College Readiness: Mapping the gaps Aksha is an all-rounder and achieving excellence for her is piece of cake but she is not yet sure of what college and course is best for her. On the other hand, Sushant has struggled in his academics all through his school life. He is clear that he wants to be an entrepreneur but is unaware of what career path will lead to it. There could be similar situations arising in the everyday school scenario for high school students as the curriculum rarely deals with college readiness. Transition from school to college is not an easy route for all and the disjointed curriculum of schools and colleges makes it more difficult for our youth. While college readiness programs are quite prevalent abroad, India is yet to start its journey from scratch. Let's see how one can identify the gaps and work on it to ensure a smooth transition:  Academic Readiness: This component mainly includes understanding the college requirements for any specific course and how the subject studied in high schools relates to it. For instance, a student aspiring to pursue a degree in forensic science needs to be academically strong at chemistry and biology apart from the other surplus requirements. Similarly every course has their own subject specific necessities but the high school students are hardly aware of this fact and the curriculum also does not provide any information. There is a huge gap between what high schools teach and what colleges expect because the two segments do not develop expectations jointly. Further thwarting the situation is the diffused nature of readiness standards within college and university systems. Thus, the academic readiness is left to the educators or the career advisors to mind the gaps.  Cognitive Readiness: The term cognitive readiness encompasses intelligent behavior that lead to the expansion of cognitive strategies and proficiencies necessary for college-level work. Intellectual openness, inquisitiveness, self- management, communication, teamwork and collaboration, critical thinking etc are few of the essential factors that contribute to the cognitive readiness. While some schools are catering to these needs of the high school students, the major challenge remains aligning them to the college requirements. The degrees become redundant before one completes them and joins the world of work; what keeps you in demand are the cognitive skills.

 Financial Readiness: Each one of us at some point of time must have aspired to join the most reputed colleges and universities in our school days especially the dream to study abroad. In the absence of proper guidance and advisor, we all have paved our own path purely by trial and error. Nevertheless now it seems to be a pure waste of human potential. Students or schools need to be realistic in identifying career goals and hence the need of financial preparedness is of utmost importance. There is no well-defined program to address this issue in schools. The process followed in managing finances is parent dependent as students have never explored the college, courses or finances involved. Moreover, they lack in taking the advantages of various scholarships available to them. Training them on finance analysis and management will definitely add to their portfolio. If this sets your mind thinking about the requirement of a well-defined college readiness programme for your child, write to us at [email protected]. Let's #Connect #Collaborate and #Create.
