KHRS Client Advisory Council MembersLaird Smithson joined Kindred in April 2014 as Division Vice President of Finance and Regional CFO for Kindredat Home. He currently serves as Chief Operating Officer for Kindred Hospital Rehabilitation Services where heleads the hospital rehabilitation services business, including acute rehabilitation units, outpatient clinics, contracttherapy in medical surgery units and long-term acute hospital therapy. Prior to joining Kindred, Laird served asVice President of Finance for Gentiva Health Services. He has held a variety of roles in finance, operations andstrategic planning with United Health Group, AIM Healthcare, Emdeon (formerly WebMD), Nissan North Americaand Ford Motor Credit Company. He currently serves on the UDSmr Executive Advisory Committee. He has servedon the Board of Directors for the Nashville Adult Literacy Council and the Middle Tennessee chapter of the JuvenileDiabetes Research Foundation. Laird earned his bachelors in business administration from the University ofGeorgia and MBA from Belmont University. KHRS Client Advisory Council Co-Chair Laird SmithsonMary Van de Kamp, MS/CCC-SLP, is the Chief Clinical Officer for Kindred Rehabilitation Services (KRS). Her Mary Van de Kampresponsibilities include overseeing quality initiatives and measurement across all aspects and business lines of therehabilitation division of Kindred Healthcare. Ms. Van de Kamp has served in leadership positions with Kindredsince 1995, in both clinical and operational capacities, with the primary focus of attaining clinical excellence.Formerly the Senior Vice President of Quality for KRS for four years, she excelled in providing innovative clinicalleadership to internal and external customers, and helped assess, monitor, and improve quality and clinical goalsand outcomes. She also established process oversight and reporting in collaboration with compliance and legaldepartments. She has served as a technical expert for many organizations, including the American Health CareAssociation, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the National Association for the Supportof Long Term Care, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, supporting appropriate quality andreimbursement in post-acute rehabilitation services. Prior to joining Kindred, Ms. Van de Kamp provided Speech-Language Pathology services across the spectrum of care in all rehabilitation settings. Jody AbbottJohn G. Anderson, FACHE, serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Anderson Regional Health System.Anderson joined the organization in 1990 and has since served as Vice President, Vice President of Operations,Vice President and Administrator of Anderson Regional Medical Center- South, and Interim CEO. He was namedPresident and Chief Executive Officer in April 2015.Anderson received a Bachelor’s Degree from University of Mississippi and a Master’s Degree in HealthAdministration from University of Alabama at Birmingham. KHRS Client Advisory Council Members Rene J. Areaux, F.A.C.H.E., is Vice President/ Chief Operating Officer at Springhill Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. For more than a decade, Mr. Areaux has been responsible for multiple clinical and administrative departments in healthcare settings. He has extensive experience facilitating strong professional relations with physicians and patients, particularly pre and post-Hurricane Katrina’s trail of destruction in Louisiana. In addition, he maintains high standards for meeting technical healthcare compliance issues, as well as improving productivity efficiencies through the implementation of new technology and improved contracts. Mr. Areaux’s affiliations include American College of Healthcare Executives and Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, of which he is past president. He is also a Registered Respiratory Therapist with the National Board of Respiratory Care.Rene J. AreauxCraig Bolda Craig Bolda has worked in Northwest Indiana with Community Healthcare System (CHS) for almost 30 years.Sheila Brown Mr. Bolda began his career as a staff physical therapist at Community Hospital and later served as CHS Regional Director of Rehabilitation and Therapy Services for more than a decade. He has experience implementing new healthcare delivery systems in detailed and complex regulatory environments. Mr. Bolda also has experience in leading work teams, managing operating budgets, and overseeing facility operations. He served as Chief Operating Officer at CHS St. Catherine Hospital from 2010 to 2017. Currently, he is addressing the healthcare needs of Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland as Vice President of Acute Rehabilitation Services for Community Healthcare System. He holds a Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Finch University of Health Sciences at the Chicago Medical School and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Indiana University. Mr. Bolda is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Indiana Hospital Association. In her role as Chief Operations Officer, Sheila is responsible for all operational aspects of Palomar Health, which includes 395 licensed acute care hospital beds and a 129-bed skilled nursing facility, as well as Ambulatory Services. She led the Service Excellence initiative, resulting in a movement from 11th percentile ranking to the 81st percentile ranking in Patient Satisfaction nationally (Press Ganey measurement), throughout a three-year period. In addition, she led the Palomar Health team in obtaining the Community-Based Care Transitions Program (CCTP) with CMS, Scripps, Sharp, and UCSD hospitals, and the San Diego County Aging and Independent Services, the largest project to date funded by CMS. Recently, she established the Behavioral Health Hospitalist program and secured the Palomar Health/Kindred partnership to establish a rehabilitation hospital. She is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives and served as a Board Member- At-Large for San Diego Organization of Healthcare Leaders. Sheila is a past Chair (2009) for the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce and more recently (2018) the Chair of North County Health Services. She has been a member of California Hospital Association, Post-Acute Care Services Board and currently serves on the California State San Marcos University Community Council. Wendy Harrington leads the Hannibal Regional Foundation and also serves as Vice-President Development for Hannibal Regional. As President of the Foundation, Dr. Harrington manages all fundraising and grant writing for Hannibal Regional. As Vice-President Development, Wendy leads the areas of Marketing, Business Development, Volunteer and Guest Services, and Pastoral Care. In addition to these roles, Harrington serves as liaison to Orthopedic providers at Hannibal Regional, and offers leadership to the Hannibal Regional Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. Previous to her role with the Foundation, Wendy led a Business Research Group for the University of Missouri, and was the Director of Marketing for a national equine pharmaceutical company. Dr. Harrington holds a Bachelor of Science degree from William Woods University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Doctoral in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Missouri-Columbia. KHRS Client Advisory Council MembersSteve Hyde, Chief Executive Officer at Paris Regional Medical Center, has spent more than 30 years in the health-care field. He began his career as a physical therapist at various hospitals including Baylor and Dallas Presbyterianin the Dallas area. He transitioned into healthcare leadership at Medical City Dallas Hospital in Dallas in 2001. Priorto joining Southwestern Medical Center Steve served as Chief Operating Officer for hospitals in Las Cruces, NewMexico and McAllen, Texas. A lifelong learner, Steve received his Masters of Business Administration from the Uni-versity of Texas at Dallas, a Masters of Theology from Dallas Theology Seminary, a Bachelor’s of Science, PhysicalTherapy from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor’s of Science, Biology from Emporia State University. Steve HydeBryan Jackson has 25 years of experience in healthcare finance. He began as an auditor for a regional CPA firmand then progressed through financial management positions at for-profit and non-profit hospitals in rural andsmall urban settings. Having previously served as Accounting Manager and Controller, Bryan returned to JeffersonRegional Medical Center in March 2011 as CFO. A long-time member of the Healthcare Financial ManagementAssociation, Bryan earned Fellow status in 2009 and is a past president of the Arkansas Chapter. He is a CertifiedPublic Accountant and Certified Management Accountant, with a BBA degree in Accounting from HardingUniversity and an MBA from The University of Alabama. Bryan is a past board member of Fifty for the Future ofPine Bluff. He currently serves on the board of the Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation and is president of theboard of the Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson County. Bryan JacksonGenny has been leading and working in healthcare for over 35 years in a variety of settings including clinical andoperational roles. Maroc joined CoxHealth in May 2011 as the President of Cox Monett Hospital, and in 2013, herresponsibilities expanded to include system-wide responsibilities. Her experience includes being CEO of a criticalaccess hospital. Maroc has experience in medical staff credentialing & affairs, quality management, performanceimprovement, utilization management and regulatory compliance. Genny has a passion for providing qualityhealthcare and service to the community. She has an associate degree in psychology and a Bachelor of Sciencein Nursing from Grandview University in Des Moines, Iowa. Her Master of Healthcare Administration is from DesMoines University. Maroc is a Fellow in the ACHE and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality.Kimberly Nagy, R.N., M.S.N., NEA-BC, is the Chief Nursing Officer and Executive Vice President, Patient Care Genny MarocServices, at NCH. Her responsibilities include inpatient care units, Emergency Services, System of Care – Care Kim NagyCoordination, Surgical Services – hospital and surgery center, Service Lines, Quality & Safety, Patient Experience,and Professional Practice. Nagy is a board-certified advanced nurse executive.Prior to 2013, Nagy was vice president of operations and chief nurse executive at Northwestern Lake ForestHospital, where she led patient care delivery, including inpatient care units, surgical services, emergency servicesand women’s & children’s.Nagy led the organization’s efforts to achieve Magnet recognition from the American NursesCredentialing Center for nursing excellence.Nagy graduated from Purdue University with Master of Science and Bachelor of Sciencedegrees in nursing. Her professional memberships include the American Organization of NurseExecutives, American College of Healthcare Executives, American Nurses Association and SigmaTheta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
KHRS Client Advisory Council Members Steven Sisto, Senior Vice President/ Chief Operating Officer at Methodist Hospital. Mr. Sisto is responsible for the hospital’s campus and facilities development, capital budget, hospital operations, service excellence, strategic planning, program development, clinical laboratory, respiratory therapy, physical medicine and rehabilitation services, radiology and imaging services, radiation oncology, environmental services and nutritional services.Steve Sisto Shannon Sullivan, MSW, LICSW, CCM has served multiple clinical and leadership roles within the Care New England Health system and it’s various hospitals over the past 15 years. Clinically trained as a perinatal clinical social worker, Shannon served multiple Director roles within Women and Infants Hospital of of Rhode Island until 2016, when she was promoted to the System Director of Care Management, overseeing all clinical social work, care management, discharge planning, transition planning and rehab contract services with Kindred across the health system. In 2017, she was promoted to Chief Access officer, overseeing the access efforts across all areas of the health system. In May 2018, she took over her current role, Interim Chief Operating Officer at Kent County Hospital, a licensed 359 bed community medical surgical hospital.Shannon SullivanGustavo Valdespino Gustavo Valdespino was appointed President & Chief Executive Officer in September 2009. Mr. Valdespino is a seasoned leader with over 30 years of hospital management experience. Prior to joining Valley Presbyterian Hospital, he served as Senior Vice President of Operations for Tenet Health Corporation’s Southern California region. He also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Vincent Medical Center and as CEO of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Orange County. Mr. Valdespino has received the “Up and Comer” award from Modern Health Magazine, the National Medical Enterprises “Circle of Excellence” award, the Tenet Healthcare Corporation “Circle of Excellence” award, and the “Leading Hispanic Executive” award from Hispanic Business Magazine. Mr. Valdespino holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of New York at Stony Brook, a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed the advanced management program at the Harvard Business School in Boston.David Zechman David M. Zechman, FACHE, joined McLaren Northern Michigan in November 2013. His 37 years of health care and leadership experience combined a proven track record in hospital and health system executive management with a passion for quality and service excellence. Prior to joining McLaren Northern Michigan, Zechman served as President and CEO of Ozarks Medical Center (OMC) in West Plains, Missouri beginning in 2008. Formerly, he served as the President and CEO of the recently renamed Lakeside Medical Center, the sole county hospital in Palm Beach County, Florida. In addition, he has held senior management positions at Jewish Hospital and St.Mary’s HealthCare in Louisville, Kentucky, and at St. Luke’s Health System in Kansas City, Missouri. Through these past roles, he was successful leading a health system offering a full continuum of care, and perhaps more importantly, has a thorough understanding of the challenges facing health care delivery in both the urban market an rural environment. Zechman is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and served the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) as president of the Southwest District, member of the Finance Committee, and secretary of the Management Services Corporation Board. He has an undergraduate degree in Education from Miami University and a Masters of Public Administration from Cleveland State University.
Membership CharterKHRS Client Advisory CouncilPurposeThe KHRS Client Advisory Council serves to provide the opportunity for industry thoughtleaders to interact with each other and with Kindred leadership as they share the latesttrends, technology advancements and many forces that affect the industry. In additionto learning how Kindred is approaching these trends, the collective voice of the councilwill help shape Kindred services and future direction; ultimately for the success of ouracute care hospital clients.MembershipThe Client Advisory Council will consist of approximately 15 voluntary members that arepioneers in the acute care sector. KHRS client members represent all types of acutefacilities from across the nation. Each member is requested to serve on the council for atwo-year term.MeetingsThe Client Advisory Council will meet two times per year. At least one meeting eachyear will be scheduled to include both a dinner and conference session and onemeeting may be conducted via a web-based video call lasting approximately four hours.Goals1. Gather feedback on what KHRS clients value most in our partnership2. Determine how KHRS can best help you achieve your goals today and in the future3.
