5Lesson Performing Post-Service Activities Just like in our everyday life we have basic needs like food, water, and shelter; but cleanliness also holds importance. In fact, it is as essential as the basic needs to be healthy and live without diseases. When you clean yourself and keep the environment clean, there is a less chance for you to get ill which will enable you to enjoy a healthy life, lead an active lifestyle, and enhance your lifespan. What’s In The following are tools and materials used in our previous lesson, Write the name of the tools and materials shown below on a separate sheet of paper. 1. _________________________ 2. _________________________ 3. _________________________ 4. _________________________ 5. _________________________ 5

What’s New The following are tools and materials used in our previous lesson. Identify and indicate how they are cleaned and where you store them. MATERIALS CLEANING STORAGE 6

What is It During the previous lessons, you have been taught on how to use the tools and equipment in hairdressing. And in all the lessons, you have been reminded to take care of these tools because like a warrior that has weapons, you can’t go to war with a rusted sword. As a professional stylist, you have to have the skills, but the skills you have will not be effective with damaged tool. So, to learn on how to take care of your tools and how to store them properly, you will have to learn the meaning of the 5 S. What Is 5S? This is a systematic series of steps introduced by the Japanese to clean, sanitize, and store tools and equipment that they use. Why do we have to use this? Imagine storing your blow drier just somewhere and having to run around to find it when you must use it in the middle of styling a client. Knowing where your materials and tools are will save you the time, efficiency as well as the profit. What Does 5S Stand For? The Japanese have devised the five S's to mean Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke. The five S's are interpreted in English as Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. SEIRI or SORT Garbage Segregation This is the method of deciding and separating the materials and tools, keeping only the crucial items needed to complete tasks. During this process, you will have to go through all the tools and materials you have on a workspace to decide which will be kept and which is unnecessary as keeping them will only clutter your workspace and make it look like a dump. 7

If you can’t decide on whether to let the tools and materials should stay or not, you can use the red-tagging method. In this method you will place a tag on a tool or material and mark that item when you have used it to keeps tabs if that tool is useful or not in your daily tasks, this type of method should only be used for a 30-day time and if that item is not used often, it should not stay. And once the sorting stage is complete, you will have a workspace devoid of all the unnecessary tools and materials with extra space that used to be cluttered. SEITON or SET IN ORDER In this process, you will have to organize each item to have a designated place. Create the place of all the items in a logical way, so they make tasks easier for workers to complete. Tools that you used often should be placed close to the spot they are used. Some equipment, supplies, and different devices that are used less frequently can be kept in a focal area, where some of the tools and equipment can share. Things that are ordinarily used together should be put close to one another. During this stage, everybody should think of useful plans that will make every task easy and productive. SHADOW BOARDS can be a useful device while executing and continuing the procedures of 5S. These include a blueprint of where devices have a place and enable workers to rapidly distinguish which devices are missing. Shadow sheets help with both instrument association and device responsibility. 8

LABELING can also be an effective organization as this can keep working areas organized, effective, and visual to you and your coworkers. You can put label on shelves, storage boxes, workspaces, pipes, etc. so that you can easily understand where things belong and can easily identify when something is missing. SEISO or SHINE Active effort is important to keep workplace clean and orderly to guarantee purpose- driven work. This will make your coworkers do cleaning and maintaining. You can do tasks such as mopping, dusting, etc. or performing maintenance. Create a schedule. Shine is not about cleaning up messes as they arise; instead, it's more about implementing the correct cleanliness strategies to avoid making messes within the first place. Rotating tasks will ensure that \"Shine\" is up to par and done in functional ways. Rotating job helps to keep everyone happy and involved, and it also may save managers and supervisors time as they're going to not have to constantly do the task themselves. SEIKETSU or STANDARDIZE Creating standards for both tools, equipment and processes is making rules for the first three S’s on how and when these tasks will be performed. These standards can involve schedules, charts, lists, etc. 9

Using Audit sheets, you can check the work being done in your salon as this will provide you with a clear set of rules that all of you will have to follow so that you can have a high-quality work. A checklist will provide those demands that your clients want to have or experience inside your salon. SHITSUKE or SUSTAIN It is essential that you should have self- discipline in this step because you will have to apply regular checking to make sure that all standards are being followed. You can use a Weekly work-area progress evaluation as this will help you see the places that should have an improvement and the aspects that you can continue in everyday operations. Awarding is a good practice for a workplace as it will give your coworkers to strive for a good conduct, thus helping your business. 10
