JAN FRAYSER ’The heart of the school’ After 32 years as the director of guidance at Pius X High School, Jan Frayser is often referred to as “the heart” of the school. Frayser earned a bachelor’s degree from Chadron State College with endorsements in theatre, music and speech. She then received a master’s degree in Secondary School Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado, which led to her hiring as the director of guidance in 1987. Jan has been the driving force behind many significant programs and improvements over the years, including the establishment of the Acquiring and Building Learning Excellence (ABLE) program for learners who benefit from extra assistance, the Ambassadors program which aims to recruit and empower student advocates for peers who are most vulnerable, and the TLC program, which provides targeted assistance to failing students. Jan has served on crisis response teams for schools in the Lincoln Diocese, and is part of the city-wide suicide prevention coalition. “Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12:28 4 U piusx.net

TIM AYLWARD Teacher, Coach, AD, Mentor Tim Aylward graduated from Pius X in 1969 before attending Kearney State, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical edu- cation. After brief stints as a teacher and coach at Kearney High School and Cozad High School, Aylward was hired as a physical education teacher and head football coach to replace Pius X’s legendary Vince Aldrich in 1985. As a head coach, Aylward led the Thunderbolts football program to more than 200 wins and four state championships. He has been the recipient of numerous coaching honors, including coach of the year. Aylward was in- ducted into the Pius X Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. Currently in his tenth year as the school’s athletic director, he has overseen major facility improve- ments such as installing turf at Aldrich Field, purchasing state-of-the-art scoreboards in Bishop Flavin Gym, and adding a softball practice field on campus. Aylward was also instrumental in the school joining the Heartland Athletic Conference. “So I exhort the elders ... shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock ... Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humil- ity toward one another, for ’God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” 1 Peter 5:1-5 6 U piusx.net

Honoring Coach through new Tim Aylward Fund An endowed fund honoring Tim Aylward has been established by an anonymous donor to honor his committment to Catholic education and his impact on many student-athletes at Pius X High School. Examples of what the funds for the Athletic Department may be used for include weight room equipment, hurdles, practice equipment, supplies for the athletic trainer, etc. Locker Room and Athletics Facilities To learn more about how endowed funds Estimated cost - $4.1 million work, see Page 5 in Donors can also honor Tim The existing boys and girls this issue. From the openness of hearts to the opening of a new classroom addition Lincoln Pius X High School opened the doors to a new classroom addi- tion this fall, complete with a dedica- tion and blessing by Bishop Conley. The Msgr. James D. Dawson Learning Center, which includes the new Msgr. Ivan F. Vap Industrial Arts Center, is home to 15 new classrooms, updat- ing the Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), Industrial Arts, Fine Arts, Social Studies, and Family & Consumer Science areas with contem- porary learning spaces which will help inspire students for the next genera- tion. All this was made possible thanks to $5.8 million in donations from gen- erous supporters and was independent of a full capital campaign. “Pius X is truly blessed to have such wonderful support,” Fr. Meysenburg said. “The additional classrooms al- low for continued growth and the assurance that no student desiring to receive a Catholic education will be denied enrollment.” 8 U piusx.net

Michael Keenan ’61 Record-breaking GTPD: new Vocal Music fund & Alumni trophy ABOUT ’GIVE TO PIUS X DAY’ 2019 This was our third Give to Pius X Day, and it was a record-breaking year! THANK YOU! We met every matching gift challenge – earning $70,000 in matching funds – and raised a total of $380,000+ from nearly 800 donors. In years past, alumni and supporters may remember the annual phone-a-thon that paved the way for this digital transformation. This year, a $10,000 gift to establish the new Pius X Vocal Music Endowment was an especially exciting suprise! (See the video when we told Todd Krier and Sotto Voce choir the news: piusx.net/main-gtpd.) FUND FOR PIUS X Your generous support during Give to Pius X Day brought us more than half-way to our goal of raising $675,000 for the Fund for Pius X by June 30, 2020! The Fund for Pius X supports part of the school’s annual budget, yearly expenses, and helps keep tuition low. During the 2019-20 school year, tuition and fees average $2,449. Your investment in the Fund for Pius X will continue making it possible for families to pay a fraction of the $6,200 actual cost per student while maintaining competitive salaries and benefits for our dedicated faculty and staff. 26 U piusx.net A- NLUEMWNINI C2O01M9*PETITION The graduating classes of Pius X High School competed for a new trophy. The winner - The Class of 1963! The trophy will be ready soon. There was a three-way tie for second place between the classes of 1961, 1969 and 1997.

JOHN THE APOSTLE LOYALTY SOCIETY The St. John the Apostle Loyalty Society was established in special recognition of our loyal supporters who have given 10 or more consecutive years of support for Pius X High School or Foundation. “Our divine Redeemer had a particular affection for him above the rest of the apostles; insomuch that when St. John speaks of himself, he saith that he was ’The disciple whom Jesus loved’....Our saint seems to have accompanied Christ through all his sufferings; at least he attended him during his crucifixion, standing under his cross... Here it was that our Lord declared the assurance he had of this disciple’s affection and fidelity, by recommending with his dying words, his holy mother to his care....What more honourable testimony could Christ have given him of his confidence, regard, and affection? To him alone was given this special privilege of being treated by her as if she had been his natural mother, and of reciprocally treating her as such by respectfully honouring, serving, and assisting her in person. This was the recompense of his constancy and fervour in his divine Master’s service and love.” From The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints, Vol. IV, Rev. Alban Butler 28 U piusx.net

Honoring A Family Legacy About The Dominick & Rosemary Elsener Memorial Fund Dominick Elsener was born on February 17, 1928 in Omaha, Nebraska. He served as a merchant marine at the age of 16 during WWII and went on to work as a book binding operator for 45 years before his retirement. Rosemary “Rosie” Elsener was born on July 12, 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was proud of her Irish- Catholic heritage and her Nebraska roots. Dominick and Rosemary Elsener were married on June 17, 1950. They were married for 63 years and raised six children that produced the fruitful legacy of 29 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren. Mr. Elsener & Mrs. Elsener passed away on November 3 exactly five years apart (2013 & 2018), respectively. Mr. & Mrs. Elsener were most grateful and supportive of St. Teresa and the impact of Pius X High School on their family. This endowment was established by the Elsener family to help advance the mission of Pius X and Catholic education in Lincoln. A Plan of Giving and Gratitude Verlyn and Sheila Westra had eight children and fully devoted the entire family to religious education and academic excellence. They also played a role in founding St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where Verlyn served as usher, prayed weekly at his Perpetual Adoration hour, and helped when- ever called upon. Westra included a gift of more than $227,000 to Pius X in his estate plan. He passed away in 2019. Son Eric wrote, “Our father chose to include Pius X and other Catholic schools in his estate plan because he knew the long-term value of a Cath- olic education. He grew up poor – the son of a widowed school teacher – and throughout his life made careful use of the gifts and resources God had given him. Dad was legendary for stretching every dollar as far as humanly possible, and when he did have to spend money he wanted it to be for things that would last. When it came to education, Mom and Dad knew that the cost of Catholic education was a wise investment that would pay great future dividends – in this world and into eternity. That’s why they sacrificed to send seven children through Catholic grade schools and Pius X High School, and that’s why they chose to include Pius X and other Catholic schools in their estate planning. Our family is profoundly grateful for the sacrifices that Mom and Dad made to provide for our futures, and we are so very proud that they also chose to share their bless- ings with other families by their estate gift to Pius X High School.” Brian & Courtney Johnson Dr. Beth (Hussey) ’95 & Kelley Green & Gold Club Pat & Sarah (Miller) Hodge ’97 Gary & Marilyn Kleinschmit Rawlings Ryan & Jessica (Becker) ’02 Mary Huggenberger Tom & Jill (Noel) ’83 Korta10+ Hollis & Joan (Giunta) ’48 Michael & Emily (Harrison) Rob & Jenny Reif Allington Matt ’94 & Kiley Reiling15+ Rod & Michele Arndt10+ Jennings10+ Kottwitz ’06 Bernie & Betty (DeMars) Rempe Russell & Carleen Barger William & Mary (Wall) ’66 Derrick & Ashley (Coppersmith) Paul & Michelle Birkel10+ ’6315+ Ken & Lisa Boatman10+ Jeppson15+ ’06 Krienert Kenneth & Peggy Rezac Clint & Theresa Boothe10+ Jeremie & Jaime Kerkman Ryan & Amy Krings Paul & Sarah Rohrs Rob ’89 & Lori (Dustin) ’90 Dave & Ann Kirby10+ Joe & Charity Kuehn Dr. John & Jillian (Jakub) ’97 John ’59 & Karen Knopp10+ Phillip & Joan Liescheski15+ Bryant10+ Kevin & Margaret Kramer Jerome & Karen Linderman Rutledge Dr. Matthew & Amberly (Divis) Michael Kreikemeier10+ Scott ’89 & Angie Lonergan Susan Sand James & Julie Kuntz Mark & Julie (Childerston) ’90 Michael & Lynn Schafer Byington ’9610+ Dr. Rex & Karen (LeGrande) ’81 Michael ’82 & Lisa (Laux) ’83 Marcia Camden Lutjeharms20+ John & Mary Clark Largen20+ Dr. John ’89 & Kendra (Karnopp) Schafers15+ Dr. Dennis & Sue Connolly10+ David & Cheryl (McQuillen) ’63 Josh & Chelsea Schauer Reverend Brian Connor ’90 Majerus10+ Kevin & Heidi Schieuer10+ Cherie (Brown) Cowan ’60 Mart Gary & Linda Major Mark & Cindy Schilmoeller15+ Douglas & Verna Curry Ben Mattern ’08 Beth McCabe Jim Sizemore10+ Dr. Tim & Carolyn Dalton Aaron ’94 & Becky (Dawson) ’95 Pat & Dr. Courtney Dave & Valerie Snitily10+ Jill Danford Rose Marie Stava Jenny (Dawson) Dawson Meyer May10+ McCashland10+ Jason & Sherri Suelter Roger & Denise Meeks Pat (Newman) McGovern ’4410+ Don & Therese Swanson ’8020+ Molly Milana ’07 Scott & Denise McLain Patrick & Amber Timmer Jim & Marjorie Determan15+ Gayle Morin Daniel & Angela Meyer10+ Monsignor Ivan Vap William V & Mary Dougherty Jason ’07 & Kayla Muhleisen Jerry & Kristi Meyer Steve & Debbie Vasa Ed ’89 & Tiffany (Winters) ’91 Mark & Jody Navratil Reverend James Meysenburg10+ DJ & Jill Vodicka Michael ’89 & Aimee (Sand) ’90 Steve & Amy Mitchell James & Mary Jean Vogel10+ Easley Andrew & Anne (Kucera) ’00 Chad & Amy Vyhlidal Melissa Fisher Nebel10+ Louis Wenzl Casey & Mindi Fritton John & Kelly Pokojski Munger Bert & Sue Wilkinson10+ Jim & Kendra Goodwin Brittany Pollock ’14 Hieu Ninh & Nga Vu Mike & Amy (Gray) ’89 Zeleny20+ Chuck & Louise (Gude) ’70 Paul & Susan Portsche Tony ’89 & Cyndi Ojeda Steve ’83 & Julie (Wakefield) ’84 Herb & Katie Reese10+ Jeff & Sarah Peetz Greenway Rich & Mary Beth Rice10+ Brian & Jenny (Kroupa) ’94 Zeplin10+ Matt ’89 & Stacy Gutschenritter20+ Bernardine Ruskamp Richard & Catherine Haden10+ Ken & Jennifer Sander Pfeifer John & Cindy Hanzel Eric ’06 & Terri (Morin) ’05 40 U piusx.net

Outside Our Own Doors New Friends in Faith fund seeks community through public events Generous donors created the new Friends in Faith en- dowed fund in 2018 to allow Pius X High School to give back to the community through Christian events open to the public. The inaugural evangelical event occurred in the spring of 2019, the Pius X Foundation office hosted a red carpet premiere of the movie Unplanned. The event was sold out of the 1,000 tickets offered, and proceeds were used to give back to Lincoln Right to Life, Lincoln Pregnancy Center, and Pius X Pro Life Club. Fund Mission Statement: Members of ’Friends in Faith’ are a Christ-Loving Community, challenged to Fos- ter family life, by offering a venue of Family Fun and Fel- lowship so to strengthen the presence of God within the family. The donors wanted a) Pius X students, staff, parents and the community to have opportunities to attend evangeli- cal events within the community of Lincoln, Nebraska, to foster family life and one’s personal relationship with our God, and b) Pius X students to give back to the community by engaging with fellow Christian brothers and sisters.
