OUR FOUNDING FATHERS Written by Bob Pfleger in 1989 Forty years ago, several men saw the need to help their community in a way that at the time did not exist. First Aid was utilized from surrounding towns, but that meant that the communities from where they came from were not fully protected at the times when they were in Holmdel, and the possibility of ambulance crews not knowing where a particular address or location was good simply because it was not their town. So these men got together, organized and created the Holmdel First Aid Squad, Inc. on November 5, 1966. They could not in their wildest dreams have imagined what the First Aid Squad has or does forty years later. They laid the foundation for one of the best squads around, earning in that time a reputation envied by many other squads that have been around much longer. We salute these fine people, and thank them for sacrificing for their community and neighbors. Without them, this squad would not be what it is today. Frank J. Auriemma Joseph A. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF, CHRISTOPHER TRISCHITTA It is an honor and a privilege to be serving as Chief as Holmdel First Aid Squad celebrates its 50th Anniversary! Our squad remains a 100% volunteer organization, just as it was when it was formed 50 years ago. This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of our current active members and life members, as well as the support of the township residents and township employees. I have been fortunate enough to serve as Chief since January of 2017, as Captain in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and as Lieutenant in 2013. During my tenure as a line officer, we have worked together to continue the tradition of advancement and productivity for the Holmdel First Aid Squad. It has truly been incredible to witness and be a part of such significant development of the organization. The squad, which currently has 64 active volunteer members responsible for the Township’s year-round emergency care, answered over a thousand calls for emergency service so far in 2019, and provided standby coverage to numerous events in Holmdel Township. We are on track to answer 1700 calls for service this year. Our life members, which consist of members that have been riding for a decade or more, represent over 25% of our active volunteer members. These individuals deserve an extra thank you for going above and beyond what is expected of them. Historically as a squad, we have always sought to improve the level of care provided to Township residents and guests. We look for ways to support our responding members as they assist others in their time of need. We accomplish both by researching state-of-the-art pieces of equipment and technology available to first responders. Over the past few years, we have upgraded our fleet to four VCI Horton Ford-F-Series 4x4 ambulances. We purchased a new Chevy Tahoe Chief’s Command Vehicle, significantly upgraded our first responder vehicle, and made strategic upgrades to the Rescue Extrication Unit to ensure it remains top-of-the-line. The addition of automatic Stryker stretchers, combined with the acquisition and installation of automatic loading systems in three of our ambulances, facilitates the process of getting our stretchers off of the ground and loaded securely into our ambulances. This significantly reduces the risk of injury to our members caused by lifting and maneuvering the heavy stretchers. Our squad continues to make strategic equipment purchases, such as automatic blood pressure cuffs in all of our ambulances, to further support monitoring patient vital signs during transport. We purchased and placed rescue combi-tools (Jaws of Life) inside all duty ambulances, and have installed Panasonic Tough-books in our vehicles that allow us to electronically chart all first aid calls. Holmdel Township is in the process of substantially improving radio communica- tions by upgrading to a completely new digital system. Holmdel First Aid Squad is obtaining new radio communications equipment that will dramatically increase interoperability with cross-functional organizations. This upgrade, decades in the making, will finally be implemented in early 2020. To continue with our penchant for growth and change, the First Aid Squad Explorer program has become the Holmdel First Aid Cadet program! This elite program is running strong with over 30 high school members ranging in age from 16-18 years old. These Cadets are active participants in various trainings and squad events, as well as on the scenes of emergencies to which the First Aid Squad responds. A vast majority of them will become EMTs and apply for adult membership. Our membership consists of over 33% of members who were once explorers/cadets, including myself. This program is in its 25th year of existence, and shows no signs of slowing down! They are always looking forward to finding other ways to get involved with the community; look for them this Halloween passing candy out from our ambulances as we visit different neighborhoods in town! The Holmdel First Aid Squad continues to strive for excellence in all areas, electing line officers and executive officers for 2019 that will promote quality care and the implementation of the best equipment available. These individuals are responsible for the day-to-day inner workings of the squad. I applaud these individuals for independently being the best at their roles during my tenure as Chief. As always, the members of the Holmdel First Aid Squad would like to thank Holmdel Township, Holmdel Police Department, Holmdel Fire Department, Holmdel OEM, and the residents of Holmdel for their continued support! Without you, we would not be here celebrating our 50th anniversary mile- stone. Your support allows us to better our organization and provide the best care for our Township residents. We are grateful for all you do, and are thrilled that you could be with us to acknowledge 50 years of Holmdel First Aid Squad’s dedication and volunteer service to the Township of Holmdel! Regards, Chief Christopher Trischitta

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, LAUREN REIDY As the Holmdel First Aid Squad celebrates its 50th year of continuous service, we can look back at the long journey it has had. The First Aid Squad was established November 5th, 1969 and began answering calls February 1st, 1970. While perusing our records, one can find the first official minutes of the Squad - September 25th, 1969. Within the first records, our longstanding partnership with Hazlet was firmly set, as Walter McKinley of the Hazlet First Aid Squad guided us in the early months. This partnership has continued to this day, as we treat Hazlet like our own. Our first Captain was John Schank, who joined us after 22 years on the Keyport First Aid Squad. Three months before our first official Holmdel call, Matawan, Hazlet, and Keyport allowed us to take calls with them to provide the guidance and experience needed for our charter members. We are appreciative of the support extended at the beginning of our tenure, and are grateful that we have been able to maintain positive mutual aid relationships with the towns in our surrounding area. Since that first HFAS meeting in September 1969, one objective has stayed firm: our commitment to excellence, which has been exemplified by our full training schedule each year. In the first meeting, getting members to complete the 16-hour advanced medical certification was a priority. Beyond the 16- hour course, respiratory therapy, heart monitoring, driver training, motor vehicle accident, and rescue training were all done in the first year of establishment. This training has not stopped. Today’s current standard for the EMT course is up to 240 hours. Certified EMTs today are also expected to maintain 48 hours of continuing education classes over a three-year span. Many of our current members strive to go above and beyond the “typical EMT”, including those that have taken it upon themselves to become paramedics, training in tactical EMS, and completing trainings in other states through FEMA programs. Many members also continue on to medical school, becoming doctors, nurses, and physician assistants. The Holmdel First Squad continues to train and educate its members and update its protocol using the most up-to-date research from our Squad doctor, as well as through joint trainings with our fire department, neighboring squads, JCP&L, and New Jersey Transit. Without the interdepartmental relationships amongst our First Aid Squad, Fire Department, and Police Department we would be lost. We are truly lucky to have our officers at every call, ensuring our safety and taking it upon themselves to be familiar with our equipment-- all to provide the best care to Holmdel. Our dispatchers know Holmdel better than anyone, and without their guidance, our departments would be unable to communicate during critical emergencies. Over the course of the Holmdel Fire Company's 13 years of care to our town, our camaraderie and teamwork has only strengthened. Whenever the extra manpower is needed, whether it is for getting a critical patient out of a mangled wreck, or just safely moving a larger patient down the stairs, they are there for us. Similarly, at fires we are there backing them up, ensuring that once they leave the fire, they are monitored and immediately treated for any injury. But, there is one piece that is truly the cornerstone of the First Aid Squad -- you. Without Holmdel’s residents and your continued support, there would be no volunteer first aid. Your support can be traced back to our beginnings, when our first mailing went out. As a 100% volunteer agency we rely on donations, and each of our 50 years could not have continued without your support. We would not be here today without the residents of Holmdel, hospital emergency department staff, Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, the Holmdel Police Department, our Fire Department, neighboring squads, township committee, and all of our dedicated members. Also, tonight could not be a success without the support of our generous Journal Sponsors and the 50th Gala Committee of Serena DiMaso, Demetri Orfanitopoulos, Jessica Trischitta, Mike Nikolis, and Jennifer Miller. So again, thank you all, and here’s to 50 more! Regards, Lauren Reidy President, Holmdel First Aid Squad
