Introduction Pocketfit LLP was created in 2010, when Dean Liggett and Daniella Lerner identified a gap in the industry for good quality exercise and fitness resources and training. They found that people of all ages had been finding themselves wanting to stay fit and healthy but they were unable to access easy to follow information that didn’t require smart phones, internet or computers. PocketFit reacted to this gap and created resources allowing people to have access to an exercise programme any time, any place, anywhere. The programmes designed for children, titled PocketFit Kids, Animal Fun Exercise Cards, have since evolved to include: a training matrix for teachers, as well as guides and programmes to support curricular and extra-curricular activity to primary schools. Dean is a Personal Trainer by trade and the creator of the Pocketfit Cards and Daniella is a Nursery School Teacher with a passion for health and fitness and feels strongly that children should be educated in a healthy lifestyle in order to tackle the growing obesity problems and to help promote a healthy attitude to life and learning. Through the experience gained by creating resources for the general public, PocketFit Training realised that there was a further need for high quality exercise and fitness professionals and at the same time that there were young people in need of a career opportunity that would put them on a successful career path and learning journey. The Partnership Creative Sport & Leisure and Pocketfit became acquainted in 2015. Both companies have the same goals and ethics wanting to help young people into a meaningful career. As a result of this partnership, Government funded traineeship and apprenticeship programmes have become accessible to people of all ages within gym environments and together CSL & PocketFit are working nationally to create bespoke training programmes to suit employers, employees and anyone with the drive and enthusiasm to enter the Health and Fitness industry.4

What is a Traineeship?Traineeships are a good combination of educational training and work experience, which focuson giving a young person the skills and experience that employers will be looking for. Often anemployer is reluctant to employ someone without experience. This programme offers a youngperson the opportunity to gain qualifications and some experience within the workplace.• Work preparation training, which ensures young people have the skills and confidence needed for an Apprenticeship or other job.• Maths and English support to improve literary and numeracy.• Meaningful work experience, providing insight and experience of the world of work.Traineeships can be tailored to the needs of the employer and those of the individual.By working closely with us you can design a programme based on your wishlist ofrequirements, to help train and equip a range of high quality future recruits. Are there any financial costs to offering Traineeships? All training costs are met by Government funding. Employers are not required to pay the youngperson taking part in the traineeship but may provide support with expenses such as transportand meals. What happens at the end of the Traineeship?Once the young person has finished their traineeship programme, in support of their newqualification and experience, they will receive either:• An interview for progression onto an Apprenticeship or job within the business, if there is an opportunity available.• An exit interview together with written feedback or potentially a reference to help secure an opportunity with another employer.Who are Traineeships suitable for?• Young people aged 16-24• Qualified below Level 3• Not currently in a job• Focused on gaining work experience and getting into work. 13

All apprenticeships are real jobs so all apprentices earn a salary. Employers must pay at least thenational minimum apprenticeship wage – though many employers pay significantly more.Apprentices must work for at least 30 hours per week and an apprenticeship usually takesbetween 12 and 18 months to complete, depending upon the level of apprenticeship and theindustry sector. Most of the training is delivered in the workplace, equipping learners with the skills needed todo the job well. The rest of the training is provided by a training organisation such as us or ourpartners, either at the workplace, off-site or via e-learning.The training is specifically tailored to ensure Apprentices develop the skills the employer wants, providing apprentices with a real advantage in the workplace. This means that apprenticesnot only have better long term salary prospects, but they also have excellent progressionopportunities, whether looking to study further or climb the ranks and progress within theworkplace. 17

Learner Journey The learner journey through from Application to Completion fits into three main stages, as mapped above across C, S and L. The part of the journey which takes place in the C all occurs prior to the learner embarking on a course. The S depicts the areas which the learner will touch upon during their programme and the C follows this, detailing completion and progression. Upon finishing the whole learner journey a learner could potentially begin the process again at a higher and more advanced level18

Skills Training Creative Sport & Leisure deliver Functional Skills and Employability Skills as part of their Apprenticeship and Traineeship programmes to equip learners with the relevant English, Math and IT skills to deal with day-to-day problem solving. Functional Skills Creative Sport & Leisure has a team of qualified staff based around the UK who deliver both Functional and Employability Skills. These skills form an integral part of Apprenticeship and Traineeship programmes and are specifically designed so that learners can fill any gaps in their learning. These skills will enable learners to engage confidently and competently with others and solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar situations. All learners are required to undertake an online initial assessment which will determine their abilities, and identify any particular learning styles. Once learners are on programme they will, depending on prior attainment, either work towards or study full City & Guilds certificates in Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications in English, Math and ICT. To fit in with busy working roles, we have introduced eFunctional Skills which can enable our learners to remotely access tailored resources and lesson plans so that they can study independently and work towards being exam ready. Learners also benefit from a choice of either onscreen or paper based exams to suit their needs. Employability Employability skills are essential for getting, keeping and being successful in a job. These skills also enable employees to engage with and get along with their colleagues, make decisions, solve problems and develop respect. Employability skills are at the foundation of career building blocks and are often mentioned in the media as lacking in school-leavers, graduates and those already in employment. In times of high unemployment, employers have more choice of applicants and will favour those with well-rounded employability skills, which is why we embed Employability skills training into our programmes to give learners support outside of their vocational subject.20

Learner ServicesThe CSL Learner Services team provide information and support to meet individual needs. We tailor support for learners with a disability, specific learning difficulty or medicalcondition(s), as well as providing 1:1 support for those who might need additional helpwiththeir study skills. We offer information, advice and guidance to ensure the learner journey is a happy andsuccessful one.Additionally we will support with advice on:• Individual Support Plans• Personal Support - Counselling• Safeguarding - Health and Wellbeing• Equality and Diversity• Careers - Progression advice 21

We are also able to upskill any existing staff with any industry related qualification.22

Industry CoursesCSL are developing a suite of stand alone industry courses that are legal requirements for our industries, including other business to business courses that support the sector directly. With First Aid qualificationsrequiring re-certificating every 3 years and Safeguarding every 2 years, CSL can design and deliver thesecourses. For those that plan on a career in the Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being Sector, these qualificationscan help gain the skills and knowledge you require from understanding how the body works, how themind responds to motivation, how to lead a healthy lifestyle, encouraging people to get active, beingable to respond to accidents & emergencies, treating injuries, to organising physical activity events. These short courses and workshops can be delivered to individuals or to groups to support prior andexisting learning as well as serving as options for people with no previous experience in the Active Lei-sure, Learning and Well-being Sector. Sport & Leisure ATA Apprenticeship Training Agencies (ATA) recruit, employ and arrange training for apprentices on behalf of employers. The distinctive feature of the ATA model is that it is the ATA who acts as the apprentice employer and who places them with a host employer. The host employer pays the ATA a fee for the apprentices’ ser- vices; this fee being based on the wage agreed with the host and the ATA management fee. The ATA model offers other benefits for the employer. These include: • Support with recruitment – finding the right apprentice to meet the employers’ needs • Responsibility for the wages, tax, National Insurance as well as administration and performance management. • Supervision of the apprentice during the Apprenticeship period • Links with an approved training provider and support to both the apprentice and host employer throughout the Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA) model is intended to promote and support the delivery of a high quality apprenticeship programme involving employers who wish to use the services of an ATA to source, arrange and host their apprenticeships. This could be for a number of reasons including them not being able to commit to employment for the period of the full framework, short term restrictions on employee numbers, or the uncertainty about the value of an apprenticeship. CSL are now taking the ATA from the Olympic Park across England.24
