EDINBURGH RIDING OF THE MARCHES SUNDAY 11th SEPTEMBER 2022 The Edinburgh Riding of the Marches, to be held on Sunday 11th September 2022 culminates in a spectacu- lar cavalcade of 280 horses making its way up the his- toric Royal Mile towards the Mercat Cross. Accompa- nied by pipe bands and led by the Lord Provost of Edin- burgh, City Officer, The High Constables, The Deacon Convenor of the Incorporated Trades of Edinburgh, Trades Officer, The Old Master and Lord Dean of Guild of the Merchants Company of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Exiles Association, all carrying their associated banners and flags and watched by crowds in excess of 20,000 people lin- ing the cobbled streets. The symbolic tradition of inspecting the common land dates back centuries, to at least 1494, making it one of the oldest rides in Scotland. The first record of a Riding of the Marches in Edin- burgh was on All Hallows (Halloween), 31st October 1579. On this date, a group of towns’ people gath- ered at the Provost’s house at 11 o’clock, from where they embarked on an inspection of the Marches of the Common Land led by the Captain of the Trained Band (Town Guard), the Lord Provost, Baillies and Burgesses. The inspection of the Com- mon Land continued, until the demise of the practice in 1718. In 1946 a special ‘Riding of the Marches’ was held in Edinburgh to celebrate peace and the end of the war. Seventy riders took part and a large crowd, reported to be ‘approaching Royal visit dimensions’ greeted the riders in the Royal Mile. The modern day re-enactment, revived in 2009, commemorates Ran- dolph Murray’s return to Edinburgh with the ancient Blue Blanket and the tragic news of the defeat of the Scottish Army at the Battle of Flodden 1513 and is in honour of those who sought to protect the in- tegrity of Edinburgh’s Common Land and defend the inhabitants of the city. Find out more including about how to register to ride in the event: www.edinburghridingofthemarches.com
