bamboo building for training local women and our first skills training, income generation project began in HuaiSuam.
