Street Art by Réka Bosits, 8AJust like last year, everybody was invited to take part in the OME photographycompetition. The theme was “street art”. But what is street art actually?photo: Csenge Király, 7B Street art includes every creation done at public lo- cations, but not for commercial aims. Within street art there are many different types like graffiti, stencil, stickers or posters. Street art is mass-communication which you can see in public places. The motivation for many artists is to have the possibility to create the environment while some of them only want to spread their name. The artists use the cities like a gigantic canvas. Moreover, street art often protests against something. In many regions of the world, street art groups spend hours decorating plain walls with colorful figures and graphics. The final result looks like a great abstract art creation. But the majority of people say the artists are simply vandals and the creations remain only for a short time. Furthermore, street art means, in many cases, damage to private property. In Hungary the artists can be punished with imprisonment. Most of the artists are nameless and act illegally. But Keith Haring is the most known and most important graffiti artist. Street art became known in Hungary in the 90s first of all in the form of stickers and graffiti. Besides Budapest, Szeged can be proud too of many street art creations. I think the street art creations can be beautiful but we should not forget where the borders between decoration and damage are.Dear OME readers! In our last magazine we announced our second photo com-petition. We asked you all to send in pictures of Street Art.We received lots of photos and it was really hard to choosejust one winner out of all the great ones you sent us. But, weeventually found one that we all agreed on. The picture wassent in by Csenge Király and it´s actutally the cover pictureof this issue.Below you can see some great pictures taken by our parti-pants. Ryan Arnott 8C Congratulations Csenge Király: You have won our grand prize, a JBL Bluetooth Speaker.

school lifeAWESOME DAY by Vilmos Szász 6B Some children say an awesome day is like when we go to the Aquapark or something like that. This year’s Fat Tuesday was a totally awesome day because we started with a tasty breakfast in our class. There was a lot of food; eggs, baked beans, sausages and lots of drinks too, like orange juice and milk. Everything you could imagine. Then we started our trip to the Hungarian National Gallery to visit the wonderful “Rip- pl-Rónai exhibition”. Rippl-Rónai was a Hungarian artist who painted some of the most beautiful pictures. Not only in Hungary but in Paris too. There he met the painter Aristide Maillol. They became friends just like kids in the 21st century. We were very excited to see their work as the energy between these 2 artists was very special. We went into a room with a huge picture on the ceiling. We had to lay down to see it. The picture was made by Rónai in a letter to Maillol. We saw a lot of different pictures. Some of them were a bit dark and others were more colorful. We all enjoyed the guided tour very much. Then we went upstairs to make pottery, for example, a vase, a plate etc. Mr. Mayr and Eszter néni watched us and saw the different clay creations. Everybody made different sculptures, nobody the same. We helped each other because we are classmates and we like to work in teams. Unfortunately, we didn’t finish them but they looked pretty good. Finally, we got our jackets and we said goodbye to the gallery. Actually, that´s what I call an “awesome” day!

The LiteratureEvening by Alina Benedek 7B Every year in the OME school there’s a night in which literature rules, where 5th and 6th graders guide us through the night. It’s somewhen around late winter. This year it was on the 12th of March. Students from fourth to eighth grade read their texts in three languages. But you could even see films and hear raps. Of course everyone had a chance to read their texts the day before, on Literature day. I had the opportunity to read my text. Actually, we made a kind of a play. My story was a detective story but you could hear tales, novels, horror stories, poems, and made up stories which could have been real. My favourite one was my classmate’s text about how she found a dead mouse in her bed. But I’m sure everyone has her/his favourite one. A bonus was that, in the beginning of the event, we could hear our school choir sing a really cool song from the movie Lion King. I think Literature Evening is something we should do more often! The school choir by Craig Arnott 5AWe have a school choir that is led by Mr Hajós. The choir practises in two parts. On Tuesday it is the 6th and 7th grades andon Wednesdays the 5th grade children practise. We all practice between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm which is half of our 1-hour lunchbreak. We perform at masses in the school and this year, in January ,we also got to sing at the 18th Annual Budapest BurnsSupper, which was a really big blast for me personally because I joined the choir this year and that was my first appearanceoutside of school. The whole choir has a lot of fun singing at concerts. I like the choir and I hope I can join in again next year!

Scottish bagpipers by Ryan Arnott 8C On Friday, 23rd January some Scottish bagpipers and drummers visited our school. Originally, they came to play for the Budapest Burns Supper, which is a traditional Scottish evening that is organised every year. Bagpipe bands in Scotland often have 40 people playing in them, but this band only had eight. Most of them started playing the instruments when they were 9-10 years old. Rab, who is the leader of the band, said that he originally did not want to play the bagpipes but his mum and dad made him do it. The more he played, the more he liked it. He also told us that his band back in Scotland has played all over the world; in New Zealand, Japan, Canada, France, Spain and Russia. Before Christmas we collected all sorts of presents for children at the children’s hospital on Tűzoltó utca as part of our Advent Programme. The pipers also help children in the hospital and, to thank us for what we did, they came to the school and played a few tunes. First they played for the 5th and 6th graders, then for the 7th and 8th graders. They played 4-5 songs, including the Scottish national anthem. After they finished playing, the pupils in 8a, 8b and 8c were allowed to stay and try out some of the instruments. Unfortunately, we could not try the bagpipes because the pipers said it would be a bit too hard for us. But one thing is sure, the instruments certainly make a lot of noise!SPEECH CONTEST by Lilien Gruber 8C It all started on an ordinary school day. It was a German lesson when suddenly my teacher stopped talking about grammar and started telling us about the possibility to take part in an Austrian speech contest. Firstly, the school had to make a preliminary decision; which two candidates from 15 could go to Austria and which had to stay home. Since I am a really competitive person I automatically wanted to be a candidate. We had to write a text in German, which lasted for 6-8 minutes (which I thought was going to be easy at first, but when it came to actually writing it, it proved to be way hard- er than I expected) about a topic we would like to talk about. I thought about it and said: Let’s give it a shot. I literally spent all of my following weekend writing it as well as I could. My choice of topic was Dreams because, in my opinion, dreams are really interesting but still fun to talk about. After finally finishing it I started working on how to present it.

Weeks passed by and the big day ar- rived; the pre-contest. A lot of amaz- ing texts were created, so it was a pity that just 2 of us could go to Austria. My best friend Dorottya Iványi and I made it into the second round, which was in St. Pölten. There we had to pres- ent our creations again but this time more than 200 people were listening to us. I proudly can say all of my work paid off. I won and Dóri was second at the regional contest and I got into the national competition with my results. The national championship will take place in Vienna in June. I think it was an amazing experience! I really am looking forward to the competition in Vienna!////////fur///////NO PAIN NO GAME by Lucas Lausegger & Miklós Molnár 6B On the 8th of May the class 6b went to the Ludwig Muse- um to visit an exhibition about gaming. We discovered a lot of interesting gaming machines. Our favourite one was the painstation. In this game two people play against each other and the loser receives an electric shock. Another interesting game was the snake. In this game we had to push buttons with our legs so that the snake didn’t crash into the wall. A nice guide showed us around, explained all the games and informed us about the artists and the development of the games. Two German media artists and game designers are behind this exhibition: Volker Morawe and Tilman Reiff. Morawe previously worked as an electronic hit producer while Reiff worked as an interface planner. They met at the Cologne Media Academy. They moved in together and began to work on a number of unusual installations that invite people not only to play but also to think about and “feel” their work. Their artwork has already been shown in New York, Tokyo, Ars Electronica Linz and many oth- er places. The exhibition in Bu- dapest was organised and sup- ported by the Goethe-Institut. We had a lot of fun and we hope we will visit more exiting expo- sitions in the future!

sportFENCING by Laura Wetzker 6B My name is Laura and now I am going to describe my favourite sport: it is fencing. For Fencing you need a fencing plastron, a chest protector, a jacket and breeches, an epee, a glove, a bodywire and a helmet. I started fencing 2.5 years ago. After the first year I was a foil fencer, but now I changed to epee. These are two different kinds of weapons and they have different rules. Be- fore fencing I did aerobics, but I didn`t like it as much as fencing. I have got training three times a week and one special lesson with my Master. Not so long ago I had a fencing competition and I took third place. That was my first competition this season and I was really happy.Kayaking by Kende Bognar 6B I started kayaking five years ago and I like it. When I went to the Olympic games with my family three years ago I saw a lot of Hungarian kayakers. It inspired me to continue kayaking and work harder. Now I’m training in LSE (Lágyman- yosi spari egyesület). It means 4 to 6 trainings a week. It’s a very good sport. I spend a lot of time outdoors on the water. I have good friends in the club. We usually train together and we have a lot of programmes together too, for example we sometimes cook after training. We have races, too. My favorite one is the Eskimo cup. It’s not just kayaking but also running and throwing. I love kayaking long distances. One of the longest trips I did was 70 km. I recommend kayaking for people who like outodoor activities, especially in the nature.

Reyer tournament by Franka Tóth 7B There is a tournament which a basketball team, called Reyer, organizes in Italy next to Venice. They invite teams near Italy, for example Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary. My team went to this tournament. We played 5 games and one of them was the finals. And we won! We all were very happy! But one of the best parts of the cup was when the players got a giant chocolate egg which was more than 1 meter high. They broke it in small parts so every player could get a little choc- olate! This is a tradition because the tournament always ends a day before Easter. I really liked the tournament, because on the last day when the finals were, was my birthday. So it was an awesome gift that we won and it was also very good that I could spent a lot of time with my teammates which makes me always happy.WORKOUTS by Sofia Filipov 8CWorkouts are the best way to keep yourself fit. You can do them completely free whenever you want to and you don’t needthat much space. If you’re not playing any sports or if you just want to work on your body, this is the best way.First of all, you can find a lot of workout videos on YouTube. I personally love XHIT Daily’s channel, because they haveevery single kind of workout and they also have Victoria’s Secret Series. You just have to choose what kind you want to do.You can either work on your abs, your legs, things, arms or whatever you would like to. Then you click on the right videoand do the exercizes they show you.I really love doing workouts because I get to choose which muscle I’ll work on. Actually, I do have normal training twice aweek, but I still do workouts almost every day. I really want to get a six pack, so my New Years Resolution was that I’d do asix pack-workout every day until I reach my goal. That means I’ve been working on my abs for quite a long time now andI’m so happy that I’m starting to get what I want. Because the only way to reach your goal is to work hard for it.I hope I could inspire you, so get out there and work on your summer body because we all know you want to look flawlessin that swimsuit! And, by the way, it’s really important to drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated and healthy. So don’t forget that.

books/moviesThe Giver by Janka Faller 7BLet me talk about my favorite book. It is “The Giver”, writ-ten by Lois Lowry. This book tells a story about a 12-year-old boy Jonas in the future. In this world, things have be-come so corrupted that there is no pain, love, happiness, joy, or holidays. It is a totally different and strange worldwhere to give birth to somebody is a job, kids get num-bers, there are no differences, no one is rich or poor. Thisis all managed by the council of the wise. They steer all as-pects of people’s lives, choose their spouses and give themchildren. Jonas has very special work in this world. He isthe guardian of memories. Thus he finds out things thatwe naturally do. He starts to see colors, feel emotions andremember old memories what no one else can. The booktells the story of how he can cope with all of these things.I liked this book because nothing similar had come to mymind before and, when I read it, I was simply shocked andcaptivated. It is full of surprising twists which no one couldpredict. For example, we do not know from the beginningthat they do not see colors; we find it out in the middleof the book, when Jonas begins to see them. The story isexciting, very complex and imaginative. I simply loved itand recommend it wholeheartedly to everyone. It revealedto me how good our life is, to enjoy it and to be gratefuland appreciate it. by Ryan Arnott 8CJames Bond is the most famous spy the world has ever known. His life in the shadowy world of the British Secret Service wasbrilliantly documented in the classic books by Ian Fleming. The first film made from the books was Doctor No in 1962.The newest, Spectre, is currently in production and will be re-leased sometime in 2015.However, we have only been allowed to see parts of JamesBond’s years as a child. But SilverFin is a book which tells usexactly how James Bond got to be a spy. It tells us how he wenton his first adventures and even what problems he had to facein school. The book also has a few sequels such as Blood Fever,Double or Die, Hurricane Gold and By Royal Command. Irecommend the books to anyone whol likes action and wouldlike to know more about James Bond.

city lifeLegends about Budapest by Karolina Schmidt-Schweizer 7B The lions at the Chain bridge Legend: A man who built the lions at the Chain bridge died because the people who saw it laughed at them. They said that the lions havent got tongues. When he heard this he became really depressed and jumped into the Danube. Reality: The lions have tongues, but we can´t see them. The man didn´t jump into the Danube. The Woman who turned into a stone statueLegend:On one of Tököly street´s balconies you can see a statue of awoman. Jump City by Adel Pinter 7a Jump City opened on the 1st of April,2015. People of differ- ent ages, weights and skills can have fun there. It is an 1100m2 trampoline park on the top of the West End shopping centre in Budapest. You can jump on many different sizes and types of trampolines there. There are long, short and wide ones. There is also a “sponge pool” and three basketball back- boards there. It is so much fun doing difficult jumps on the sponge pool and you can´t get hurt. Playing basketball while bouncing on a trampoline is really cool. The entry fee is not very cheap, but I think it is well worth it.ST. PATRICK´S DAY by Robi Hanson 7B St. Patrick’s day is an Irish national holiday in memory of bishop St. Patrick. It is celebrated every year on the 17th of March. My Godfather is Irish and he invited us to go to the St. Patrick’s day parade in Budapest. The meeting point was at Szabadság tér. There were thou- sands of people. They all wore something with green on it. Some of them had a red beard and a green Irish hat. There were some Irish dancers, Irish musicians and you could taste Irish Whisky. Then we started a march. The streets of Budapest were closed because of the march! Half of Andrássy Street was closed. It was really cool to go on this march which ended at an Irish pub. We had a lot of fun!

ZOO café by Janka Faller 7BA week ago I was in a really interesting café; I had nev-er seen anything like it before. It’s in downtown and it’scalled the Zoo café. Its name isn’t a mistake; the wholeplace is full of animals. But the animals are not on bill-boards or photos…they’re alive in cages, aquariums, ter-rariums or simply just set free... There are really manyanimals from cats ‘till rays. If you sit they give you vari-ous animals one by one.First we got a small chameleon, which was very cuteand my little sister instantly fell in love with it. Then thewaitress brought us a big, flat like reptile and placed iton our table. We thought it was dead but we suddenlyrealised that it was breathing. We didn’t want to touch iteven though it was obviously calm and harmless.Another family gave us their turtle, a really tiny one. Itturned out to be my favourite despite the fact it was rest-ing next to the menu all the time.We got a hedgehog as well which was quite cute at first. But when I grabbed it, it peed on my hands. After this, Ididn´t want to be its friend anymore. Then came a SNAKE which I almost dropped at first. But then it wrapped around my neck. There were, of course, many other animals: reptiles, fish, parrots, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas andsome huge predator cats hunting around all the time.I enjoyed this afternoon very much and I really recom-mend this exotic place in downtown Budapest to every-body.MONDO CONthe big happening at the Hungexpo by Csenge Király 7B What is Mondo con? A big festival for the readers of Mondo, and for the peo- ple who wants to know more about Japan. Ok. And what’s Mondo? It’s a Magazine about Japan. And were you at Mondo con alone? No, with my friend Ilka. And how was the meeting? A bit weird. Everybody was wearing the costume of their favourite manga/anime-hero. Did you also wear a costume? Yes, I was Akacho, from the manga Korugata de tsuki, and Ilka was Kisamaru, from the manga Shimufuri Ka- suka. How old were the most people there? The most of them were more than 18. How many people were there? More than 1000.

around the worldCopenhagen by Tilki Tekla 8ACopenhagen (danish: København) is the capital and the most populated city of Denmark. 2 million people live there, soa little bit more than in Budapest. It is located at Sjaeland and Amager (both are islands). It is connected with Malmö,Sweden by a long bridge, called Øresund Bridge, which is ca. 16 km long.I was there in March and it was perfect and very cold. We visited all the sights, including the Den Lille Havfrue (TheLittle Mermaid). The flight took 1 1/2 hours, but we landed in Malmö, not Copenhagen, and on the first day we stayedthere for a couple of hours. We went over the Øresund Bridge and it was wonderful. We had a sunny day, so we saw thesea and the windmills, which were on the sea.Denmark is still a kingdom and the queen lives in Copenhagen in the Amalienborg Slot. Unhappily, we couldn’t visit it,but we saw the changing of the Livgarden, which is the royal guard. They walk every day from the Amalienborg Slot tothe Rosenborg Slot. The Rosenborg Slot was the residence of the queen and the king till the 18th century. The Nyhavn isa port which is in the middle of the city. I think most of the people have seen it already in pictures, because it is famousfor its colorful houses. When Hans Christian Andersen lived it was a ‘Red-lamp area’ with tattoo salons and small, dirtyand cheap bars. Today there are only restaurants, coffee bars and some good hotels.I really enjoyed Copenhagen and I recommend everybody to visit it because it is a wonderful city.

Thailand In my last holiday me and my family went by Robert Hanson 7B to Thailand. First, we stayed in Bangkok for 5 days where we celebrated New Year’sThere are also Thai things like vanilla, curry, fruits, Eve. Bangkok is a really nice city! We visitedvegetables, etc. It’s really cool because it’s a very special many awesome temples and we were at themarket! You can also eat in restaurants which are other floating market near Bangkok. The Floatingboats. They cook on the boat and you can buy the food! Market is a place where you can buy things. You have to rent a boat and then they take you on the water streets from shop to shop. You can buy a lot of things there, from fake Gucci to fake Louis Vuitton. After the Floating Market we went to a tiger farm where you can play, feed and stroke some baby tigers! We played for 15 minutes and fed them milk! The baby tiger was so cute. He looked like a soft toy. Our guides took pictures and they took care of us because a baby tiger can also bite you because he wants to play with you. It was an unforgettable experience having a real tiger on my lap.On the 1st January 2015 we wentto Ko Samui. This is a small is-land in Thailand. We were therefor 5 days! We didn´t do any-thing, we only took naps thewhole day! It was really greatto take a rest and swim in theocean! After a 20 hour flight wearrived home at Budapest on the6th of January. It was a fantastic holiday andThailand is now one of my favou-rite places in the world.

Ihave seen owls on exercise books, on bags, on phone cases etc…On my school bag there is an owl too. Usually they are very co-lourful. They exist even in the form of a candle, or photo holder. You can buy them very expensively or at a very cheap price, butto be honest: It’s almost the same. There are many jewels, medals, rings, bracelets with a colourful or a single-coloured owl as pat-tern. What comes next? Elephants or snakes?!

Pennyboarding SKORT by Robi Hanson 7B by Panka Ondrusek 7B A skort is a cross between shorts and skirts. They are really trendy right now. You can find them in bigger shops. Female athletes used them first but over the years, it has become popular with designers. Now you can find them in any color, design or pattern. I have one with polka dots and a pink one. I like it because it is really comfortable and elegant. It is really good on a hot summer day.Pennyboarding is not the same as skateboarding! This is a stick which you can attachThe Pennyboard is smaller and better. I’ve got a black to your phone so it makes yourone! It’s not for tricks like a skateboard.
