I can still remember now how beautiful he was to ride God knows how many years later! In 2011 I judged hunters at HOYS alongside Sue Rawding – what she doesn’t know about hunters isn’t worth knowing – and we were presented with some of the highest quality animals we could have wished for. The middleweight, Oathill Take the Biscuit, won the hunter championship and that, again, was a beautiful horse to ride. But it was the occasion that made it so memorable – having such a knowledgeable co- judge was invaluable and it was a year of brilliantly talented young riders! As I recall, it was Danielle Heath’s first HOYS win, while Pearl Underwood’s Loch Royal won the lightweights with Leon King and Oliver Hood won the heavyweights on Act Flyn Lad. It made the day very special and memorable for me, and hopefully for those that won as well. 18 showingworldonline.co.uk
FEATURE SW The pony that’s stood out Showing is something I’m so grateful I could pass on to my daughters. They both competed through the levels and rode at the big championships on their ponies. Alice had a very successful plaited coloured pony, Caris Lhee Shodown, and their highlight was coming second at HOYS. However, the horse that’s stood out the most for our family is Millfields Sportsman. He was Lucy’s Connemara and he won virtually everything available to him. He was with us for 20 years, won the Royal Show three years running and the international a couple of times – and went to HOYS eight times!
