MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Roll No: 1.009/60 Basu John was the Headboy at St. Bede’s High S c h o o l b e f o r e j o i n i n g I I T M a d r a s f o r h i s B . Te c h and was active in college athletics. After graduating with the Governor’s Gold Medal from IITM in 1965, Basu did research at Schneider Optischer Werk e in Bad Kreuznach, Ger many. He later returned to Chennai and received his doctorate in Optics from IIT Madras and also started his working life as a Reader at IIT Madras. D r. B a s u Jo h n l a t e r l e f t t h e w o rl d o f a c a d e m i c s when he took over the running of the family business. He was the Managing Partner of Klein & Peyerl, Chennai, one of the oldest Photographers and Blockmak ers in the countr y. He also entered the IT field in the mid-eighties when he started Mindspace, a corporate IT consultancy. Mindspace helped set up and run the computer lab and the first computer courses at Loyola College, Chennai. He was also a photographer of high repute; after the Gujarat Earthquake, he raised funds for the victims through a series of photographic e xhibitions across the countr y. D r. B a s u p a s s e d a w a y i n 2 0 0 3 a n d i s s u r v i v e d by his wife Mariamma, two children (his daughter S a r a ( s e t t l e d i n C h e n n a i ) a n d s o n Yo h a n ( s e t t l e d i n the USA)) and four grandchildren. 47

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Roll No: 1.021/60 Esmail was a Gymnastics enthusiast and represent- ed IITM at Inter IIT meets at Bombay, Khara gpur and Madras. He started his career with Bombay Oxygen Corp in April ‘65 as Asst Engineer; was involved in Design and Installation of various equipments and reloca- tion of partial plant. Left for USA in August ‘67 and g raduated in MS from Villanova Univ ersity. He then worked for FMC Corp (‘67 to ‘71), Sun Ship Building (‘72 to ‘82). Newport News ShipBuilding (‘82 to ’96), Kvaerner Shipyard, various consult- ing companies including KBR Engineering, Jacobs Engineering (‘96 to 2013). During his long stint in Ship Building Industry and Consultancy, Esmail designed various ship systems on tankers and container ships, conducted testing of equipment and systems during ship construction and sea trial, worked on various equipment and systems on submarines and aircraft carriers and designed and participated in testing of the main engine. He also designed modular equipment packages, pressure vessels, etc. and was involved in Plant Layouts. Married to Sakina (1967); has two daughters, one son, three g randchildren. Lives in Brookhaven, PA, USA and enjoys traveling, gardening. 49

P r o f e s s o r a t I I T, K a n p u r, d u r i n g 1 9 7 2 - 7 9 , a n d , m o v e d t o U S A w h e re he began to teach and became Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, at the Old Dominion Univ ersity, USA. He was Associate Te c h n i c a l E d i t o r f o r s i x y e a rs a n d t h e n Te c h n i c a l Editor for three years for the international archival Jour nal called EXPERIMENTAL MECHANICS. He was elected a Fellow of the Society for Experi- mental Mechanics. He won a Best Paper Award f r o m T h e Jo u r n a l o f E x p e r i m e n t a l Te c h n i q u e s. H e presented invited papers at several international conferences, and, he was an external examiner for several doctoral dissertations in USA and India. He had also presented invited lectures at several Indian Colleges and Universities. Married to Bharathi, he has a son, Kartik and d a u g h t e r, R a n j a n i , a n d t w o g ra n d ch i l d re n . H e i s currently settled in Virginia, USA . Prabhakaran continues in his passion, that is, teaching and writing articles. He had also written short stories, poems for Bhavan’s Journal. He keenly explores the spiritual realm of God and Life. 51

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Roll No: 2.009/61 After being Head Boy and recipient of Academic Roll of Honour at Delhi Public School, New Delhi, Ramesh joined IITM and stood first in Mechanical Engineering. He won many debating competitions at I I T. Ramesh joined IITD as Associate Lecturer for 6 months and in July '65 joined the DCM/Shriram Group as Senior Mana gement Trainee. He spent 14 years in various functions in the industr y. Mov ed to Nigeria 1979-84 as MD of two Plastics Packaging Companies; returned to Delhi and started 2 new Di- visions for Inalsa Ltd., manufacturing Small Home Appliances/FHP motors and Flexible Stainless Steel Hoses. Sold both businesses in 1999; later he moved to IT H/ware. Retired in 2012 as Exec. Vice-Chairman of Intex Te c h n o l o g i e s ( I n d i a ) L t d . E n g a g e d s i n c e t h e n i n advisory assignments in Manufacturing Cranes, AC components, etc. He was a member of many C o m m i t t e e s o f C I I , F I C C I , M A I T, I C E A a n d CEAMA. Married Usha in 1971. They have two sons, Sumer and Saket, two granddaughters and a grandson. Currently lives in Delhi. Fond of traveling, walking, music, reading and keeping up with old friends. 53

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Roll No: 1.097/60 An outstanding ‘Debater’ during IIT days and pop- ularly known as ‘SID’, he won several individual and team trophies, along with his batch-mate Ramesh A Vaswani. After graduating in 1965, SID was educated at C r a w f o r d I n s t i t u t e o f Te c h n o l o g y a n d I m p e r i a l College London and spent a year at the Science Policy Research Unit at Sussex. He then joined the D e p a r t m e n t o f S c i e n c e & Te c h n o l o g y, G O I . S u b s e - q u e n t l y, D r. S i dd h a r t h a w a s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h C S I R , ISRO and DRDO, New Delhi in various top posi- tions. He was also Secretary of the Science Adviso- ry Council to PM and Consultant – UN Environ- ment Programme. Retired from DRDO in 2004 as Emeritus Scientist; since then SID has served on various UN Commit- tees and been associated in India at senior posi- tions with MEA for Export Control Systems, Na- tional Institute of Advanced Studies, Aeronautical Society, United Ser vice Institution, Educational Board at the ‘Current Science’, Indian Academy of Science, Zaheer Science Foundation and National Maritime Foundation. SID married Gita in 1977 and the couple continues to live in Delhi. SID continues to be active profes- sionall y. 55

METALLURGY Roll No: 1.011/60 Bhagiradha Rao joined Defence Metallurgical Research Laborator y, Hyderabad as a scientist in 1965. After three decades of government service, he re t i re d f ro m D M R L a s a n A s s o c i a t e D i re c t o r. H e w a s the first in India to develop ‘Mechanical Alloying’ and also was the first to set up the unique ‘Hot Isostatic Press (HIP)’ way back in 1978. He also developed a complex HIP process for the first time in India to produce a critical missile component from alloy powders which got a Prize as the ‘Best P / M Pa r t o f t h e Ye a r ( 1 9 9 0 ) ’ . Fo r h i s p i o n e e r i n g research, he was awarded Ph.D.(Metallurgical Engineering) from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru in 1984.Post-retirement, he continues to promote PMHIP technology for aerospace applica- tions. H i s w i fe, D r. S u l o ch a n a , i s re t i re d P r i n c i p a l o f a degree college in Hyderabad, and his two daughters are well-qualified, married and settled in USA. He and his wife are now leading a fairly active life in a senior citizens’ apartment complex in Hyderabad. In his IIT days, his poem published in Campastimes won First Prize. 61

METALLURGY Roll No: 1.018/60 From 1965 to 1993, ‘Chandru’ worked for the Gov- ernment of India - in DMRL, Hyderabad as a scien- tist for 11 years, and later at MIDHANI, Hyderabad as Manager / General Manager for 17years where he was engaged in the manufacture of superalloys, tita- nium, and special alloys. He completed his MBA from Osmania University in 1984, while working at Midhani. His next assignment was as President of a German JV company in Hyderabad for 3 years. Chandru then m o v e d t o I n d o n e s i a a s Te c h n i c a l D i r e c t o r o f I n d o b a j a during 1996-98 for setting up an alloy steel plant on a green field site. Back in India for consultancy as- signments for 3 years, he migrated to the USA in 2002 on H1b visa, to work for a forged and hardened steel rolls manufacturer in Lima, OH, till 2017. He married Jayanthi in 1974 and has a daughter (Rekha) and son (Rajesh), both now well-settled in the USA. Retired in 2018, Chandru now spends qual- ity family time with his four grandchildren while in the USA and connecting up with family and friends/- school and college mates while in India. A k e e n s p o r t s m a n , h e w a s a C h e s s c h a m p i o n a t I I T, and played TT in inter-IIT meets and in inter facto- ry tourneys till 1985. 63

METALLURGY Roll No: 1.040/60 K. Mahesh passed away on 02-Feb-2019. He was another unique individual whose interests were as amazing as his talents. A t I I T, M a h e s h w a s m o s t n o t e d f o r r i d i n g h i s s e l f - b u i l t Go-Kart, his passion for photography and his unassuming nature, in spite of perhaps being one of the richest in the batch. After graduation in ‘65, Mahesh went to Bridge Foundry in UK to study Aluminum Die Casting. Upon retur n to India, he set up the same in Sundaram Clayton in 1971. He successfully initiated the Sundaram Brake Linings Plant (SBL) as a Joint Venture with Abe x Corporation of USA in 1976 and under his leadership built it into a world class company. He was recognized at se v eral le v els by Rotar y Clubs and receiv ed se v eral Awards for quality.Among his professional achievements, winning Deming Award was most note worthy. In 2020, SBL donated to endo w ‘K.Mahesh Institute Chair’ at IIT in memory of Mahesh. As an admirer of nature, he planted 20,000 trees in his i n d u s t r i a l l o c a t i o n s. H e s t a r t e d a T. S . K . M e m o r i a l Tr ust to assist ea ger students to pursue their dreams in education. Mahesh is survived by a loving wife and a lovely family of two daughters, a son, two grandsons and two grand- daughters. 65

METALLURGY Roll No: 1.066/60 O. P r a b h a k a r o b t a i n e d h i s B . Te c h a n d P h . D i n M e t a l l u r g y from IIT Madras, and M.E. in Mechanical Engineering from IISc, Bangalore, and, trained in NonDestructive Te s t i n g a t B u n d e s a n s t a l t f ü r M a t e r i a l P r u e f u n g , G e r m a - ny. He taught at IIT Madras from 1965-1998, and was Head of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering during 92-95. He briefly worked at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, USA during eighties. His primary areas of research were nondestructive evaluation, metal casting and friction materials. He was instrumental in starting structured examinations in nondestructive testing within India and brought ASNT Level III qualification to India, useful to industries in India and abroad. He voluntarily retired from IITM in 1998, and taught at the Nanyang Te c h n o l o g i c a l U n i v e rs i t y, S i n g a p o r e f r o m 1 9 9 8 t o 2 0 0 4 . He currently owns a company that provides industrial consultancy services and educational solutions in the areas of non-destr uctiv e e valuation and metallur g y. Prof.Prabhakar received the well-known, Binani gold medal (1985), ‘National Metallurgist’ award (1984), ‘NDT - man of the year’ award (1984), ‘MRSI Medal’ (1992), and Lifetime achievement award in NDT (2015). His wife, Chitra, is a post g raduate in Sociolog y, and, their daughter Shobha, a Ph.D. in Mathematics, and son, Prasad, a doctorate in Biomedical engineering. 67
