Time Expressions • We often use time expressions with the present simple to show when we do something. every day / night / week / month / spring / year at the weekend / at night in the morning(s) / afternoon(s) / evening(s) on Saturday(s) • Time expressions can go at the beginning or the end of a sentence. Every summer, I stay with my grandparents. I don’t go out with my friends at night. Lesson 1 Present Simple, Time Expressions, Adverbs of Frequency Adverbs of Frequency • W e use adverbs of frequency with the present simple to talk about how often we do something. I usually meet my friends at a café. Sally often goes to the shops with her sister. • A dverbs of frequency go before main verbs, but after the verb to be. It sometimes rains here in the summer. She is flying to London. • When a verb ends in -e, we delete the -e before adding -ing. use ➝ using come ➝ coming • W hen a verb has one syllable and it ends in one vowel followed by a consonant, we double the final consonant before adding -ing. get ➝ getting stop ➝ stopping • When there are two vowels before the final consonant, we don’t double the consonant. feel ➝ feeling read ➝ reading • W hen a verb has two syllables and it ends in one vowel followed by a consonant and the final syllable is stressed, we double the final consonant before adding -ing. begin ➝ beginning • When the final syllable is not stressed, we don’t double the final consonant before adding -ing. listen ➝ listening 18

• W hen a verb ends in -l, we double the -l before adding -ing. travel ➝ travelling • W hen a verb ends in -ie, we delete the the -ie and add -y before adding -ing. die ➝ dying • In the negative, we put not after am / is / are and before the main verb with -ing. We don’t use them with the present continuous even when we are talking about something that is happening now. I want that game. • Stative verbs can describe: - emotions: hate, like, love, want We love your costume. It’s amazing! - thinking: forget, know, remember, think, understand I’m sorry. I don’t know the answer. - senses: feel, hear, see, smell, taste These flowers smell nice. • Other stative verbs are: believe, belong to, cost, have (= own), hope, look (= appear), mean, need, prefer, sound.
