Julianne lives in Avalon, NSW and her hero is her GP, Dr Paul Klemes, who never missed a beat in his care for Julianne during the COVID-19 outbreaks. “We forget our GPs sometimes. They too are our first responders.” She also thanks her QANTAS friends, and the Avalon community (otherwise known as being in the Upper Republic of the Northern Beaches in Sydney). Her greatest love is her son Sam. Julianne is donating all profits from this book to The Black Dog Institute for Mental Health and Research. She hopes to donate more of her time to the Institute, and has completed courses in neuroscience and psychopathology at Boston’s Harvard University

Mark Lynch Cartoonist and Chef Born sometime during the last century, Mark left school at the age of 14, albeit at the request of the Marist Brothers. His country had plans for him a few years later when he endured a period of indentured servitude. (Nasho) Upon being discharged from the army, the next nineteen years were spent as a Qantas flight attendant which he describes as being like in an exotic beer commercial in a series of exotic locations. He then became the daily editorial cartoonist for The Australian newspaper. A career change beckoned, (another term for ‘brain explosion!) and he left to buy a restaurant in Paddington, Sydney. Until this time, hard work and Mark had never met, but ten years in that game convinced him to part ways with it amicably and open his pencil box again. Mark Has won 57 National and international cartooning awards, including National cartoon of the year (twice) and the prestigious Stanley award for Australia’s best single gag cartoonist. His work appears worldwide and has been published in journals such as Readers Digest, The Washington Post, People, Woman’s World, Bauer Media and News Ltd and has been viewed by 17 million people per day at Germany’s Rail Terminals. He has published eleven books, the latest being the critically acclaimed, ‘The Wit and Wisdom of Donald J. Trump. (The J is for genius)’ Mark Resides in Sydney, Australia with his wife Jennifer, and sons, Patrick and Jack.

Some years ago, at the urging of family, I found myself in the rooms of an eminent professor at the Black Dog Institute in Sydney’s Randwick. That day I finally had the definitive diagnosis of a mood disorder that had rocked my life for as long as I can remember…….. People like me and there are many, have the Black Dog Institute, a trail blazing entity, to show us the light with research and treatments for mental illness, and that there IS treatment for mental illness and for agonising depression and anxiety Here are some sobering statistics: It is estimated 1 in 5 Australians suffer from mental illness at some time. The most common…... depression and anxiety On average, 58 Australians take their lives each week. The LGBTI Community suicide attempts are three times higher than the general population Suicide rates for our indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders are double the rate of the non- indigenous. Suicide is the leading cause of death ages 15 to 44. Rates of seeking help, particularly amongst men are low. Suicide amongst our first responders are weekly It is one of my goals in life to RID STIGMA about mental illness in the community. Depression and anxiety are not a sign of weakness. SPEAK OUT, CALL FOR HELP and if you are concerned about someone ASK and ASK again. The Black dog Institute is non—profit organisation. The research is considered at the forefront of this field in the world. It is spearheading Australia’s largest suicide prevention trial—Lifespan. The Institute values our support and those that advocate for people like me and help reduce mental illness and those who donate, thank you We as Australians should be proud to have this world leading Institution on our shores. In Australia, if you or someone you know is in imminent danger, contact the following services: Emergency 000 Lifeline 131114 Kids helpline 1800 55 1800 Men’s Helpline 1300 789978 Suicide Call Back Service 1300659467 Mark Lynch and I are proud to support the black Dog Institute and 100% of net profit from Barbies4Blokes goes to the Institute’s research and education, to raise awareness and create real world solutions. It is important that you know Black Dog Institute cannot endorse this book and this is in perpetuity, but In every way the organisation has been wonderful and supportive of our efforts.
