An additional fairway bunker was added on the leftwith the other two fairway bunkers remodelled. The stock pileof sand on the left of the fairway was trucked over to thepractice fairway where we would make good use of it later inthe year.Fairways were also widened on holes 16, 17, and 18 in Januaryto provide fairer playing avenues without fussy contour lines. In March a new fairway bunker was added to the left of hole 13and the greenside bunkers were slightly modified to provideconsistency of style. Some landscape enhancement work wasalso completed through hole 13 to open up the playingcorridor. In May we transitioned the Veldt Grass out of the 15th carryand replaced it with fine Fescue and native grasses that arenow beginning to establish. We also began the upgrade of thepractice fairway with the sand that was carted from the left ofthe 5th fairway. In June we began the re-surfacing of the 12th green, thisinvolved removing the sod and thatch then replacing with freshsand before the original contours were reinstated. In August we installed two new bore water holding tanksincreasing our water storage from 75,000lt to about500,000lt.In early October we hosted the Senior Australian AmateurChampionship. Held over four days, the course presented verywell and all who participated were very impressed with the newworks and quality of the turf.November was occupied with works on the 10th holestandardising bunker design and improving the aesthetics ofthe carry. The month of December is always reserved for renovationworks on the course to ensure we can provide first classsurfaces all year round. Fairways have been scarified andgreens cored and top dressed once again. All of the work listed above has been finished to a very highstandard with minimal impact to golf while maintaining firstclass facilities at all times. The course staff look forward to the challenges ahead in 2017and would like to acknowledge the support of the membersand Committee for their continued support during a very busy2016.

From the ArchivesKooyonga has engaged a number of fine Professionals in its history, none someritorious as the first, namely Rufus Stewart. He was thirty years of age when, in 1923,he began work at Kooyonga. As a young boy he lived with his parents within a five iron from the first green at thenewly-laid course at Seaton. With his brother Hector, and another young lad by thename of Arthur West, he became infected with the game, and took every opportunity tohit a ball “around the paddock” at Seaton to think out ways of improving his game withhis homemade clubs. His equipment was the old gutty ball and clubs with the tamariskshafts, with heads of bent pieces of pipe. The Mr West here mentioned, of course in later years, became the most famedgreenkeeper at Kooyonga. The fountain at the tenth tee is memorial to him (an articleon Mr West will appear in a later edition). The first job Rufus had was caddie-master at Seaton, and H.L “Cargie” Rymill gave himhis first two real golf clubs, a brassie and an iron, and some balls in 1907. He played inhis first Australian Open Championship in 1910, which was played at Seaton, and didwell enough for the Adelaide Golf Club (now Royal Adelaide Golf Club) to send him, withSeaton’s then Professional Jim Scott, to Melbourne to play in the Open at the RoyalMelbourne Golf Club. He also became a member of the newly formed ProfessionalGolfers’ Association that same year. The war years intervened, and in 1923, following the opening of Kooyonga, Rufusstarted in a part-time capacity. He came into residence at Kooyonga, and as the gameof golf was enjoying quite a rapid growth in popularity, gave him many teaching opportunities, and he also assisted in laying out courses atMount Gambier, Port Pirie and others. But playing in the Australian Open was his main thrust. He was seventh in 1924, fifth in 1925, runner-up in 1926 to winning the AustralianOpen Championship in 1927 at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, carding 74, 75, 73, 75 for a total of 297, with seven clubs in his bag. He wasalso the runner-up for the next three years to Fred Popplewell in 1928, just after he returned from representing Australia at the British andAmerican Championships. Also in 1929, he won the Australian Professional Championship, and in 1931, after winning the SpaldingOverseas Trophy, travelled again to play in the British Open - quite a remarkable record. It was stated in the press that any competitor inthese fields who may fancy their chance, it is probable that they would consider Rufus Stewart to be the most serious rival. His charmingdisposition made him a “modest winner and a generous loser”.He was known as a long hitter, his driver being one-and-a-half inches longer than standard. He was persuaded by some American players Life Membership Awarded to AnnSaunders At the Annual General Meeting held on Thursday 9 June 2016, Ann Saunders was granted Life Membership. Nominated by Sally Sarah, Ann had qualified in every way, having been a selfless contributor to State, Club and junior golf. Ann has mentored many, been financially generous, held positions of responsibility and played solid golf for teams and individually. She is a popular member of the Club, has been a sought after foursomes partner and has participated at an elite level. Most importantly, Ann has given more than she has taken from golf. Through her leadership and support of junior girl’s golf, she is known and respected by players, parents and clubs throughout South Australia. Ann continues to champion good sportsmanship, protocols and enjoyment in golf. Christmas Newsletter 2016 pg 14

during visits there, to adopt an “open square stance”, which gave him tremendous carry. He regularly drove the third hole at Seaton(remember this is in the 1920’s) and when Kooyonga’s old fifteenth hole was 220 yards, regularly using his 4 iron. Another of Rufus’highlights was a drive he made at the North Adelaide course of 381 yds. 2ft which was measured with a steel tape. There was noappreciable following wind, but the ground was hard, it was recorded. Other press items state that the “length of his cleek shots excitedthe envy and imagination of many a fine golfer” and “his short mashie-niblick pitch shot was invariably played with great accuracy”. Hisputting was not his strength, as is quoted “his putting stance does not seem as comfortable as it might be, nor does his method of strikingthe ball inspire confidence”.He attracted the name “Night Fighter”, this being due to him playing a round at Kooyonga in 1930 at night, totally in the dark. A flashlightwas held by a friend, enabling him to hit the ball. The round took him exactly one-and-a-quarter hours to complete, and he shot 77. Theball was mounted and presented to him.A further presentation of a clock was made to him by Kooyonga members, the inscription telling the story of his whirlwind round onOctober 12, 1934, carding an amazing 63, an unofficial record at the time, and which stood for a very, very long period. In giving advice to golfers generally, his argument, and what he taught, was that right hand is the dominant hand. In proof of this, he wouldregularly stand on a tee and drive a ball 200 plus yards one-handed. His theory was that if a player has his swing right at the point ofimpact, the player will naturally adopt a stance and style that would suit his particular build. One of the most often used phrases to pupilswas “you must keep your shoulders to the hole”. Much of what he said 90 odd years ago is still worth thinking about today. In 1953, he stated that hickory shafts gave more “touch” than the newer steel shafts. In his early years, not having anything like a full setof clubs, he “worked” on the ball with what he had, perfecting hook, slice, playing high and playing low.In later years, he contracted arthritis, which made it impossible to hold a club in his hands. He put something back into golf, serving asSecretary of the SA Professional Golf Association. He served Kooyonga as its Professional from 1923 to 1946; some of his assistantsincluded Fred Thompson, Jim Mills, Bruce Auld, the late A. Bullock andothers. On retirement from golfing duties, he devoted his time to a garagebusiness he developed in Findon.Rufus Stewart must surely stand as one of the outstanding figures everto have been connected with the game of golf here in South Australia. Itdoes Kooyonga proud to recognise the contribution he made to our Club, state and national golf, and also on the international stage.Written by Bill Johnson & Grant Laidlaw, Club ArchivistsCarrol Reynolds - An Impressive SportsmanThe C Grade Trophy played over the June long weekend saw the greatest age gap between competitors inClub history with 14 year old Jack Speirs taking on the Club veteran, Carrol Reynolds who celebrated his90th birthday in October this year.
