The is truly the most powerful of flowers are blooming, the leaves are budding, and here at Inside them all.” ~ Josiyah Martin Greenville, we’re gearing up for our own new beginning as well. As I mentioned last month, this magazine will officially become Stroll Greenville as of our July issue. The look and feel of the magazine are getting an update, but everything else will stay the same. I will still be your publisher, and we’ll still share exclusive stories of neighborhood residents, pets, student-athletes, local businesses, and more. We’re chock full of those stories this month, as well! From Katie and Tyler Hobbs and their adorable daughter Charlotte to the financial advice of Chris Malmstrom, from the cute bundle of fluff that is the Fludds’ dog Buttercup to our sponsor Aerus of Delaware sharing how they’ve made a difference for Greenville homeowners, we have a great issue in store for you. So turn the page and let these stories and more take you on a virtual stroll through Greenville as you relax and get to know your neighbors. 904 Berkeley Rd. yard of the month As you can tell from the deadlines listed in our publisher’s note, we put these issues together about a month before they come out. That sometimes makes it hard to narrow down our Yard of the Month nominees, especially when we’re talking about the changeover from March’s winter landscapes to the beauty of April flowers. Luckily, this month’s Yard of the Month winner made it easy! In a time of mostly greens and browns, the bright purples and yellows of the pansies lining their walkway were a welcome sign that spring was coming! The cheerful wreath on the door and the interesting colors, textures, and shapes of the mixed media planter only added to the appeal. That’s why we’re proud to name 904 Berkeley Road as this month’s Yard of the Month! Are you always admiring your neighbor’s yard or are you proud of the hard work you’ve done on your own? Give that yard its moment in the sun by sending the address of your nomination to jen@insidegreenville.com. April 2022 • Inside Greenville 13

meet the neighbors The Hobbs Family 14 Inside Greenville • April 2022

According to the old nursery rhyme, “first comes love,” but for Tyler and Katie Hobbs, friendship actually came first. Katie and Tyler met while working in a bagel shop in Maryland, and “we were just friends for the longest time,” says Katie. They had a lot in common, not the least of which was that they were both using the bagel shop as a kind of temporary resting place. “I graduated from Penn State with a degree in restaurant management, so I had been a restaurant manager for a couple of years and kind of just got burned out on it and wanted to do something with better hours that was a little more low-key,” explains Katie. “Tyler was taking time off school and then he went back to school as we started dating and finished his degree in mechanical engineering.” After Tyler earned his degree from UD, he began working with E. J. Deseta, a commercial HVAC company in Wilmington, and the couple decided to move closer to his work. Katie didn’t want to return to the world of restaurant management, so she worked in customer service before finding her true calling in the form of an Etsy shop she started on the side in 2016, “just to be fulfill- ing,” she says. “I would do my art on the side, and then as I got more discontented working at a desk in a windowless office, I thought, ‘How can we make this a full-time thing?’” About a year after she started her shop, Katie took the leap and quit her job in November 2017 to focus on Sunshine Letter Co. Katie’s business started with hand-drawn cards and quotes she’d paint on wood slices, but as her business has grown, so has her artistry. “Over the years, I’ve tried to learn and refine things and get better, so I’ve tried a bit of everything and really found my niche in the last couple years,” Katie says. Her offerings now include original laser cut wood signs, greeting cards, mugs and gifts, as well as wedding calligraphy and décor. Her products are available online on her website (www.sunshineletterco.com) and at Pine & Quill in West Chester, PA. Katie put her skills to good use for her own wedding when she and Tyler got married in October of 2018. About a year and a half later, their first child, Charlotte, was born, right as the pandemic was getting started. That turned out to be a time of great change for the Hobbs family, as it also brought about a career change for Tyler. “In March 2020, they [E. J. Deseta] were putting people on temporary leave and I offered to take one, because I knew I was going to have my daughter and with everything being so unknown, I wanted to be careful,” recalls Tyler. Little did he know that when he was ready to go back a few months later, his job would no longer be there. “By the time I tried to go back in the summer, some of their proj- ects had been cancelled due to the pandemic and they could hire April 2022 • Inside Greenville 15

It’s also given him a lot of experience that has proven useful of late, as the Hobbses have been settling into their new home in Although Tyler says “everyone in this family loves sports,” Katie West Park after leaving their home in the heart of Greenville quickly explains that’s a joke. While Tyler loves Philly sports earlier this year. It was a bittersweet move, but with four pets and English soccer, plays basketball at the HAC, and used to (two dogs, Sadie and Daisy, and two cats, Dewey and Steve), golf, Katie is more likely to spend her days working on her art or their soon-to-be-two-year-old Charlie and her baby brother due playing with Charlie, who has taken swim lessons at HAC and to join them this month, they needed a bit more room. “We were will be attending preschool there in the fall. “He’s very sporty and happy where we were, but with another baby coming along, we I’m very artsy, so we balance each other in that way,” says Katie. were kind of outgrowing our house,” Katie explains. “We decided “There was a brief stint where he was trying to teach me tennis,” we should probably move and try to be settled before we have a she recalls, laughing. “We’ll do mother/daughter lessons when newborn to deal with.” Luckily, Tyler’s dad, George, is a realtor, Charlotte gets older,” promises Tyler. so he was able to be very helpful with finding a home, and once they found their one, things moved very quickly. “It’s fun to have Until then, they’re just enjoying their last few days as a family of neighbors and feel like a part of something,” says Katie. “We like three before their son joins them this month. “She’s so much fun to go on walks and meet people.” at this age; every day is just silly and fun,” smiles Katie. 16 Inside Greenville • April 2022

A Scrumptious Dinner at the SUB-ZERO, COVE, AND WOLF SHOWROOM We started with a rustic pizza-style appetizer while Chef Robert put the finishing touches on the first course, a Cauliflower and Tarragon Bisque topped with homemade popcorn and shallots and accompanied by a crisp Sauvignon Blanc. The soup was the per- fect choice to display the temperature control of the Wolf stove, which let the soup simmer for hours without burning the bottom. Next up was the main course of slow-roasted beef tenderloin with fingerling sweet potatoes and crispy shitake mushrooms, accompanied by a smooth pinot noir. Chef Robert cooked the mushrooms on the range’s griddle, which was impressive, but the tenderloin and potatoes really stole the show. They were both cooked in Wolf convection steam ovens, which produced a roast that was the ideal temperature from tip to tip and sweet potatoes that were perfectly roasted. It’s easy to see why Greenville residents Vivian and David Gaz were won over by the steam oven when redoing their kitchen a few years ago. “I never wanted a steam oven, but we came here for ideas and just had to have one. They really are amazing!” says David. His wife Vivian agrees, saying, “It works so well! It makes leftovers taste as good as the first night.” Kristin Chambers’ mother was definitely won over, coming over to tell us during the meal that she’d be getting one for her kitchen, and many of the fellow attendees wanted to follow suit! If you haven’t visited the Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove Showroom, The night ended on a sweet note as Chef Robert and the rest you may not know that it is unique in its approach: it’s a of the showroom staff sent us on our way with his soup recipe showroom that doesn’t sell. precious pets Buttercup Chase Last month, you met my sister Bretta; now, it’s my turn! Pet CPR and First Aid Hi, I’m Buttercup, a Shih Tzu mix. Like Bretta, I live with Reg certified and Jackie Fludd, but unlike Bretta, they didn’t adopt me as a puppy. In fact, I’m 7 years old, and I just moved in with them a Mobile App couple of months ago! Reg and Jackie had been searching for a companion for Bretta since last August but hadn’t found one. One Post-visit day, Reg found me at the Delaware Humane Association. I was update scheduled to be sent to another shelter in Rehoboth the next day, but he came down to meet me right before closing and gave them INSURED AND BONDED BY: Offering the best in a deposit to keep me in Wilmington so Jackie could meet me the next day. I loved her as much as I loved Reg, and I was so excited Pet Sitting • Dog Walking to make this my new forever home! 302.304.8399 Bretta wasn’t quite as excited, though. I think she was used to being top dog, and well, I am older, after all! I didn’t fight her for WEATHERORNOTDE.COM it, though – she was here first, so she still gets to rule the roost. At first, she wouldn’t play with me; she would walk by and bump me... and it took her about two weeks to warm up to me, but now we play together sometimes, and she even lets me play with her toys. As I’ve gotten more comfortable here, I’m letting more of my personality show. Reg didn’t even think I could bark when I first came here! I proved him wrong when he tried to have us sleep in the laundry room at night, and now we sleep with him and Jackie. (That might have helped Bretta accept me, too, come to think of it.) I think that surprised Reg and Jackie because Jackie thinks I’m the most chill dog...probably because one of my favorite things to do is to sit in her lap and cuddle! I also love to walk; I’d walk all day long if they’d let me! Do you have a pet and would you like to share his/her story? Then email jen@insidegreenville.com to have them featured in the next available issue! Dogs, cats, horses, fish, and any other type of animals are welcome! 32 Inside Greenville • April 2022
