Page 2RAISING VOICES ALL OVER THE WORLDThe Girls’ Choir began in the early 60’s by Shirley Thompson Carter with a belief that excellence of music would developchildren’s lives. The Choir held its first auditions at four city Recreation Centers in Fort Worth and held rehearsals at Riverside RecreationCenter. The Choir was founded with a membership of sixteen girls ages eight through twelve. Within three months thesesixteen girls were presented in Concert, gaining the interest of girls and citizens in Fort Worth. The Choir soon doubled inmembership, and in the fall of 1962, the Girls’ Choir became the Fort Worth Girls’ Choir. The Choir home was moved to the Downtown YWCA in 1962 where Ms. Carter worked as a YWCA Director in order thatthe choir might have a place to rehearse. The Choir, being new and with no real financial support, has grown through the support of parents and citizens, and theFounder’s belief that the most valuable asset in the world is a child’s life.May 24, 1965, the Texas Girls’ Choir was incorporated as a non-profit educational music program. And now, after fifty-fiveyears, there is not another children’s choir that has traveled as extensively, performed as many major works, recorded asmany records, CD’s (100+), and taped as many television shows, and loves children, their state and their United States asmuch as your Texas Girls’ Choir. After moving the rehearsals from Central Methodist Church to Magnolia Avenue Christian Church, and then First BaptistChurch, the Texas Girls’ Choir in 1973 purchased their permanent home at 4449 Camp Bowie Blvd. Many citizens rallied tohelp pay for the 33,000-square foot structure, which has been developed into a performing arts center with a concert andrecital hall, rehearsal and class rooms, a kitchen and Bistro, and office spaces. The Texas Girls’ Choir continues to grow in stature through its musical accomplishments and other educational programs.Music Clinic, Etiquette classes, Officer/Leadership Training and the numerous facets of Choir organization are incorporatedto develop outstanding citizens.Through the 55 years, the Internationally Famous Texas Girls’ Choir has performed in every corner of our beautiful state andover 55 countries, in major concert halls, on national and international television, at colleges and universities, Carnegie Halland before royalty. The New York Times said, “The Texas Girls’ Choir put on quite a show. The 35 attractive girls, ageeight to twelve did well. Their tone was clear and the enunciation excellent.” Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali ofThailand received the Texas Girls’ Choir while they toured the Orient, inviting them to tea and a command performance.KXAS-TV toured with the Texas Girls’ Choir to Israel and Greece, and to the Orient, visiting Taiwan, Hong Kong, thePhilippines and the Republic of China. Page 32 CONGRATULATIONS Chanel Hurd Scholarship Recipient of the 2017 “Debi Weir Music Scholarship at Texas Wesleyan University”I am without doubt honored to be the first recipient of the Debi Weir Texas Wesleyan University Scholarship. I was with the choir fromFall 2009 to Spring 2015 and in this time learned what it meant to be a Texas Girls' Choir member. From the beginning we were taughtmany life lessons: stay with your buddy, blend with your buddy and always watch the conductor. I will never forget the time I was taken offstage to be taught the importance of the watch your conductor lesson by Debi. It was in that moment I started taking everything seriouslyat choir.During the February concert in 2010, Layne came up to me and asked how I felt being moved to concert choir. She said her and Debitalked about it and thought I was ready to take my next big step as a Texas Girls' Choir member. I of course said yes, and began attendingconcert choir rehearsals the following week. Both Layne and Debi (I don't believe I ever told them face to face) were the first to give memy confidence that I have today. From then on, I started to believe in myself more. I started au- ditioning for solos at school and in choir. In 2011, I went on my first short tour to New York City and that audition was nerve racking. Nevertheless, I got through it and in a few month we were on the plane headed that way. Another lesson I was taught here: if you want it you must work for it. Financially, I struggled to pay for this trip so my family and I started working at Traders Village through the choir building to raise money for the trip. From then and till I left choir I worked at Traders Village to make my dreams of traveling come true. There are more than this page worth of memories that I have from the Texas Girls' Choir but I wanted to tell a little about how this choir truly made me who I am today. With all the trips I took, friends I made and still have, and musical knowledge, this choir changed me for the better. When it came time to take my Last Bow I had no idea where I was going next in life. I heard of Texas Wesleyan University through people at choir. Debi, Layne and even a few ex-choirmembers have gone through this university. When it came time for my audition, one of the solo pieces I sang was a song I learned hereat choir. I was accepted into the Texas Wesleyan music department and my life there has been beyond amazing. I received a musicscholarship, won first place in local NATS, worked at the administration building in the Provost Office (with Amber Coronado and CaitlinPavey, two ex-choir girls), became a President's Ambassador and recently became a Resident Assistant. Keeping up with my busy life issometimes hard but I never give up because people like Debi and Layne never gave up on me. This scholarship will help me in other waysthan just paying off a school debt. This summer I will be taking my second study abroad at Texas Wesleyan. This scholarship will help me pay for the expenses. We will betraveling to Germany and Poland and last year I visited Russia. I will be the first to say loud and proud that I will continue to wear my fannypack on every trip that I take for the rest of my life; another life lesson. I wish I could say more than thank you and God bless an amazingorganization such as the Texas Girls' Choir but I will end with these words that are true to my heart, \"Because I knew you, I have beenchanged for good.\"

The choir’s success is attributed to 1962 to 2002 the many Texans who have a great love for good music and/or a love for little girls. The importance of music reaches beyond the imagination from the standpoint of a nation, state, city or an individ- ual as to its effectiveness, as will become apparent to all who come in contact with the choir. For truly the greatest asset we have in the world today…is not gold or silver or reaching a distant planet but rather, it is a human life, a young life…a little girl. The Founder’s life was changed because she came to know a higher being through music. In addition, music taught her disci- pline, and much happiness was attained. Something good should be shared, and so it is with music through the Texas Girls’ Choir. As you read this handbook, perhaps you will realize the purpose of the choir program and the benefits that come to a young girl who is a member. It was the Founder’s hope that you and others will con- tinue her legacy of building little girls’ lives through the excellence of music that will add culture to our city, to the State of Texas and even to the world. Shirley Carter LAST BOW RECEPTION The Last Bow: A special time when we honor Concert Choir girls who are leaving the Choir and have completed all require-ments and have toured the state, nationally or abroad with the Texas Girls’ Choir. Some girls have been in the Choir for seven or eight years and taking a “Last Bow” is indeed special. Everyone is invited to a reception to honor our2017 Last Bow girls at the Texas Girls’ Choir building immediately following the concert.
