A note from Todd Thelen 1 Back in the 70's, I sat in the stands at Slinger Speedway, dreaming of one day racing in a Super Late Model. That was just a dream back then. After graduating from high school, I traveled the Midwest with high school friend, Jeff Wilke, crewing on his Sprint Car team. (Jeff raced Slinger in a Hobby Stock while in high school.) Work and racing consumed my life for a few years until my girlfriend (now wife), Elizabeth, convinced me to try college (at least that's how I remember it...LOL). So, college it was in 1987 and that was also the first year I raced. I bought a go-kart and raced at Badger Raceway from 1987 through 1991. I did some WKA national races, but pretty much concentrated on my home track in Dousman. Success was abundant, winning three championships and setting the track record in qualifying (long ago broken). The summer of 1991 brought another stepping stone. We were racing the go-kart, plus I was crewing a Sprint Car and Midget deal for Paul Stend- er. We raced weekly at Knoxville with the Sprint Car and hit USAC and Badger races when we could. Then one day Paul said, “Get the midget ready; you can drive it this week at Sun Prairie”. On Friday night we loaded up the Sprint Car for Knoxville (for Saturday night), the go-kart for Dousman (for Sunday), and the Midget for Sun Prairie (Sunday Night). (Yeah, don't whine to me about racing once a week; we did three in two days.) I ran Paul's Midget three nights at the end of that summer, and that propelled me to start my own midget team. I ran from 1992 to 1996 with Badger and USAC, encountering lots of highs and lows, racing against some of the best in the business, through what arguably were the glory days of Midget racing. Forty-five to 60 cars each night was not out of the norm. Competition was tough, and there was a tall learning curve, but by the 1995 prelim, wins were racking up and fast quali- fiers too. A blown tire with five to go cost me a feature win that season. My dirt career ended in 1996 with a top five at the Pepsi Nationals (one of the toughest races in the country). Then I went on the road and ran the Hut 100, live-TV Thursday night Thunder race on ESPN. Over 70 cars were there that night, and I made the show, finishing 11th. In 1995, Elizabeth and I married. Dave Olson and I became close friends that year too, which led to the next racing chapter. Dave dreams big and he said, “How about we go asphalt racing at Slinger”. I was thinking “cool, always dreamed of that”. So, Dave hooked up a meeting with Conrad Morgan and we put together a SLM deal, leasing a car from him. The year was 1997, and I knew nothing about asphalt racing, but I was living the dream and figuring it out as we went. About the fourth or fifth night out, I qualified third (now this is “back in the day” when 40 SLMs were the norm at Slinger). Not sure how I did that, but we made it through tech (because of course I was cheating - new kid can't be that fast never drove a stock car or as- phalt). Well, at the first round of the Slinger Nationals something broke, I hit the wall and destroyed that car. We rebuilt a new one, but it took a lot to figure it out and I struggled for quite a while. The year 2000 was by far my best; I won a bunch of trophy dashes and led 54 of 60 laps cruising to a win, lapping cars until a yellow came out (Brad Mueller schooled me on a restart). I ran about 18 races in 2000 and never tore a fender off the car (wish guys raced that clean these days). Then 2001 brought the tech stock market crash in the winter and terrorism in September, forever changing the USA. Money was tight, marketing dollars became scarce and folks were nervous. I felt the pinch, but continued on. Oh, and Luke was born in 2001 also. In 2002, we hung a new body and updated the chassis. We were ready to roll, but had bad luck. I was not able to compete at a high level, and decided to take a break, but didn't leave racing. I helped out crewing for Conrad Morgan for two years, and crewed a few times on Brian Vickers’ NASCAR Busch (now Xfinity) team until I found out about a potential job opening at a local racetrack. It was the winter of ‘04 (Blake was born), the ‘05 season and an opportunity for a career in the racing industry were looking me in the face. I was a suit-and-tie guy since graduating college in 1991, so this was going to be a big change. The money was- n't as good, but the opportunity was. I met with Wayne Erickson, and worked a deal out. I will always remember Wayne ask- ing me about my future, and my answer was “some day standing here, running the track”. Combining my skills with Wayne's mentoring was a good fit. Things were going great until the financial crises in 2010; things got tough for everyone back then and race tracks were not immune. In fact, I don't believe a lot of racetracks ever recovered. I went to Wayne, said I knew things were tight, offered to take a pay cut to help keep things going, and we went on. In the fall of 2012, Wayne approached me and basically said it was time for him to move on. We worked out a deal to lease the track, and in 2013 Rodney and I were the new promoters of Slinger Speedway. In the fall of 2018, Rodney decided it was time for him to move on and an amicable buyout was arranged. For the 2019 season I took over as the sole promoter of Slinger Speedway, still leasing the property from Wayne with the goal of purchasing it in the near future. I have to thank my wife Elizabeth, sons Blake and Luke, all my family, friends, race teams, sponsors, staff, and faith - without all of them this would not be possible. ~Todd Thelen Luke, Todd, Elizabeth, Blake & Brooke Special THANKS to... Miss Slinger 2018-19, Kristy Held and 2019-20 Mikena Wantz 39 Being Miss Slinger is so much more than a satin sash and a smile. It’s sharing the ex- citement of a rookie’s first win, or a veteran’s 20th trophy. The pride beaming from the crew and family as they run down from the pits to share the moment. Helping the kids out of their car...or catching it as it rolls away. It’s welcoming newcomers to the track and chatting with the season pass holders. Being a part of Slinger Speedway each week is my Sunday Funday. ~Kristy Held I wanted to become Miss Slinger Speedway for a couple reasons actually. I’ve been an outdoors girl all my life with motorsports right alongside it when it came to my interests. I have been going to the track since I was the age of one. My grandpa, Norman “Sags” Saegert, used to be the flag waver so some of my very first colors learned were through the flags he asked me to hand him. So a part of my decision was to carry out my grandpa’s legacy there. Also, with me going there every Sunday out of my own interests, I thought it’d be nice to finally get to know the drivers I’ve been following on a more per- sonal level and get a new experience on the track other than the stands. ~Mikena Wantz

The Sunday Night Tradition 40 It all began in the mid 1930's, when Washington County Sheriff Deputy, Bill Johnson Sr., became interested in the speed of racing. He bought his first midget car in 1938; and the next year, when his son, Bill Jr. began to race, they graded an impromptu track in their backyard, on the south end of Slinger. In 1948, the Senior Johnson approached Rollie Heder about building a real track in Slinger; and one hour later, they stood on a hill overlooking a natural amphitheater located on the village's north side. Immediately, the word was out: Slinger would have a race track. Much work would need to be done; and it seemed everyone was willing to help, putting up lights, building bleachers and grading the original 1/5 mile dirt track. Six weeks later, Johnson and Heder's dream was reality; and on July 10th, 1948, an estimated crowd of 5,000 paid $1.00 each to watch 35 cars compete in a seven-event program. Midget cars raced during most of the Speedway's first two years, and \"stock cars\" first appeared on the scene in 1949. The first two years also had the shows scheduled on Saturday nights. \"The Sunday Night Tradition\" began on July 27th, 1950, and with the exception of one year, has been the norm. In 1952, the track was leased to Cyclone Speedways, and 1953 saw the Central Stock Sanctioning Body operate the track as a non-profit organization, which turned out to be so non- profitable that Heder regained sole ownership of the Speedway in 1954. 1958 and 1959 saw the cars change in appearance, from large sedans to open-wheeled modified. The legendary Miles \"The Mouse\" Melius dominated much of the action during the track's first 20 years, winning 7 track championships. Bill Johnson Jr., one of the original owner's sons, also won 5 titles in the first 20 years. After a trip to Daytona in the early 1970's, Heder decided to build his own \"Little Daytona\" in Slinger. The last dirt race was held in 1973, and in the summer of 1974, the track reopened as a high-banked 1/4 mile paved oval. Late model stock cars debuted on July 22nd, 1974. Joe Shear and Dick Trickle split the twin 99 lap feature events, and a new era in racing was born in Slinger. Wayne Erickson leased the track from Heder in 1975 and took over as owner in 1976. In 2013 the torch was handed off to promoters Todd Thelen and Rodney Erickson and in 2019, Thelen took over as the sole promoter. Events such as Slinger High School football games and rock concerts added to the lure of the race track as a place where exciting events would occur. Forty years ago, Slinger Speedway track owner Wayne Erickson and short track legend Dick Trickle got together and came up with the idea for a big money, mid-week super late model race that would pit the best from Slinger, the Central Wisconsin Racing Association, Midwest, and the entire US against one another. From that idea sprang the Slinger Nationals, which continues annually in July. Many big name drivers either got their start at, or have passed through, Slinger Speedway. Some of the more recognizable include Alan Kulwicki, Matt Kenseth, Robbie Reiser, Mark Martin, Richie Bickle, Bobby Allison, Davey Allison. Dale Earnhardt Sr., Kyle Petty, Harry Gant, Kenny Schrader, Ernie Irvan, Sterling Marlin, Ted Musgrave, Rusty Wallace, Michael Waltrip, Darryl Waltrip, Kenny Wallace, Neil Bonnett, and Kyle Busch. ~Excerpted from Slinger Historical Album: Schleisingerville to Slinger, 125 years, 1869-1994
