CrRaAzZyY aAbBoOuUtT sSpPoOrRtTsS? Do you like chess? How long can you play when you’re really enjoying a match? A few hours? All day? The longest chess match took place between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov. The match began on 10 September, 1984 and finished on 15 February, 1985. Kasparov and Karpov played 48 games in five months, but there wasn’t a winner – a man called Florencio Campomanes decided to stop the match because he was worried about the two players. Everyone knows that you play chess sitting down, but you don’t sit down when you’re playing sports like football and basketball. So, what do you think about a really long football match – 169 hours long? That’s seven days! It happened in 2019 in Wales, in the UK. And, in the Philippines in 2014, a basketball match took place and the two teams played for 120 hours, 1 minute and 7 seconds! I get tired just thinking about those matches! Is sailing your favourite activity? Well, the Volvo Ocean Race across the earth’s different seas is a 72,000 km race. Do you want to try it? You have to know lots of things, and you’re going to be away for nine months. But that isn’t the longest journey in a sailing boat. A long time ago, in 1978, Reid Stowe built a boat. (He had a plan to go around the world, but he had to wait). He left New Jersey, in the USA, in 2007. In 2010, Stowe finished his journey after travelling the world’s oceans for 1,152 days! 50
