OANA CONVENTION JULY 26-27, 2019 Page 6 President Welcome Remarks Josephat Ajang - President Welcome to Obudu Association in North America (OANA). OANA was launched in 2014 as a nonprofit association. The association is made up of mostly indigenes of Obudu with an impressive background endowed with a good wealth of knowledge and experiences to make positive contributions towards the wellbeing and the growth of the organization. Briefly speaking, we are consistently striving to build a palpable trusting relationship among ourselves in order to bring out the best in us and to work collectively as a team in the effort to accomplish our mission. In a nutshell, our mission is to give back something to improve the quality of life for the community that we (in reference to many of us) hailed from. Since the founding of the association, we have been working collectively to identify projects that are feasible and raising the funds necessary to execute them. Two years ago, we took on the project of revamping a Leprosy Colony that was in a deplorable condition from lack of maintenance. We built toilets, showers, renovated and expanded the chapel and provided new beddings for the residents. Currently, we have identified a primary school with a multitude of problems involving school buildings with leaking roofs, some severely cracked classroom floors and with no sitting desks for the pupils. Our goal is to raise money to execute this project between now and the end of next year. We also have in the making a youth program that brings our children together to know themselves and form a network that would become beneficial to them in the future. We remain cautiously optimistic that we can leverage the wealth of knowledge and experiences of our membership to accomplish things imagined and still to be imagined. Given that we properly manage this aspect of our human resources well, there is a good chance of progressively transforming the welfare outlook for the community we left behind and at the same time make a positive contribution to the communities in the diaspora. We are the ambassadors of our community to the rest of the world. The ethos of our enlightened hospitality shall be the judge on how well we live up to this responsibility. Thanks to all of you.
