Preface It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to this issue of „SANRACHNA‟ the annual newsletter of the Civil Engineering Department at Institute of Technology, Nirma University. This publication is dedicated to keeping you informed about the latest news, events, and achievements of our department, as well as providing insights into the fascinating world of civil engineering. Through „Sanrachna‟ we aim to share updates on the latest research and academic developments in the field of civil engineering, as well as profiles of our faculty and students along with their achievements during the academic year. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the diverse range of projects undertaken by our department, from sustainable buildings to developing innovative solutions for societal issues being faced by modern engineers. Laboratories- New Addition  Water Resources Engineering Lab Water Resources Engineering laboratory is the new addition to the Civil Engineering Department. The main aim of the lab is to impart technical knowledge by using practicals related to Water Resources Engineering which will improve the fundamental understanding of hydrologic systems and processes, design and analysis of water resources structures. Water Resources Engineering laboratory facilitates students for measurement of rainfall, infiltration, discharge in river or canal, evaporation etc. Major Equipment available in the laboratory: Rainfall Runoff simulator, Non-Recording Raingauge, Tipping bucket rain gauge, Pan Evaporimeter, Double Ring Infiltrometer, Soil Tensiometer, Water level indicator, current meter for velocity measurement. 4

Faculty Achievements 1. At 26th ISTE Gujarat State Annual Faculty Convention 2022 and Conference on \"Global Exigencies for Smart & Sustainable Technologies\" organized by ISTE and Indus Institute of Technology & Engineering, Ahmedabad on April 27, 2023. The paper authored by Sonal Thakkar, Abhishek Chanda and Shivanjali Rawat, titled \" Use of Industrial Waste-Calcium Carbide Residue in activating one part Sodium hydroxide in geopolymer paste\", has secured 2nd best paper award. 2. Dr. Nitesh Gupta, Assistant Professor, CED, IT-NU won the first position in badminton doubles tournament during inter-institute sports competition. He was also the runner up in badminton singles category. 5

3. Faculty members of Civil Engineering Department, Nirma University attended and presented their research work in the prestigious 17th Symposium on Earthquake Engineering (17 SEE) at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. 4. Prof. Hemang Dalwadi presented a research paper at the International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure: Innovations, Opportunities and Challenges-2023 (SIIOC-2023), held on April 20th & 21st, 2023, at NITK SURATHKAL. The paper, titled \"Road Material Identification and Condition Assessment Using Field Spectrometer,\" was co-authored by Dr. Parul Patel (Prof Patel) and showcases their innovative research approach in identifying the material used for road construction and assessing the condition of the road using a field spectrometer. 6

Student Achievements 1. Jenish Patel (20MCLC10) received the Best Paper Award / Certificate for presenting a paper on \"Comparative Study of Outrigger and Wall-Frame Structural Systems in Steel-Concrete Composite Tall Buildings\" during the International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Infrastructure, organized at PDEU, Gandhinagar, from August 23-25, 2022. 2. IIT Bombay organized AAKAR-Annual Civil Engineering Technical Festival for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Civil Engineering. Studentsfrom the Civil Engineering Department, ITNU participated in CONQUER – IT technical event of IIT Bombay. Conquer-IT was a competition to test participants' ability to design and cast pervious concrete with high compressive and flexural strength. The event had 3 rounds of competition. The program was organized on 18th March 2023 at IIT Bombay. The top 19 teams were selected for the final round. The final round team of Shivam Akbari (21MCLC01), Jeet Machhoya (21BCL065), and Om Mehta (21BCL070) finished second runners up. 3. CEPT organized one day workshop on “Google Earth Engine and its applications in remote sensing” on 18th March 2023. Three students of 8th semester, Krisee Patel (19BCL082), Rinali Patel (19BCL090), and Nirali Chaudhari (19BCL014) attended the workshop. 7

4. Two research groups of B.Tech. 8th Sem Civil Engineering Department, Nirma University students has presented their research work at an international conference, “Sustainable Infrastructure: Innovations, Opportunities and Challenges” organised by National Institute of Technology Karnataka on 20th & 21st April 2023 (SIIOC-2023), at NITK Surathkal, Mangalore. 8

 A site \"construction of the Raft foundation for the one of its kind skyscraper - REVA - residential building\" in the GIFT City, Gandhinagar is visited by the faculty of Civil Engineering Department, Nirma University on the last day of the Year 2022. 36

 A site visit to Dharoi dam was organized with the aim of providing the students of 6th semester of B.Tech Civil Engineering with an opportunity to understand the practical aspects of dam construction, operation, management and maintenance. 37

 Technical Site Visit at Kotarpur Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Pirana Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).  On 5th November, 2022 the undergraduate students of Civil Engineering Department, Nirma University visited the Kotarpur Water Treatment Plant and Pirana Sewage Treatment Plant as a part of their course work of Environmental Engineering. 38

New Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs)  Civil Engineering Department, Nirma University extended its successful collaboration with Dr. Fixit Institute Of Structural Protection & Rehabilitation (DFI-SPR) for more than one decade through renewal of the MoU on 17/02/2023. The said MoU is executed for undertaking knowledge and skill upgradation as well as information dissemination programmes in the field of Waterproofing, Maintenance and Repair of Concrete Structures, for the benefit of construction professionals, consultants, architects, academicians and students. 39

Extra-Curricular Events / Celebrations 1. The orientation Programme for newly admitted students of M. Tech programs was organized between August 01, 2022, to August 12, 2022. During the orientation programme, various lectures on Construction Technology, Introduction to Latex, Human Resource Management, Personality Development etc. have been planned. Laboratory hands-on sessions on various software in Project Management, GIS, Revit, and Construction workshop have been organized. During the orientation programme, a technical site visit to Science City & Metro Construction of Gandhinagar Ahmedabad Route has been planned for the students on August 10, 2022. 2. B. Tech. First Year Orientation Programme, Know Your Department/HOD/Student Association Session was organized on September 19, 2022. The Head of Department welcomed and addressed the students and introduced the scope of Civil Engineering. Senior faculty members of the department also addressed the students. Activity of introduction of faculty members was also carried out and information of various student associations/chapters was given to the students. 3. The Civil Engineering Department organized a farewell function for the graduating students of B.Tech (Civil Engineering) 2019-2023 batch on May 24, 2023 at A-101 from 04 PM onwards. The Organization of Civil Engineering Students (OrCES) club has organized a farewell function for student club members of OrCES graduating in May 2023. The farewell function was organized on May 24, 2023 at Maruti Nandan Garden Restaurant from 7:00 pm onwards. The faculty members have motivated students for their future endeavors. The students have also shared their experiences. 4. Seminar and visit to the civil engineering department along with other departments was 40

organized for B Tech aspirants and their parents on May 14,2023. 5. The OrCES club, Civil Engineering Department had organized a celebration for Teachers Day on September 05, 2022. All the students and faculty from the civil department enthusiastically participated in different activities such as dance, drama, singing etc. Students showcase their talent with dedicated performances for their teachers. The event ended with a beautiful garba performance by board members of the OrCES club. 6. On account of 28th Foundation Day Celebration on October 03, 2022 of the Institute of Technology, Organization of Civil Engineering Students (OrCES), Civil Engineering Department and NSS Unit SOE in association with Blind People‟s Association, Vastrapur had organized Diyang Talent Performance and Tribute. Shri Bhupendra Tripathi (Manager, Reserve Bank of India, Ahmedabad) was invited as chief guest. Also invited children from Miroli village to be a part of the celebration. A series of performances of dancing, singing, etc. were organized. After all performances and speech, all students were taken to K Canteen for Lunch. Then small gifts were provided to them and then they were sent back through bus service. 41

Student Club Activities 1. Department of Civil Engineering, Institute of Technology, Nirma University under the Indian Concrete Institute Student Chapter organized an event on August 10, 2022 on “Emerging Trends 3D Printing Technology”, by Mr. Yogi Gandhi, CEO, US Institute of 3D Printing Technology. 2. IEI Students‟ Chapter, Civil Engineering Department, Institute of Technology, Nirma University had organized a knowledge sharing session on “Basics of AUTOCAD” on September, 02 2022 at 04:15 p.m. through OFFLINE mode. The session was conducted by Mr. Shivam Akbari (21mclc01), a student of M. Tech. (CASAD) final year, Civil Engineering Department, IT-NU. A total of 36 participants including UG and PG students of the department attended the knowledge-sharing session. 3. IEI Students‟ Chapter, Civil Engineering Department, Institute of Technology, Nirma University had organized a technical lecture on “Entrepreneurship in Civil Engineering &Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) Technology”. The lecture was conducted by Ms. Silky Agrawal, Founder, Geocarte Radar Technology Pvt. Ltd., Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) on September 06, 2022, Institute of Technology, Nirma University. A total of 168 participants including UG students and faculty members of the department attended the lecture. 4. “OrCES Sports Fest”– the event which provided the stage for all the students of civil engineering to showcase their talent in physical activities. A cricket match between faculty and students was also organized on September 09, 2022. There was a good number of participants and all the players played with great sportsmanship and showed absolute Energy and spirit throughout the event. 5. IEI Students‟ Chapter, Civil Engineering Department, Institute of Technology, Nirma University has organized a knowledge sharing session on “Analysis & Design of Steel Structures using STAAD Pro” on 09th September, 2022 at 04:15 p.m. through OFFLINE mode. 6. National Concrete Quizathon was organised by the Indian Concrete Institute, Students Chapter, Civil Engineering Department. It was a three round competition, whose first and second round was held on September 15, 2022 and the final round on September 16, 2022. The first round was the eliminator, the second round was the qualifier and the final round was the rapid fire round. The competition witnessed participants from various colleges across the 42

country. 7. IGBC student chapter organized an expert lecture under the umbrella of world green building week on Engineers Day, on “Building and Sustainability” was organized on September 15, 2022. Mr. Varun Yadav, Proprietor, Integrated Consulting Engineering Services, Ahmedabad delivered the lecture. 8. Students Research Cell, Civil Engineering Department organized a lecture on Standard: Making and Utilization under the “Education Utilization Programme”, on 08 September, 2022. Mr. Sai Kaushik Kalle, Scientist -'C'/Deputy Director, Bureau of Indian, Standards, Ahmedabad Branch Office-I, delivered the session. 9. Organization of Civil Engineering Students (OrCES), Civil Engineering Department, IT-NU had organized its annual tech-fest “NIRMAN’22” on November 11 & 12, 2022 under the theme “Innovation and Engineering”. NIRMAN‟22 was consisting of various technical and non- technical events, workshops, talk shows and Fire Safety Mock Drill. The event was inaugurated by our chief guest Mr S. Mohan Babu. He is Digital head, Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project at L&T Ltd.More than 700 students from various colleges and from the institute participated in the Nirman 2022. A fire safety Mock Drill was also conducted with the support of Officers of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services and Fire and Security Association of India (FSAI), student chapter. Participants were encouraged with certificates and exciting prizes. 10. IGBC student chapter organized an expert lecture on “Case study on Effective Plumbing System” on February 13, 2023. Ms. Megha Bhatt, Principal Associates –Electra Techno Consultant, & Associates – MEPF, Consultant, Ahmedabad (Alumni Member) delivered the lecture. 11. IEI Students‟ Chapter, Civil Engineering Department, Institute of Technology, Nirma University has organized a half-day workshop on \"Pre-construction Planning of Real Estate Project\" on 04th March 2023. The sessions during workshop was conducted by three expert speakers (i) Mr. Dharan Patel, Director, Ozone India Ltd., Ahmedabad (ii) Ms. Maitree Patel, Director, Ozone India Ltd., Ahmedabad and (iii) Mr. Nihar Desai, Engineer, Hi-Tech Projects Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad. A total of 19 UG students have participated in the workshop. 12. Indian ConcreteInstituteStudents Chapter, Civil Engineering Department has organized ICI Concrete Masters 2023, a state level competition on Concrete technology on March 15 & 16, 2023.The event revolves around technical knowledge, the questions posed demand an insight on 43

the core subjects of Civil Engineering. The event was held in three rounds. The event was open for all civil engineering students across gujarat. More than 200 students were registered for the said event. Community Outreach Activities 1. OrCES, in association with NSS Unit, organized Road Safety Awareness Programme on April 13, 2023. During the event, a session on Road Safety Awareness by Mr Amit Khatri, a member of the executive committee at Gujarat Road Safety Authority and winner of the National Award on 'Indian Road Safety Mission 2015'. After the session, an online quiz on the Road Safety aspect has been arranged. Various events to check the traffic sense of drivers had been organized on the Dome Ground. 44

2. To raise awareness about the significance of water quality, Civil Engineering Department along with OrCES&NSS organized a Water Quality Awareness Drive on April 13, 2023. The event was aimed at educating college students about the importance of water quality and its impact on human health. The Water Quality Awareness Drive was a significant step towards creating awareness about water quality and its importance. The event created an opportunity for students to learn about the various factors that affect water quality and how it impacts human health. 45
