Our World Unit 10 Reading Read the fact sheet and answer the questions. The Boreal Forests Did you know that the Boreal forests are some of the oldest forests in the world? Read this fact sheet to learn more about them. What are the Boreal forests? Imagine you are up in the sky. You are looking down on the earth and you think, ‘What are those large green areas?’. The answer is, ‘The Boreal forests!’. The Boreal forests grow in many countries like Russia, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. The Canadian Boreal forest grows in Canada, and it covers more than 50% of the country. What is in the Canadian Boreal forest? Trees, lots and lots of trees, and other plants too! But that isn’t all. First, the forest has a lot of lakes – it’s hard to believe, but the Canadian Boreal forest has more than 1,500,000 lakes – that’s a lot of lakes! There are lots of big rivers in the forest too. More than 130 different kinds of fish swim in these lakes and rivers. Are you afraid of animals … big animals? Yes? Then it isn’t a good idea to visit the Canadian Boreal forest because some of the biggest animals in the world live there. More than 85 different kinds of animals – big and small – live in the forest. A lot of birds live there too – more than 300 different kinds of them. What is the weather like in the Canadian Boreal forest? I think you’ll say the answer to that question is, ‘It’s cold!’. And that’s right, it is very cold most of the time. During the winter months, it is often around -20°C in the Canadian Boreal forest. The winters there are very long too, but it doesn’t rain very often. The summers in the forest are short.
