Word from President Sona Kourtian-Doniguian President RCBC RY 2021-2022 YES, WE DID… It feels like only yesterday I was still addressing for the start of my year… With a rich, full and abundant program, the year is over in no time! We are pleased, happy and proud for a year where we achieved more than what we expected; we started the year when lockdown was still enforced, and with the financial crisis deteriorating more and more with every passing day. But none could stop our way: after almost eighteen months of “forced hibernation”, we had to revive our club, our activities and most importantly our projects; and revival we did. We started our year with an exceptional handover in Lebanon’s most prestigious address, and continued the year with that same high note, however always considering the economic situation and doing our due diligence in keeping our standards without adding a financial burden to our members and guests. We were open in our activities and extending our invitations to all the clubs in Lebanon, having guests participating in our in-person functions from all over Lebanon, and on our zoom meetings from all over the world. Our outstanding keynote speakers (28 No.) enriched our weekly meetings (webinars) by addressing subjects from Rotary Theme of the month to homeland & community issues, to world topical subjects-financial, educational, oil & gas, political elections, world economy, and all… attracting participants, and in many occasions reaching the overwhelming attendance of over 60 participants single-handedly, all by ourselves as a single club! We had a record number of meetings (5 No.) under the direct auspices of the District Governor. We had a record number of eight (8 No.) fellowship activities, that attracted many, and became “Talk of the Town” and even “Talk of the District”. Our core focus of the year was to exert due diligence in following up on our projects: long “planned” GG projects were finally materialized, and even executed and handed over (1 No.), long “planned” GG projects were finally submitted and approved (1No.), previously started projects (4 No.) and two scholarship GGs (2 No) were closely followed up ensuring the completion & handing over of many (4 No.), revived one dormant GG (1 No.), new projects serving the community were vigorously implemented, and last but not least, a 4
Word from President major new GG (132,500 USD) was submitted and approved within only months of the year (1 No.) - In total: ten (10 No.) GGs. This, in addition to Fifteen (15 No.) projects serving the community, and proudly pioneering in adopting a project beyond our country – in India. We extended our international connections by establishing new Twinning (RC Bangalore Brigades, India), and our members participating in Inter-Country Committees (ICC). Our BCRAC family extended, as 6 new members were enrolled this year, and 4 more on their way. We actively participated in various country wide and district seminars tackling Rotary topics, last being the District Conference in Yerevan, Armenia, where I personally was honored to be one of the panelists in the PEACE breakout session. It was not easy: the path was not smooth; but yet again we know “If the path is smooth, then you are on someone else’s…”. No, we had our own path that we crossed with confidence and determination… And YES, WE DID… 5
Word from RI President Shekhar Mehta RI President RY 2021-2022 MY DEAR CHANGEMAKERS, I wish each of you and your families a great Rotary New Year! Together, let us make it the best year of our lives, by making it a year to grow more and do more. Let this be a year of changemakers, and let us begin with our membership. That is precisely why the Each One, Bring One initiative is so important. During this year, I urge you to dream of new ways in which Rotary can expand its reach into your community and therefore the world. If each member introduces one person to Rotary, our membership can increase to 1.3 million by July 2022. So, let’s just do it! Imagine the change we, as Rotary members, can make when there are so many more of us! More people to care for others, more people to Serve to Change Lives. Think of the impact we can have through grow more, do more. More members will enable us to embark on bigger and bolder service projects. And each of us can also continue to serve in our own personal ways, responding to needs in our communities. The beauty of Rotary is that service means different things to different people around the world. One element, however, that we can incorporate into all of our service initiatives is empowering girls. Unfortunately, even in this day and age, girls and young women face disproportionate challenges all over the world. We have the power to lead the charge for gender equality. Empowering girls and young women to have greater access to education, better health care, more employment, and equality in all walks of life should be embedded in every Rotary project we launch. Girls are future leaders, so we must ensure that we help them shape their future. These are challenging times, and I compliment each of your efforts in grappling with COVID-19. No challenge is too big for Rotarians. The bigger the challenge, the more passionate the Rotarian. Look at what we can do when we take on a colossal challenge such as eradicating polio. Look at the millions of lives we improve by strengthening access to water, sanitation, and hygiene. Look at what we do every year to promote peace in places where it seems unimaginable. Our basic education and literacy programs have nation-building impact. This year, let us challenge ourselves to do more such projects and programs that have national reachand impact. This year, let us Serve to Change Lives. 6
Word from the District Governor Ashot Karapetyan, District Governor RY 2021-2022 District 2452 Governor’s Monthly letter Welcome to a new Rotary Year 21-22 which may be known, one day, as the greatest in Rotary history!!! I am very honored and proud to begin this very important “Change Maker” Rotary Year as the Governor of our multinational District 2452, the best District in the Rotary World! We made it! After a challenging Rotary Year of meeting on Zoom, on July 3rd 2021 we started off a new Rotary Year by holding an in-person District Training Assembly and celebrating with lovely friends a very special Handover Ceremony, in Armenia! What a fruitful year this will be as we all are back together, in person, to do our Rotary work!! I want to give my heartfelt thanks, to DG 2020-2021 Mazen Alumran, who kept “pivoting” throughout his year to stay one step ahead of the pandemic; and to all the Club Presidents who held their clubs together to continue to meet and conduct club business. This meant that goals set could be met, and members of clubs would continue to feel connected. My biggest thanks go to all the Rotarians who “stayed connected” and continued to put their hearts and dedication to make Rotary the greatest service organization in the world. Many Service Projects were completed and new, necessary, valuable projects were created to meet the needs of all communities in our District, who desperately needed extra help due to COVID. I am continually amazed by all that has been accomplished in 20-21. Congratulations to all! It is the start of a new Rotary Year! A time to celebrate and a time to grow. Our District Leadership team is here to serve our 2045 Rotarians in 87 Rotary Clubs, 51 Rotaract Clubs and 22 Interact Clubs that span in 9 countries and 3 continents. How appropriate it is that July is “Bring a Friend to Rotary” month! We can start following our RI President, Shekhar Mehta’s call of “Each One, Bring One” and, as importantly, “Lose none” to retain our current members. Both of these initiatives will help us to increase our membership and “Grow More to Do More.” Let this year be a time when we have more Rotarians to help complete our goals while remembering to ENJOY OUR FRIENDSHIP in the process! I have been blessed to be working with distinguished Rotarians for my Rotary career. I know for sure that together we will “Serve to Change Lives”. I truly believe that one of those lives that we will change, through service, will be our own! Let’s take what we’ve learned in 2020 and 2021 and continue to stay connected and inspire our clubs; continue to look after each other, and continue to look after our communities, while Serving Above Self! I look forward to seeing you all soon, during my District Governor’s Visits and Country Training assemblies. Take good care and stay safe! 7
Word from Assistant Governor Shant Chinchinian, Assistant Governor RY 2021-2022 Dear President Sona, & fellow Rotarians of RC Beirut Cosmopolitan, It gives me a great pleasure to write to you on this occasion of completing your year, especially as I witnessed such a successful year – Congratulations! RCBC has always been a vibrant and active club, a true example of Rotary’s service, leadership and teamwork. And President Sona Kourtian not only proved to enjoy the leadership, passion and perseverance of her predecessors, but raised the bar high in her performance and activities throughout the year. Despite all the difficulties that challenged Lebanon in 2021 – 2022, she was able to lead RC Beirut Cosmopolitan to a year full of vital projects, significant activities and outstanding fellowships, raising the bar higher every time, with every new function in her year. Crucial educational programs such as the donation of laptops, iPads, and the distribution of university scholarships were at the central focus of the year, as well as the follow up and successful completion of Global Grants & Projects, two of which I was privileged to be able to attend & witness in person: The “Schneller School Photovoltaic” renewable solar energy, andthe “NewGen Peace Builders”, both of which are first in their kind. Worth to also note other equally important GGs, projects, some ongoing, some completed, some joint projects with other Rotary clubs, a long list that am sure you’ll be elaborating in your end-of-year brochure, and the highlight that two additional Global Grants were initiated and approved in this year - Bravo! At the end, I would like to say “Thank You” to RC Beirut Cosmopolitan for their cooperation and zeal, despite the different challenges of our precious Lebanon. I feel proud as well as privileged to have served as your club’s Assistant Governor for the year 2021- 2022. The legacy is the result of numerous achievements and many years of experience that RC Beirut Cosmopolitan exemplifies, and I wish you repeated and continuous success in the years to come. 8

I am deeply grateful and humbled by your trust as I take on this essential role. As we look forward, I wish to acknowledge the notable achievements of more than 25 years of selfless hard work and effective team effort as our club tackles the most audacious initiatives; I express my sincere admiration and gratitude to all the Past Presidents and their teams, for they have defined each of the past years with a unique and notable success. Our club has always been characterized by its diversity and cosmopolitan nature, all united by the same high Rotarian values, goodwill and a strong commitment to serve above self. Our rich pool of knowledge, expertise and strong fellowship is our most valuable asset as we work hand in hand to serve our community. The Rotary International theme for Rotary Year 2022-23 is ‘Imagine Rotary’. A broad scoped theme that brings with it a powerful message of hope and a strong belief that we in Lebanon can overcome the dire circumstances and together make a significant difference. As we witness the devastated situation in our country, especially the effects of the fuel crisis, coupled with a heartfelt devotion to preserve our environment, the theme chosen for our club for the incoming Rotary year is ‘Renewable Energy’. With the invaluable backing of our incoming Board along with all the teams and members, and the creativity and dynamism of our vibrant Rotaractors, I have no doubt that RCBC will mark the incoming year with impactful projects that will enhance the community’s social and economic growth while deepening the bonds of friendship and fellowship. It is with your support and trust that I take the helm of this prestigious club for the incoming year as we join hands to contribute to our community while we strive to preserve our club’s proud legacy. This was the very first genocide in modern history when an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were either killed or forcibly assimilated. After the Ottoman losses against the Russian Empire, the government blamed the Armenians for their early reversals, so they began deporting them and massacring them to establish a clear ethnic Turkish majority in areas inhabited by Armenians for millennia. A few thousand churches, monasteries and community institutions were destroyed. These horrors were a decisive factor for the eventual codification of genocide as a crime under International Law. Dr. Gibson, a dedicated Rotarian and Philanthropist, is also District International Service Committee Chair and District Peace Fellowship Chair (D2452). In his remarks, Dr. Gibsontook us on a whirlwind tour of the world economic crisis. He explained how the “baseline” case changed in few months from a high growth and transitory inflation to low growth and persistent inflation today. The fallout of the Covid pandemic is still felt around the globe today; the severe interruption to supply chain and recurring lockdown in China are major contributors. In this very challenging climate, a business needs to adopt four qualities to thrive: Resilience, Optionality, Agility and Patience. The combination of high inflation triggering high interest rates and a strong dollar are creating havoc in financial markets that will have a ripple effect globally. The recovery will be slow and painful. The only bright spot is the rise in oil prices that is helping the Gulf states continue to fund their ambitious growth plans for the future. Meanwhile, the rest of the world needs to adjust to the new economic reality. 43
