Mission and vision BOIL is a real-life test and experimentation environment for user-driven open innovation. BOIL enables the co‐creation of user‐driven and Open Data based research, development, and innovation of technologies, products, and services focused on the well-being of people. BOIL will also apply user-driven innovation in policymaking by integrating the OpenStreetMap platform, open spatial data, non-geospatial data, open government and non-government data produced by different government and non-government agencies. With a vision to build a community that supports the Open Data and uptake of the Living Lab paradigm and empowers everyone to innovate, BOIL focuses on collecting information and achieved experiences on community issues all over Bangladesh and bring the information on the open platform in a spatial and non-spatial manner to enhance the coordination among the concerned agencies as well as the cross-boundary. Background With the aim of bringing all the awesome work done in various sectors under the same wing, different enthusiastic and expert individuals from a variety of backgrounds joined together back in 2016 to build this organization and gave it a formal structure in 2018 to deal with the innovation-related project and also to provide technical support. Approach & strengths Our approach relies on solving real-world problems through the proper utilization of open data & open source technologies wherever possible using various open data platforms like ODK, KOBO. Ensuring the participation of people from the root by providing easy-to-use mobile- based applications, while building partnerships with like-minded organizations and communities all over the world at the same time. Recent Projects Exploring second Order impact of COVID-19 on Urban Population in Dhaka City under “Cities' Covid Mitigation Mapping (C2M2)” Project The Cities’ COVID Mitigation Mapping program (C2M2) builds on global networks of geospatial experts to analyze second-order impacts of COVID-19. The goal of this program is to increase the capacity to understand the distribution and gaps in resources available to vulnerable populations in urban communities. This program has three regional hubs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, where select local organizations, with regional geospatial and community development expertise, identify and work with various local project partners to develop and guide C2M2 projects in each region. BOIL was selected as a country partner for Bangladesh to take the initiative forward. Client: Mapgive initiative of US Dept. of State| American Association of Geographers (AAG)| Kathmandu Living Labs (KLL) Budget: USD. 64000 Development of Mobile-Based Field Data Collection Application and Online based “Accelerated Water and Sanitation for All (ASWA II)” project process monitoring and reporting Platform BOIL in partnership with OSMBDF and Streamstech consulted the UNICEF Bangladesh team on the development of a Mobile-based field-level data collection application and a web-based project process monitoring platform for their ASWAII program implemented in 52 unions throughout Bangladesh. Later the platform was replicated for their WASH program in 14 more unions in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar district. BOIL supported with GIS integration to the platform along with field data collection monitoring, data level QC, analysis, and capacity development to the implementation partner teams from CARE, Practical Action, DSK, NGOF, Green Hill, and DPHE. BOIL team also supported the UNICEF WASH team in facilitating “National Handwashing Day” with School inventory and call center support. Geo-tagged Structural Survey & Building level Data collection for developing Resilience Model against Earthquake Vulnerability for Dhaka City For the development of an effective AI-based Resilience model for Dhaka city Bangladesh Open Innovation Lab (BOIL) provided support to One Concern, a technology startup from Silicon Valley, USA assigned by World Bank on collecting Geotagged Building Structure level data from all the Wards under Dhaka Metropolitan. BOIL also supported the online tagging, primary modeling & street-level photograph collection process. Client: One Concern, USA; World Bank Group Budget: BDT .4,042,025 Creating Geospatial Pond Database for Local Government Division in Satkhira District BOIL Consulted OSMBDF in the development of the Geospatial Pond Database in Satkhira District for the Local Government Division in support of WaterAid Bangladesh. The assignment included the development of ODK based customized data collection application and deploying an aggregate server for the management of the information, building the capacity of the local people, and ensuring the flow of information from them to the server is another key component and collection & process geotagged data along with 360 images using UAV of all the ponds under District Council. Client: WaterAid Bangladesh Budget: BDT. 2,123,750 Mapping Polder 43/2B area at Patuakhali under Bangla Delta Project & Developing Android-based low scale, easy to use Applications for various Data Collection & Monitoring purpose To improve water management in Bangladesh and develop a new partnership, where experts from the water industry and academia join forces, conducting a study to create a framework for sustainable and climate-resilient polder development. Bangladesh Open Innovation Lab (BOIL) partnered in mapping the hydrological features in the area Polder 43_2B at Amkhola union under Patuakhali to support the assessment & project outcome. The assignment included a collection of household & structural information along with all hydrological features of the union producing a legend-based digitized map for the area. Additionally, BOIL is also assigned for the development of water management applications & tools as a technology and innovation consultant of the project. Mapping Publicly Accessible Toilets in Dhaka city BOIL worked as a consultant with Wateraid Bangladesh in collecting location data for Publicly accessible toilets in Dhaka city. The collected data was post-processed to fuel the android application “Public Toilet BD” developed by WaterAid Bangladesh. Client: WaterAid Bangladesh Budget: BDT. 650,000 Improving health services in the Low-Income Settlements through Geospatial data, a research initiative of the NIHR, UK This project is outlined to verify all the structures of Korail slum in Dhaka city where health is a major concern and thousands of people live in clusters of houses which is a potential area for different diseases. To understand the situation better, NIHR and Warwick University jointly facilitated research in the slum and the purpose of the research is to identify the location and details of medical facilities in the slum. BOIL supported the operation by mapping out each and every structure in the Korail slum area and running a structure verification survey.
