LEIGH ANN MCCLURE With Over 35 Show Choir Performances, The Lone Star Show Choir Invitational Is The Largest And Longest-Running Contest Of Its Kind In The Southwest. As Such, We Try To Do Things The Texas Way–Bigger And Bolder! Lone sTar invitaTional 2022 | 9 LSI 2022 JUDGES Adam Zrust Dr. Adam Zrust is the recently appointed professor of Choral Music Education at Northwest Missouri State University, where he conducts the University Chorale, Madraliers/Celebration Show Choir, and teach specialized courses in music education. Previously, he served on the faculty of the University of Central Missouri for four years, where he was Director of Choral Activities and Voice Area Coordinator. As a teacher, he has had opportunities to instruct in both secondary and post-secondary settings. Prior to his collegiate teaching, he was Director of Choirs at Mansfield Legacy High School in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. During his six-year tenure at Legacy, the program doubled in size, expanding from three choirs to six, and ensembles under his direction were frequent “sweepstakes” winners at their annual performance assessment. He was also honored twice as a finalist for “Teacher of the Year.” Dr. Zrust maintains an active schedule conducting honor choirs and is frequently invited to present at various conferences across the United States and abroad. Recently, he conducted honor choirs in Nebraska, Virginia, Florida, and Missouri. In 2018, he was the featured clinician for the Montana Choral Directors Association, providing five plenary sessions for their annual fall conference. Also in 2018, he was an invited guest conductor of the Nairobi Chamber Chorus in Nairobi, Kenya, in partnership with the Festival Singers of Florida, for a benefit concert in support of the global peace movement called AVoice4Peace. More recently, the UCM Concert Choir performed by invitation at the 2019 Xi’an International Choral Festival and Conference in Xi’an, China. Dr. Zrust earned a PhD in Choral Conducting and Music Education from Florida State University, and an MME from Florida State University. Additionally, he holds degrees in Music Business and Music Education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, Missouri Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education. He lives in Missouri with his wife, Kate Zrust, and two-year-old twin sons, Benjamin and Samuel. Ben Eklund Ben Eklund is a freelance choreographer residing in Omaha, Nebraska. Growing up in nationally recognized choral environments sparked his passion for working in the show choir industry. After graduating from Lincoln Southwest High School, he went on to study Music Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Currently, Ben designs shows, choreographs, and clinics for a number of schools across the country. These schools have earned finals appearances, best vocals, best choreography, and grand champion honors. The past 5 summers, Ben was given the privilege to choreograph a group at the Nebraska Show Choir Camp, He has also had the opportunity to choreograph for the Missouri All- State Show Choir. When choreography season slows down, Ben often spends his weekends traveling around the Midwest judging competitions and attending NBA games with his wife Melissa. Previously, he has judged for FAME, Heart of America, and many other prestigious competitions. He feels truly blessed to work with such talented directors and fine young performers. Lone sTar invitaTional 2022 | 10 Josh Powell Josh Powell is in his seventeenth year as a music educator and his eighth year as the head choral director at Legacy High School. During Josh’s eight years at Legacy, the choirs have earned numerous Sweepstakes trophies at UIL Concert/Sightreading competition, won Best in Class and Best Overall awards at state festivals, been named the Overall Winner of the Duncan Oklahoma Show Choir Invitational, frequently made finals in the Lone Star Show Choir Invitational, and had many singers selected to All-State vocal ensembles. The Chamber Choir was also awarded the coveted Grand Champion title at the Festival di Voce held at Dallas Baptist University. Josh holds a Bachelor of Vocal Music Education degree from Texas Tech University and a Master of Music Education degree from Southern Methodist University. When not working with young musicians as a director, clinician, or adjudicator, Josh enjoys spending time with his wife and fellow music-educator, Christi, their 8th grade daughter, Emmie, and their dogs Hildi and Percy. Jen Randall Jen Randall in her 19th year as a choral music educator. Randall is a graduate of the University of Nebraska where she was a founding member of Big Red Singers show choir, SAI Kappa Chapter President, and a member of University Singers. From 2005 to 2016, Jen was a 6A choral director in Texas where she started four show choirs; including Central High School’s “Voices of Central.” Summer 2016, she relocated to South Dakota to take over “Friend de Coup” show choir and vocal music duties in Mitchell. 2019 saw a move back to Texas to be near family and to create Show Collective. With her company, she tours the country doing clinic/consulting work for show choirs and provides professional development for show choir professionals. Randall’s book, The Art of Competitive Show Choir was published by GIA Publications in June of 2020. She and her husband Tim have two sons: Ben and Owen, and the four enjoy having family adventures in the Lone Star State and beyond. the 13th Lone star show choir competition | High School

Lone sTar invitaTional 2022 | 11 LSI 2022 JUDGES CONTINUED Tenor and Conductor, Rico D. Hamilton, is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, home of the first ever “Show Choir Competition”! There he had a well –rooted education in Traditional Choir, Vocal Jazz, and Competitive Show Choir. He has been involved in the Show Choir world for as long as he can remember and has served in positions varying from student, music arranger, back-up band director, choreographer, and director to clinician. He has performed and conducted many musical theatre and oratorio productions and performed many roles including Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in Ragtime, Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, and several others. He has traveled abroad performing in such locations as China, Canada, Memphis, TN, and Petoskey, MI. Mr. Hamilton acquired his undergraduate degree in Voice Music Education, minoring in Conducting, and in addition has extended study in Ethnomusicology at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, IN. While there, he studied voice with the renowned Mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, was mentored in conducting by Dr. Michael Schwartzkopf and served as the Vocal coach for JMuse Productionz, a student-run Production Company. Mr. Hamilton has won numerous competitions and festivals and has used his gifts to inspire and educate. He has been in Texas educating young musicians for 10 years and loves his new home! Currently he is the Head Choral Director of the Singing Eagles at Rowlett High School (DFW Area). Rico D. Hamilton Steph Hyatt is a freelance choreographer and clinician originally from Ankeny, Iowa now based out of Denver, Colorado. She attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln where she studied vocal performance and dance. Steph has worked with over 30 ensembles across the country over the past 10 years & highly values the artistic and educational elements of show choir. In 2016, she won the fame aspire Award for the best new choreographer. She has also been a clinician at various summer music camps, including the University of Nebraska show choir camp. Outside of show choir, Steph recently received her yoga teacher certification and is beginning a meditation and mindfulness business. She can also be found singing in the Denver choir league and at the Gaylor Rockies Resort, or hiking & camping somewhere in the mountains. she cant wait to see what everyone has to share on stage today! Steph Hyatt Tyler Gruttemeyer (He/Him) received his bachelor’s of Music Education Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (#GBR) in the spring of 2013, and his Masters in Educational Psychology (with an emphasis in Teaching Applications) from the University of Northern Colorado in 2021. He is currently in his eighth year as the Director of Vocal Music activities at South High School in Omaha, Nebraska. At South, he directs both the Freshman and Concert Choirs, Chamber Singers, The Ambassadors Show Choir, private voice class, and serves as the Music Director of the South Summer Musical productions (In the Heights – 2017, Once on this Island – 2018, Westside Story – 2019). Zander, Z-man, Z-daddy, Zoos!!! For six years, we’ve watched you sing and dance on the show choir stage. You sang everything would turn out fine as Lone Star’s best male soloist in Vox’s debut and then counted stars the next year in Harmonics. And your future was made of virtual insanity in Voltage. In VOC, you knew not everybody was kung fu fighting, then had one night only to just dance and finally welcomed folks as Big Tex. Each year they compete in many local, regional, and national competitions and host their own event, the Lone Star Show Choir Invitational. In February, VOC was the first show choir ever invited to perform for the Texas Music Educators Convention. This year’s show is choreographed by Ben and Melissa Eklund, designed by Jen Randall, and features the musical arrangements of John Burlace. The show, entitled “Texas,” is a show choir journey across the diverse regions of our home state. As we explore, we also celebrate the musical styles and artists who help make Texas so unique!
