16 LITERARY Hewlett Franchesca Lucille Andal I’ve grown up with rain as my comfort. I thanked the skies when it poured, uncaring of to whom it may also fall. But as I became unmasked to the reality, I now take the rain as a sign of rebirth, revival… new beginnings. I’ve lost track of how many paper boats I wasn’t able to play in the gentle stream of rain. I’ve lost track of the rhythm the rainfall makes along the chilling growl of the sky. I’ve already lost track of all the countless jumping, dodging on puddles, and splashing of water. It was once a cloud nine, but a melancholy now. But it has also become a reminder for me to appreciate the bright majestic colors after the gloomy weeping sky. Red, like my burning passion for creating evocative ties, Orange, like the warmth of being embraced again, and the bravery to keep one at a distance, Yellow, like the incomparable happiness of finally being understood; like the bright sun that I wake to every morning, Green, like the sign of growth as I lose another; like a tree with its withering leaves falling to rest, Blue, like feeling at peace as we’ve set boundaries and build trust again; like the rewarding clear sky after the storm’s fury, Indigo, like the night sky, despite the fear which softly lingered within me, I found peace, Violet, like the mystery behind the uniqueness of something that echoes understanding, balance of enthusiasm and tranquility. I’ve never lost track of these 7 colors as it means new beginnings. The sky gave me a sign to keep going after it wept. This sign of hope, rebirth, and reconnection, no matter how bold or faded it has appeared, it promised a clear sky tomorrow. Illustration by: Viviene Marie C. Carcia PSYCHE SENSE

22 FEATURE PANDEMIC AFT Impact of COVID-19 Rhyna Ella M. Reyes Even after a year later, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to make its presence known despite humanity’s attempts to fight back. While the battle rages on, another unseen force is lurking in the shadows to strike the world at its weakest, rendering them at the mercy of another pandemic; a surge in mental health cases. Despite the introduction of vaccines in early March, the COVID-19 situation in the Philippines has not improved. Through its “COVID-19 Tracker,” the Department of Health has documented 2,756,923 total cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines as of October 25, 2021. There are still 60,957 active cases, 2,654,173 recovered cases, and 41, 793 fatalities among the total. Furthermore, according to Inquirer.net, the Philippines was placed last out of 121 countries in infection management, mobility, and immunization in the infamous Tokyo-based financial magazine “Nikkei Asia’s newest COVID-19 Recovery Index” published on September 30, 2021, with Malta ranking first. With the situation at hand, it suffices to say that the spike in mental health cases is a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Filipinos suffer as problems escalate despite their best efforts to create better living conditions during the health crisis. It is more difficult to identify as the symptoms are not obvious to the naked eye and even more difficult to solve in a nation where internalized stigma persists and mental facilities are scarce. SILENT CRIES OF THE FALLEN Beyond the aforementioned statistics are real people being affected by the circumstance that the country is stuck in. An increasing number of people are losing their jobs, struggling in poverty in one of the Philippine’s economic crises. Reported on June 8, 2021, the Philippine Statistics Authority revealed that the unemployment rate increased to 8.7% in April 2021, indicating that 4.14 million Filipinos are jobless under the greatest health and economic crises in recent history. More and more people are desperate to find ways to provide food on the table for their families. Moreover, the working population is not alone in suffering this pandemic. Students also report feeling burned out and experiencing mental health issues as they struggle to keep up with digital classes despite their circumstances, which include a lack of financial resources to cover data, electricity, and wifi costs, a family situation, and a lack of peer connection. On the other hand, behind the COVID-19 fatalities are the families and friends left behind to mourn for their untimely death. Most of them struggle accepting the loss as they were unable to stay beside them in their last moments due to COVID restrictions. On the same topic, on top of gaining trauma over being unable to save numerous patients, healthcare workers also have to struggle with understaffing, overfatigue, and lack of benefits. Additionally, the lack of better treatment caused them to rally last August 30, along España Boulevard in Manila, questioning the delay of COVID-19 benefits meant for them. These are only a few of the circumstances of the Filipinos suffering within the pandemic. Cases of domestic violence, sexual harassment, suicide, and many others are also worth mentioning as numbers rapidly increase. OVER AND UNDER: STIGMA AND MENTAL FACILITIES Being unprepared over the mental health pandemic starts with being unable to accept that it exists. Although the internalized stigma rooted in Filipino society is finally being addressed by the newer generation, it still lurks in the shadows of an average Filipino home. Tanaka et al. (2018) classified stigma as an influence of public belief into three themes: (1) familial disputes that end up with rejecting or disowning the mentally ill member, (2) unrealistic belief that one has to simply overcome the psychological suffering by themselves otherwise, it is deemed as a severe physical impairment, and (3) expecting a person to recover in a short amount of time. Looking deeper into the stigma, it could be the reason why there is a lack of mental health facilities within the country. As the services are stigmatized, many psychology graduates seek better opportunities in other countries and fields. Furthermore, there are insufficient efforts to develop and sustain mental healthcare within the country. Maravilla and Tan (2021) analyzed the recently passed Mental Health Act within the Philippines and found out that it only devotes 5% of healthcare spending to mental health, suggesting there are around 7.76 hospital beds and 0.41 psychiatrists per 100,000 people. With the stigma and mishandling of mental health care within the country, many of those suffering in silence continue to fight alone as fear overpowers their desire to seek help. It is plausible that while the COVID-19 pandemic has come to an end, the underlying mental health crisis is likely to persist. The pandemic within the Philippines began with a simple error of failing to acknowledge the presence of the virus and the lack of a concrete and long-term pandemic plan. One can only hope the Philippines does not commit the same mistake by ignoring the unseen force bringing Filipinos to their knees with tears on their eyes and silent screams for help. A.Y. 2020-2021
