The importance of quality health care for each patient is like showing compassionate care. Compassionate is an action taken by nurses as a form of concern for patients by providing emotional and physical support in dealing with every situation (Babaei & Teleghani, 2019)
Actually, a nurse not only provides health services but provides a feeling of comfort and safety and compassionate support to the patient. When performing nursing care, nurses must be able to build trusting relationships and help meet patient needs.
According to Dalvandi et al (2019), Compassionate nursing care is an important thing and nurses must pay more attention to the needs and expectations of patients. The provision of compassionate nursing care affects the extent of the patient's perception of the provision of good compassionate service by nurses. The following is an explanation of how to be a compassionate nurse.
First, feeling of kindness towards oneself before providing compassionate care to the patient and his family, feel what the patient feels and try to find a solution with empathy (Kusnanto, 2019).
Second, Nurses must have resilience, which refers to a person's ability to develop, think positively and still be able to provide quality care in any difficult situation (Kusnanto, 2019) .
Third, in nursing practice the nurse must provide professional care to patients holistically, make nursing diagnoses properly according to predetermined standards (IDHS), make a nursing plan that refers to the main problem (SIKI) and carry out according to the predetermined plan. As well as evaluating the nursing actions that have been carried out. (Kusnanto, 2019).
Fourth, Caring behavior that can be done is listening to the patient attentively, sincere, responsible, patient, giving a safe and comfortable feeling to the patient, calling the patient by the name he likes, being sensitive to client needs, provide information to patients about things that patients need to know so that patients can make decisions ( Arief, 2010).
Fifth, Understand the values, habits and beliefs that patients have because of the beliefs that someone has that influences them in seeing their disease, Involving patients and their families in making decisions in the nursing process that make them feel like they are in a place. according to Jean Watson the essence of nursing, namely: caring. Then cultural sensitivity, will create a nurse who is comfortable and easy to communicate with patients, avoiding criticizing patients openly (Hofmeyer et, al., 2016).
As a nurse, compassion can be shown by practicing good manners. Good manners is the key to compassion, because a nurse who practices that certainly has compassion (Joanna, 2016).
Practicing good manners can be manifested in a number of ways Eye Contact. Eye contact can connect nurse and patient, with 1 looking into the patient's eyes when talking, is a form of courtesy to the patient which indicates that we pay attention to what the patient is talking about. Nonverbal communication can be seen from the eyes and face. Based on research conducted by Karomah (2014), at Dadi Makassar Hospital, eye contact with patients was proven to make patients feel valued so that many patients were initially reluctant to talk to nurses, but are now able to communicate about their illness to nurses.
2 We also practice good manners by open communication and positive body language. The nurse can implement open communication with the patient by asking open- ended questions so that the patient can tell her current condition. Based on research conducted by Karomah (2014), at Dadi Makassar Hospital, This study proves that positive body language such as holding the patient's hand, bending towards the client, not folding the legs or arms when talking makes the patient feel that the nurse is very compassionate towards him so that the patient is comfortable during the nursing care that the nurse performs.
To be a compassionate nurse is Christ-centered. God is glorified by nursing practice which is based on biblical truth: (Shelly, 2009). 1. Inviting the patient to pray or pray to the patient, if the patient refuses do not be forced. 2. Invite the pastor, or other religious figures according to the patient's beliefs to pray together.
In conclusion, compassionate health care is a skill that a nurse should have in any situation. This is an effort to improve quality service. A nurse provides nursing care that is compassionate so that it can understand what the patient needs. Therefore, a nurse must have compassionate skills that start with oneself in order to apply it in compassionate nursing care that way the nurse views the patient as a person who must be cared for wholeheartedly by paying attention to the beliefs the patient has.
