Halloween Fun Show - Hosted by NEW Miniature Horse Club The members of NEW Miniature Horse Club have had a busy and fun-filled year. We finished out the year with our annual Halloween Fun Show. The arena was perfectly decorated with skeletons, pumpkins, cats, witches, and headstones to bring out the spirit of Halloween. Participants ranged from tiny tot to adult. The fun show included both in-hand and driving courses. Everyone had a great time and lots of laughs, minus the first snowfall of the season. Next on our list of activities is our November meeting for our elections and planning next year’s calendar of events. The final event of the year is our Awards Banquet and Silent Auction. Wishing all the members and supporters of the American Shetland Pony Club and American Miniature Horse Registry a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Liv was born Jan. 3, 2001, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Jacob Wayne Johnson and Traci Lee Mecham Johnson. She grew up and attended elementary and middle schools in Shelley and attended Idaho Falls High School. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and her strong testimony helped her in achieving her Personal Progress Medallion. Liv was an excellent student and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was heavily involved in the community, serving as an advisor for the Community Youth in Action and worked hard to earn her CNA, CPR, MedTech and first aid certifications. She had a special place in her heart for those with special needs and was involved with the Special Olympics Project Unify for many years. She loved helping others. She was excited to be able to attend a major youth leadership conference in Washington, D.C. At age 8, miniature horses came to be a part of her life. She absolutely loved being a part of the training and showing of these beautiful little animals. They allowed her to travel to many places and make countless lifelong friends. She received many awards regionally and nationally, the pinnacle of which were National Reserve Champion in 2017 and National Champion in 2016. She spent her last day working at the barn where she was the most at peace. Olivia had a zest for life like no other and made everyone she came in contact with feel special. Liv enjoyed playing softball and soccer and was a captain for the Idaho Falls High School soccer team. She loved horseback riding, hunting, campfires, ice cream, kayaking, hiking, traveling, shopping, wake and knee boarding, swimming, watching movies, working with the youth, being with her friends and any adventures with her dad. She loved to laugh and have fun and had the biggest, most beautiful smile that she shared with everyone. when working with larger equine. When she finally decided to try driving, 71 she was hooked! Because she loves her horses so much, she can often be found sharing this love with others. In particular, Jan often invites non-horse friends to her farm. Many have remarked how they were elbow deep in horse activities and showing before they knew what was going on. Over the years, Jan can be credited with giving 50+ people their start in miniature horses. Jan has been instrumental in raising the bar for AMHR country and pleasure horses; over the past several decades she has been breeding and seeking out young driving prospects that meet her quality standards. Through Jan’s expertise in breeding and spotting raw talent, Jan can often be found driving down “victory lane” at nationals with champions and reserve champion neck ribbons. Jan was visibly overcome with emotions during the memorial for Madison Moore at the 2018 AMHR Nationals show. Madison’s family shared with Jan the story of Madison’s success with a Whispering Pines bred horse at the 2016 Nationals. The story became even more moving when another youth won the class and memorial award with another Whispering Pines bred horse. The 2018 national show was a special occasion for Jan because it held many “first experiences” for her. This was the first Nationals where Tegan and Preston Showers, her grandchildren, attended, and it was Tegan’s first time showing there. Jan told everyone she talked to that it was a “bucket list” item to have her grandkids at Nationals and showing. She was even more overjoyed when her granddaughter, Tegan, won reserve champion in Youth Showmanship, Mare/Gelding, Ages 7 & Under – 34” & Under, as well as the Youth Sportsmanship Award 12 & Under. Along with several champion and reserve champion awards at the 2018 Nationals, Jan was awarded the AMHR National Amateur Reserve High Point - Driving Over award, as well as the Leonard Davenport Memorial Sportsmanship award. She was very humbled with the recognition and will brush off the success to credit those around her. Jan is most proud to see the love of AMHR horses growing in her grandchildren and will continue to demonstrate the true spirit of a champion as she fosters this love with her family and those around her. Committee Updates NATIONAL AREA SHOW COMMITTEE STEWARDS COMMITTEE Submitted by Donna Phillips, Committee Co-Chair Submitted by Rob Crater, Committee Chair Hello, Everyone! Feeding Horses: Meals Per Day October 18, 2018 By Kentucky Equine Research Staff A horse’s gastrointestinal tract functions optimally when it is processing forages. Slow, steady consumption of pasture, hay, or other forage sources has several advantages, including keeping the stomach filled to prevent ulcer formation and nourishing the microorganisms of the hindgut. Energy requirements often dictate that additional calorie sources, typically concentrates, be fed to sustain growth or performance. How often should concentrates be fed for optimal health? “The amount of feed needed to fuel growth or work is the primary factor in determining how many meals a horse should be fed daily,” said Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., a nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research. “While forage should be available to horses at all times, or nearly so, concentrates are best offered as small meals, usually no more than 5 lbs (2.3 kg) at a time for mature horses.” Why cap the amount of grain in a meal? “It’s a matter of stomach size and rate of digestion,” said White- house. “Most horses would be pleased to have several huge grain meals a day, but the gastrointestinal tract can only manage so much at one time, both physically and physiologically.” Because starch is the primary energy source in many feeds, it must spend adequate time in the small intestine to be digested properly. If pushed through the small intestine too rapidly, the starch enters the hindgut incom- pletely digested. “Starch overload of the hindgut can be problematic, as it causes a drop in pH which, in turn, can be harmful to the beneficial microorganisms that help ferment forage. Any roadblock in forage fermenta- tion can interfere with energy production.” If you’re feeding about 5 lb (2.3 kg) of feed a day to horse, then he can be safely fed in one meal. Most for- tified concentrates are formulated to be fed at a level of intake between 6 and 13 lb (3 and 6 kg) per day, so multiple meals are needed. For horses that consume more than 10 lb (4.5 kg) of concentrate per day, it is best to offer it in three meals spread evenly throughout the day. Even when fed three meals a day, some horses are sensitive to starch moving into the hindgut. Disruptions in the pH balance can be prevented through the use of a hindgut buffer, such as EquiShure. “EquiShure was specifically engineered to help horses with hindgut acidosis,” said Whitehouse. “The product contains a protective layer that keeps the buffer from being released until it hits the hindgut. With its time-release mecha- nism, EquiShure has been a game-changer when it comes to hindgut health.” Is your horse’s gastrointestinal health up to snuff? Consult with a Kentucky Equine Research nutrition advisor to make sure your horse is getting the most from its diet. The Journal • December 2018 / January 2019 83
