Some years ago, at the urging of family, I found myself in the rooms of an eminent professor at the Black Dog Institute in Sydney’s Randwick. That day I finally had the definitive diagnosis of a mood disorder that had rocked my life for as long as I can remember…….. People like me and there are many, have the Black Dog Institute, a trail blazing entity, to show us the light with research and treatments for mental illness, and that there IS treatment for mental illness and for agonising depression and anxiety Here are some sobering statistics: It is estimated 1 in 5 Australians suffer from mental illness at some time. The most common…... depression and anxiety On average, 58 Australians take their lives each week. The LGBTI Community suicide attempts are three times higher than the general population Suicide rates for our indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders are double the rate of the non- indigenous. Suicide is the leading cause of death ages 15 to 44. Rates of seeking help, particularly amongst men are low. Suicide amongst our first responders are weekly It is one of my goals in life to RID STIGMA about mental illness in the community. Depression and anxiety are not a sign of weakness. SPEAK OUT, CALL FOR HELP and if you are concerned about someone ASK and ASK again. The Black dog Institute is non—profit organisation. The research is considered at the forefront of this field in the world. It is spearheading Australia’s largest suicide prevention trial—Lifespan.
