I AM PROUD TO BE A NURSE BY : AGNES REALITA A ZANDROTO AGUS HELLY P A ZEBUA SUNARTI W P GULTOM PELITA HARAPAN UNIVERSITY
There are all kinds of jobs that are interesting and easy to do, but we chose to be a nurse. Some people think a nurse is just someone who is in charge of administering drugs, injecting, and doctor’s companion, but actually a nurse means something more than that.
Nurses are nursing care providers who have a professional function to be responsible for knowing the patient's basic needs and helping to fulfill them. Nursing is about science and art of helping someone learn how to care for themselves and helping them when they can't meet their own needs. Nursing focuses on the patient's response to illness rather than on the disease.
However, currently the public's perception of nurses has a negative stigma. In a study conducted by Fahriati (2015), 4 out of 10 people interviewed said that nurses were doctor's helpers, and had bad qualities, on the contrary 6 out of 10 said that nurses were noble jobs and cared about the patient's needs. Bad qualities Doctor's helpers Others stigma ,Therefore through this book we hope that the public perception of nurses can be more positive by providing the reasons why nursing is a great .profession
The first reason of why nursing is a great profession is that nurses saved many lives. In carrying out their duties and responsibilities, nurses are dealing with health conditions that lead to life and death. Nurses treat many people with different health problems and with different treatments. There are palliative patients, emergencies, infectious diseases, and so on so that nurses are expected to be able to master many things.
In addition to saving patients' lives, nurses provide holistic care. Holistic is a comprehensive treatment that includes biological, psychological, social and spiritual (biopsychosociospiritual) (Dossey, as cited in Dwidiyanti & Uliya, 2017). In addition to saving patients' lives, nurses provide holistic care. Holistic is a comprehensive treatment that includes biological, psychological, social and spiritual (biopsychosociospiritual) (Dossey, as cited in Dwidiyanti & Uliya, 2017).
Nurses also provide caring care, where the nurse pays attention to the patient, listens and is always present at the patient's side. Caring is the heart of nursing and is personal. Swanson said that there are five categories or caring processes, namely knowing, doing together, doing for, ability, and overcoming trust (Potter & Perry, 2010). So, nurses saved many lives of people with different health problems with caring and holistic care.
Secondly, nurses are multitasking, they are good at doing many things in the same time. Nurses are good at managing time. Sometimes, at the hospital the nurses get so busy that they do not even have time to eat. Therefore, the nurse adapts to the time and manages the time as best as possible. In addition, at one time the nurse is given the responsibility of caring for many patients, sometimes 5 to 8 people.
Nurses are also always there when needed, signaling helping relationships. Helping relationship includes 3 things, namely, a therapeutic relationship, caring, and empathy. So, nurses work in a multitasking manner, good at managing time, and available whenever needed.
Nurses have integrity. In the medical world, neither nurses nor other medical personnel may tell patient secrets to anyone, including peers. This has also become one of the promises (oaths) made by the nurse. Florence Nightingale also stated that the nurse's oath is tied to the confidentiality of all personal matters of the patient during medical treatment (Kelly, as cited in Petros & Theodoros, 2010).
Confidentiality about patients is also contained in the Constitution, that patient information must be kept confidential by nurses from other medical personnel. (Petros & Theodoros, 2010). Therefore, nurses are trustworthy because they have integrity.
Being a nurse is a job to be proud of. Nurses accompany patients from their worst conditions until they get cured. Nurses work with integrity where they maintain patient privacy and are honest. Although being a nurse is tiring and time consuming, nurses can handle it with time management. Nursing is a great profession and I am proud to be one of them in the future.
