Practice 1 1 Read the text and choose the correct answers. Why do we love memes? Memes are everywhere, and they are addictive. Grumpy Cat, Batman slapping Robin, and the Ice Bucket Challenge are some of the memes that have flooded the Internet. An Internet meme, more commonly known simply as meme, is a digital file that is spread through the Internet. It is usually a combination of image and a concept or catchphrase, but it can also be a photo, a video or a hashtag. They’re a worldwide social phenomenon. They’re a way of connecting with people across the Internet. There are natural disaster memes, animal memes, celebrity memes, etc. They represent the thoughts and feelings of a specific audience and they’re ideal for the digital age. Meme lovers have formed an enormous fan club on the Internet. However, not any image with a text can qualify as a meme. For something to become a meme, it must be copied and recreated multiple times. It has to be shared on the Internet massively and probably get creatively changed on the way. The most successful memes spread quickly, and last a long time. You can share a meme by uploading it on your social media page. But what makes them so funny? And are they truly funny or do we just try to make ourselves laugh to fit into our peer group? Nowadays, people love to laugh together about something, which is why these memes are popular. Memes are very appealing because they take seconds to read, they’re funny and easily shared, and they’re a familiar part of social media. The Ice Bucket Challenge, which went viral on social media in 2014, is an example of a popular meme that could be easily reproduced without specific instructions to follow. Most people can download apps on their smartphones or computers and then copy, share, and adapt their favourite meme countless times. This allows a meme to evolve and stay popular even longer. Since the average person reportedly spends nearly two hours on social media every day, it makes sense for businesses to use memes in their marketing strategy. Memes are definitely age-specific. If you use a meme to advertise your business, you must be careful not to target the wrong audience. The success will depend on how carefully you match the message of the meme with the interests of the specific age groups. People’s sense of humour changes as they age. Studies show that memes take up a lot of Internet users’ time. A research team from Indiana University has designed a tool which tracks memes while they are spreading and being adapted online. Findings show that memes’ journeys are often considerably long. Reports also note that memes have a distinct social character. It’s an interesting way for people to comment on things that concern them. Through sharing memes, people share experiences and interact with each other. In a way, people reproduce what matters to them at a given moment, even if what matters may sometimes be a silly joke. 12

B to reproduce what others have done D people downloaded on their C to find new friends on social media smartphones. D to share ideas about popular trends 2 Read and complete the text. Write one word in each gap. Negative comments on social media How (1) people usually respond to the negative comments they receive on their social media accounts? Do they ignore them or do they argue with the person who posted them? Responses usually depend (2) the nature of the comments and the specific situation. But the answer to the question ‘Should you reply to criticism?’ is definitely ‘Yes’. It’s impossible to avoid criticism nowadays. But you should always stand up (3) yourself. Leaving criticism without a reply gives more power to the negative statement (4) it may deserve. If you do (5) want to respond publicly, you can send a private message, which is indeed a brilliant tool. On the other hand, for (6) important issues, replying publicly is a great way to present and justify your point of view. Be humorous and show the lighter side of yourself. Use your judgment to work out which method would work (7) for you. You shouldn’t have to delete (8) comments. It’s unlikely to make the person go away, and it may even motivate them to post more.
