OANA Convention 2017 Page 5 O n behalf of Obudu Association in North America (OANA), I welcome all of you to the third annual convention of this great association. As usual, many of you made it here through deep personal sacrifice of time and resources. I especially want to thank our invited guest for honoring our invitation. We do appreciate your time and kind gesture. O budu Association began as a discussion in 2014 by a group of individuals who felt the need to form a forum for building our community. Consequently, this association was born in July of 2014 with the sole vision of harnessing our collective talents to lead and facilitate self- BARBARA OBOT sustaining programs for Obudu community at home and abroad. PRESIDENT D uring the past three years, under my leadership and a relentless\"Coming together is the beginning, keeping executive committee we have witnessed a tremendous growth and together is a progress and working together is a success”…Henry Ford several accomplishments. Permit me to highlight some of our accomplishment during the past three years. Our Identity: Most of you will agree with me that most associations of this kind take years to have their group registered with thestate. Within three months of inauguration, OANA was fully registered with the state of Texas as a Non-Profitorganization and obtained a 501 ‘C’ 3 status - from the IRS.C ommunications & Logistics - Since most of our members are spread across the continental United State, it was critical that we have a constant way to engage and share information. During the first three months of ourexistences in addition to obtaining our identity, we instituted our quarterly meeting through teleconferences. Wedesigned a powerful and highly interactive website for members to voice their opinion, pay their dues, obtain or shareinformation freely, and download documents like the by- laws etc. Our Social media feed - Facebook and Twitter nowhas over 700 “likes” and followers. Members can use any branch of Wells Fargo bank to make their contributions. Thesecombined efforts has made us a true net zero distance organization. Our women also have ‘WhatsApp’ page for instant communications. Last December, our women came together in a big way to recognize and celebrate one another through a gift exchange program. I hope we continue with thisgesture of kindness towards one another.Project & fund raising - With the momentum and enthusiasm of our committed members, we have been able to raise enough funds to rehabilitate the Tuberculosis (TB) Center in Obudu Local Government area, of Cross RiverState. The TB Unit was established by the Catholic Missionaries in 1956 as an addition to the Leprosy Unit. Over theyears, this place was neglected and was in a state of disrepair. OANA was able to raise $10,000 to provide relief to thecenter’s patrons. OANA provided just what the patrons of the center wanted. Building four (4) new Bathrooms and toilets Restored 20 hospital beds, furnished with pillows, blankets and mosquito nets . Restored and painted patients’ rooms as well as flooring Expanded and restored the roof and floor of the chapel for worship services which serves both the residents of the TB center and residents from neighboring villages. OANA Convention 2017 Page 7 This year, we are now embarking on another bold initiative, which includes the restoration of Elementary Schools in Obudu, Cross River State Nigeria. This project will include, 1) Restoring the Roofs and floors of four classroom buildings 2) Building 300 wooden seating benches and desk for the students andBARBARA OBOT 3) Providing school supplies like notebooks and pencils. PRESIDENT I am very optimistic about the future of our association. I urge all of us to rally around and commit to supporting the new executive committee. There is one thing I will tell you having been in the receiving end , until you are in a position to make a decision having all the facts in front of you, you will not know how a decision was made. Let’s stop the politics of\"Coming together is the beginning, keeping criticizing and complaining, but instead come forward with ideas on how to together is a progress and working solve issues and most of all follow through with our commitments. In the together is a success”…Henry Ford words of Henry Ford “Coming together is the beginning, keepingtogether is a progress and working together is a success”. Let’s all resolve to be a part of our success story. We do notwant to write our story without you. We need all the suggestions that we can get to make this association first classcommunity where our children will be proud to associate.F inally, I will like to thank all those who contributed to make this convention a memorable one.I will like to thank my number fan club “Team Obot” for their unwavering support this past three years. A very big thank you to my IT director, Mr. Bassey Obot for putting up with my excessive request and time lines, – designing andmaintaining our website, our program booklets, working with the artist to get our logo right, designing our stationery, raffletickets, and our step and repeat banner are examples of his hard work. My gratitude will not be complete withoutmentioning the contributions and unwavering support of Dr. Genevieve Aglazor for her work in organizing and leading ourTB project.I extend my gratitude to the Board of Trustees and all OANA members who worked and supported me and my executives to make these three years a success.Y our sacrifices may seems insignificant and small in the eyes of the world, but in the minds of your benefactors, the forgotten and downtrodden of Obudu community, you have not only become their heroes, you have literally lived themost important commandment of God whom we all worship “for as long as ye have done it unto the least of mypeople, ye have done it unto me”. I say congratulations for a job well done and keep up the good work.F inally, let me also use this chance to give a big thank you to my executive committee for unwavering support for the vision of our association.A s we enjoy the gala tonight, may we have a new awakening in our hearts as to why we have this association. A journey of a thousand miles, as we know, always begins with just one step. Certainly, we have a lot to do, but as long as wekeep our minds focused on the right reasons, we will certainly get to our destination.Thank you everyone and welcome back to Houston.M ay God bless OANA, may God bless Cross River State of Nigeria and may God continue to bless the United States of America.
