The only major sport strictly of U.S. origin, basketball was invented by James Naismith (1861–1939) on or about December 1, 1891, at the International Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) Training School (now Springfield College), Springfield, Massachusetts, where Naismith was an instructor in physical education. James Naismith was a Canadian-American physical educator, physician, Christian chaplain, sports coach, and inventor of the game of basketball. After moving to the United States, he wrote the original basketball rule book and founded the University of Kansas basketball program.
Court Dimension A basketball court is 91.86ft long and 49.21ft wide. The total playing area for a court is 4520.43 ft² and 7290.5ft² if run-offs and sidelines are required.
Equipment Basketball is physically demanding and fast moving. The explosive energy of racing up and down the court is taxing on leg muscles and ligaments. The contact nature of the sport ups the risk of falls and collisions with other players. Appropriate protective gear can help to minimize injury risks such as: Ball, Rim, Jersey, Shoes, Shorts, Socks
Basic Basketball Skills The following are the five most important basketball fundamentals, in no specific order: 1.Dribbling 2.Shooting 3.Defense 4.Rebounding 5.Passing
Technical and Tactical Skills The technical and tactical skills of basketball are the necessary elements an athlete must acquire in order to maintain beyond- the-arc shots, perfect ball handling, better rebounding, better blocking, accurate passing, better shooting, swift-running patterns, and quick thinking.
Technical skills- are the ways in which players in various sports move their bodies to attain specific goals. Successful athletes have a diverse set of technical talents that enable them to excel in their chosen sport. Every sport has its own set of technical talents, and some sports have distinct techniques with the same or similar names. Dribbling in basketball and dribbling in water polo, for example, are two separate motions. Tactical- Tactical skills are mental strategies that good athletes employ to win games and tournaments. Athletes and teams can improve their technique by mastering these skills. They may require problem-solving abilities and frequently rely on the athlete's understanding of their coach's objectives. Many of these abilities can be used in a variety of sports. In football, soccer, and hockey, for example, observation is a crucial tactical skill because knowing where your opponents are can be crucial to your team's success.
Basic Rules and Violations The rules of basketball are the rules and regulations that govern the play, officiating, equipment and procedures of basketball. While many of the basic rules are uniform throughout the world, variations do exist.
1) The player must bounce, or dribble, the ball with one hand while moving both feet. If, at any time, both hands touch the ball or the player stops dribbling, the player must only move one foot. The foot that is stationary is called the pivot foot. 2) The basketball player can only take one turn at dribbling. In other words, once a player has stopped dribbling they cannot start another dribble. A player who starts dribbling again is called for a double-dribbling violation and looses the basketball to the other team. A player can only start another dribble after another player from either team touches or gains control of the basketball. This is usually after a shot or pass. 3) The ball must stay in bounds. If the offensive team looses the ball out of bounds the other team gets control of the basketball. 4) The players hand must be on top of the ball while dribbling. If they touch the bottom of the basketball while dribbling and continue to dribble this is called carrying the ball and the player will lose the ball to the other team. 5) Once the offensive team crosses half court, they may not go back into the backcourt. This is called a backcourt violation. If the defensive team knocks the ball into the backcourt, then the offensive team can recover the ball legally.
