BS5839-1:2017 recommends a zone plan is sited at every control panel location. 4 QDOS Setting The Standard in Compliant Fire Safety Plans What is a Fire Alarm Zone Plan? A fire alarm zone plan is a diagrammatic representation of the building showing at least the building entrances, the main circulation areas and the division into zones. These should be sited next to each CIE (Control & Indicating Equipment), which is any fire alarm control panel or fire alarm repeater panel location. Every fire alarm system should display the zone as the primary indication of an alarm, usually in the form of an LED illuminated on the fire alarm control panel. The fire alarm zone plan is displayed next to the control panel, to guide the user or attending fire and rescue service directly to the zone of the fire alarm activation. Why are they needed? Fire alarm zone plans are essential to translate the illuminated zone LED on the fire alarm control panel into an identifiable area of the building, to facilitate the quickest and safest response to an alarm condition. In accordance with BS5839-1:2017, when a competent person or company carries out the maintenance on any fire alarm system it is required that a missing zone plan should be recorded as a major non-compliance.

Ideal for hotels, student accommodation, multi-occupancy offices, educational buildings and many more public or commercial establishments, these plans are intended to be displayed as signs in public areas and workplaces from the point of the user. QDOS has been working with the Trust since 2015, providing fire evacuation plans for each of its sites. Marshall Sharp, Senior Campus Manager was delighted with the plans the team at QDOS produced stating that; “The plans are really clear, easy to read and understand. Each academy within the Trust is different, they each have their own emergency evacuation procedures which QDOS successfully translated into effective plans”. Fire safety is of course a top priority for the Trust, but the plans have other uses too. Marshall says; “Plans are located in classrooms, offices, canteens, and areas where students may congregate and not only detail the emergency evacuation routes, but locations of first aid boxes, fire extinguishers, defibrillators, etc. and are also a good reference point for our new intake of students each year in getting to know their new surroundings.” Five years on since the first plans were developed and installed, QDOS continues to provide the Trust with updated plans to reflect any changes to layouts within their school buildings, which also supports the Trust in ensuring it is fully compliant with fire management legislation.

10 QDOS Setting The Standard in Compliant Fire Safety Plans Premises Information From the information needed for Premises Information Boxes to the externally displayed Premises Information Plates on high-rise buildings, QDOS provides them all. Following the publication of the Grenfell Tower Phase 1 Report, it is recommended that the owner and manager of every high-rise residential building be required by law to provide their local fire & rescue services with up-to-date plans of every floor of the building identifying the location of key fire safety systems. Within the premises information box (PIB), the emergency response pack should contain up-to-date floor plans showing facilities, such as control equipment for smoke control systems, service shut-off controls, etc. We can provide these plans, including symbols and notations, in accordance with guidance from local fire and rescue authorities and the Fire Industry Association. Premises Information Plates for external use A Premises Information Plate (PIP) displays the relevant information needed for the attending Fire & Rescue service and aids in the rapid understanding of the building layout, with the correct orientation and marked with a ‘You Are Here’ point and road names adjacent to the building. With 8 high-rise residential blocks within their building stock, they were looking to improve the information available to the attending fire & rescue service should an emergency occur.
