Mayors’ Welcome Mayor Douglas (North Cowichan) and Mayor Staples (Duncan) Welcome to the beautiful City of Duncan and Municipality of North Cowichan for the Vancouver Island 4A Boys’ Basketball Championships. The Cowichan region has a long history of notable basketball players and we are thrilled to host this tournament at Cowichan Secondary, home of the Cowichan Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds team has worked hard to represent our region and Rob Douglas we are proud to have them on the court. From top- Michelle Staples notch sports facilities to fantastic accommodation and delicious food options, Cowichan is the perfect destination for this tournament. Make sure to take some time to explore our area and maybe even discover our notable basketball players of the past at the Sports Wall of Fame at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre. We wish all teams the best of luck and a memorable tournament experience. Good luck to all the teams, and go Cowichan Thunderbirds! Principal’s Hoff Welcome We are honoured to host such a prestigious tournament and are proud to showcase the talents of the best senior boys basketball teams from across Vancouver Island. Our school and community are passionate about basketball and we are excited to see the high level of skill and sportsmanship that will be on display. I would like to extend a special thank you to the tournament committee for their hard work and dedication in organizing this event. Their efforts have ensured that everything is in place for a successful tournament. I would also like to extend a thank you to all our sponsors who have made this tournament possible. Without their support, we would not be able to host such an event and provide this opportunity for these young athletes to showcase their talents. 4A History at a Glance 2022 - Oak Bay continues their domination with their 7th consecutive Island Championship, and record setting 26th overall, with a 78-69 win over Claremont. The Bays were led by MVP Griffin Arnatt. Belmont's Mike Adarkwa-Nti garnered the honours as Best Defensive Player. Oak Bay and Claremont would see each other in the BC's where Oak Bay won to place 9th in BC. 2021 - NO EVENT (COVID) 2020 - Oak Bay sets a record with their sixth straight Island Championship and 25th overall. The Bays upset tournament favourite Claremont, that had been the #1 ranked 4A team on the Island since the start of the season, 73-69. Lucas Maffia follows up his brother's back-to- back Island MVP's with one of his own. The Maffia brothers are only the 2nd set of brothers to win back-to-back MVP's behind Steve ('92) and Martin ('93) Nash. Oak Bay's Ethan Moore earns the Best Defensive Player award. Nanaimo upset Belmont, 83-75, for 3rd but failed, 90-57, in the BC Challenge game against Claremont 2019 - Oak Bay adds another Island title making it 5 in a row and their 24th overall with a 91-72 win over Belmont. Diego Maffia drops 53 in the final enroute to back-to-back MVP awards. Belmont's Danny Song earns the honour of the Best Defensive Award. Claremont finished 3rd over Dover Bay but then fell short by 1-point, 62-61, to Belmont in the Diego Maffia Challenge game for the 2nd BC berth. Oak Bay 2018 - Oak Bay extends their record to 23 Island titles, and current streak of four in a row, with a comfortable 105-56 win over Belmont. Oak Bay was led by junior guard and Island MVP Diego Maffia. Oak Bay's Luis Guerra earned the honour of Best Defensive Player. Cowichan finished 3rd over Dover Bay and then challenged Belmont for the 2nd Island berth but fell short with an 86-54 Belmont victory. Belmont got a favourable BC draw and went on a great run and finished 4th in BC. 2017 - Oak Bay star guard Jaden Touchie earns both the MVP and Best Defensive Player awards as his Bays dominate yet another Island title extending their own record to 22 Island Championships, and current streak of three in a row. Belmont was down big early in the first but was able to battle back in the second to make it close but Oak Bay just kept rolling and cruised to an 83-64 victory. Belmont survived the 2/3 challenge game the following Tuesday, 81-66, over 3rd place Cowichan. 2016 - Oak Bay makes it 21 Island titles as they dismantled Cowichan 89-57. Oak Bay's Madhu McConnell was named the MVP while teammate Jaden Touchie was the Best Defensive Player. Belmont survived, 68-66, host Dover Bay's efforts in the 3rd place game. 2015 - Oak Bay wins their record 20th Island title, led by Island MVP Atlas St. Paul-Butler, with the largest known margin of victory in Island final history with a 98-68 win over Dover Bay. Cowichan beat G. P. Vanier, 57-49, for 3rd and then beat Dover Bay in the challenge game for the 2nd BC berth. Oak Bay finished 6th in BC. 2014 - Claremont goes back-to-back with a 66-58 win over Cowichan in the first year of the 4A tier. Claremont was led by Island MVP and Best Defensive player Alex Jordache. Mount Douglas beat Oak Bay 69-62 to capture 3rd place. 2013 - Claremont wins their 2nd Island Championship, denying Oak Bay their 20th, with a 61-52 victory. Claremont's Mason Loewen was named the Island's MVP. Belmont finished 3rd over Cowichan (70-52) and then successfully challenged Oak Bay for the Island's 2nd BC berth, winning 71-54. 4

4A History at a Glance 2012 - Oak Bay wins their record 19th Island title as they defeated Belmont 68-60. Mount Douglas would capture 3rd with a 54-51 win over Cowichan. Mount Douglas would go on to finish 8th in BC, best of the Island teams. Belmont's Jordan Fenn becomes only the 5th player in Island history to be selected MVP that's not from the winning team. 2011 - Dover Bay wins their third title in five years. Dover Bay beat Claremont in the final 63-61 in a North 1 vs South 1 match-up. Oak Bay finished 3rd and then won a challenge game 81-75 vs Claremont for the 2nd berth into the BC's. Dover's Jason McKee earned the MVP. 2010 - Oak Bay earn their 18th Island title with an 80-72 win over Dover Bay with Oak Mason Loewen Bay's Reese Pribilsky as the MVP. Cowichan beat Stelly's 74-70 for 3rd in the Claremont 'fastest' half in recent memory. The first quarter took only 10:06 of real time (no fouls, ball went out of play once) and the first half was done in just over 28 minutes of real time. 2009 - Dover Bay, for the second time in two years, wins the Island title. The final, for the seventh straight year, goes down to the wire as Dover Bay (N2) beats league rival Cowichan (N1) 45-40 in overtime. After final game, Dover Coach Mark Simpson is heard musing, and with a smile on his face, 'we set Island basketball back 30 years with this one.' Due to a shift in berths, the Island receives only two berths to the BC's, Cowichan did not survive the challenge game and Oak Bay would get the second and final berth into the BC’s. 2008 - Belmont wins their second Island Championship coming in regarded as a dark-horse at the #6 seed. Belmont first knocked off defending BC champs Dover Bay and then took out South 1 Oak Bay. This set up thrilling final against Mount Douglas which would see Belmont score 11 straight points over the last three minutes for a 68-61 win. Cowichan beat Oak Bay for the third berth to the BC’s. 2007 - Dover Bay makes it five straight years of great finishes as Island MVP Pat McCarthy wins it with a put-back with 3 seconds on the clock for a 49-47 win over Vanier. Oak Bay finishes 3rd over Highland. Dover goes on to win BC title with a 58-57 victory over Kits and Oak Bay gets 5th in BC with a 109-83 win over Yale 2006 - Oak Bay beat Vanier 81-80 in the fourth straight final that when down to the wire. Cowichan finished 3rd and then went 6th in BC. 2005 - Oak Bay beat Claremont 60-58 in the first ever final to go to overtime. Wellington finished 3rd and went on a miracle run to finish 2nd in BC! 2004 - Mount Douglas beat host Wellington, 59-57, on an extremely deep 3-pointer at the buzzer, by Island MVP Jordan Brown. 2003 - Ballenas in their first ever AAA Islands beats host SMUS in front of a packed pro-Blue Jag crowd.Tourney MVP Evan Trickey hits a 15 footer at the buzzer to win it for the Whalers. 2002 - Claremont wins their first ever Islands beating out crosstown rival SMUS and then goes on a magical run and finishes 2nd in the BC’s. 2001 - Stelly's wins their first Islands knocking off Oak Bay in another crosstown final. 2000 - Oak Bay wins their 15th Island Championship and are led by the son of former Bay, Island and BC MVP Chris Trumpy. Chris Trumpy Jr. wins his own MVP as Oak Bay downs Wellington in the final. 5

4A History at a Glance 1999 - SMUS led once again by Danny Boticki, easily defeated Ladysmith, 91-63, to win back-to-back titles. 1998 -SMUS led by MVP Danny Boticki, defeats crosstown rival Oak Bay, 64-58. Dover Bay beats Esquimalt 75-57 to get the 3rd berth to the BC’s. 1997 - Alberni, led by MVP Nick Seredick, defeats Cowichan 84-74 for a return trip to the BC's for the 2nd year in a row. Mount Douglas beat Dover Bay 79-69 to capture the 3rd and final BC berth. 1996 - Wellington wins their 1st ever Island Championships. MVP Steve MacDonald's 26 points help defeat Stelly's 74-73 at the buzzer despite Aaron Olsen's 32-point performance. Victoria knocked off Alberni 93-75 for 3rd place. All four teams advance to the BC Championships at GM Place in Vancouver. 1995 -SMUS led by Allister Wilmott, defeats crosstown rival Mount Douglas at the buzzer in what is arguably the tournament's most dramatic final at 80-79. Ladysmith finished 3rd and then went on to win the BC Championships 1994 - Carihi, led by MVP Eric Hinrichsen, win their first Island Championship beating Ladysmith 90-76. SMUS knocks off Vanier for the 3rd and final berth to the BC's. Carihi went on to finish 3rd in BC. 1993 - SMUS led by MVP Martin Nash, beats Vanier 80-63. Esquimalt takes the 3rd BC berth with a win over Cowichan. Martin Nash sets a new benchmark for one game with 55 points against Esquimalt in the semis 1992 - SMUS, led by MVP (and future NBAer) Steve Nash, defeats Alberni 80-71. St. Michaels goes on to win the BC’s with the most dominating performance ever seen in BC high school history. Belmont Braves take the final BC berth by stopping the Nanaimo Islanders 82-72. 1991 - SMUS, led by MVP Jason Reynolds, wins their 1st Island title by defeating Belmont 56-47. Belmont goes on to finish 3rd in the BC's. Esquimalt beat Alberni 66-58 for the 3rd BC berth. 1990 - Spectrum, led by MVP Wayne Moore, captures their 2nd \"Island Crown\" with a 79-75 win over Oak Bay. Barsby of Nanaimo finished 3rd with a 63-58 win over Parkland to capture the final BC berth. 1989 - Nanaimo, led by two time MVP Brett Nohr, wins their 4th Island Steve Nash Championship. SMUS 1988 - Oak Bay wins their 14th Island Championship with a, 95-68, victory over Alberni on their home court. Alberni qualifies for its 1st trip to the BC in 24 years. Nanaimo finishes 3rd with a 79-78 victory over Spectrum. Brett Nohr of Nanaimo is named the tournament's MVP. Coach Dave Hutchings first. 1987 - Mount Douglas defeated Parkland 63-55 and were led by tourney MVP Tony Nelson. 1986 - Spectrum wins their first ever Island title. After defeating Cowichan 65-58 Spectrum easily won the final over crosstown rival Mount Douglas. Travis Annis of Cowichan broke two tournament records; most points in a game (39) and most points in a tournament (133). Oak Bay's Dimitri Gilbert ties Greg Walters of Cowichan for the most times selected tourney MVP (2). 1985 - Oak Bay, led by MVP Dimitri Gilbert, wins their 13th Island title by defeating Belmont 65-50. Vanier beats Mount Douglas 86-75 for 3rd place. 1984 - Parkland, led by MVP Kevin Ottewell and Tom Johnson win their school's 2nd Island title with a 53-46 win over Nanaimo. Cowichan clinched 3rd with a 78-69 victory over the Alberni Chieftains. 1983 - Nanaimo wins its 3rd Island Championship, when the tourney returns to UVIC's Old Gym, with a 6 61-54 victory over Mount Douglas.

4A History at a Glance 1982 - Mount Douglas, with the tourney played in Port Alberni, wins in an all South Island final between Mount Douglas & Oak Bay with the Rams winning easy 69-46. Hometown Chieftains took 3rd with a 56-52 win over North #1 Carihi. Alberni's Dave Bakken was tourney MVP. 1981 - Cowichan - For the 2nd year in a row two North Island teams did battle for the title. Cowichan, led by Greg Walters, beat Nanaimo 74-68. Walters becomes the first player to win the MVP twice. Victoria Totems got 3rd with a 68-57 win over the Belmont Braves. 1980 - Nanaimo wins and for the 1st time in the 30-year history of the \"Islands\", the South is shutout of the BC's. Nanaimo beat Courtenay in the final while Cowichan, led by MVP Greg Walters, took the 3rd BC berth. 1979 - Parkland makes the trip north and beats Nanaimo in their house. 1978 - Nanaimo, with the tourney at Malaspina College in Nanaimo, the hometown Islanders defeated Oak Bay in the Island final to spoil Don Horwood's quest for six in a row. Then, just for good measure, Nanaimo beat Oak Bay in the BC final 71-62. Greg Kazanowski was the Island MVP and his brother, future National team member Gerald Kazanowski, was named BC MVP. 1977 - Oak Bay, under Don Horwood, makes it ANOTHER five in a row. 2nd went to Spectrum who early upset a strong Nanaimo squad. 1976 - Oak Bay, led by MVP Larry Dalziel, defeated Courtenay in the final while the Belmont Braves captured the 3rd and final BC berth. 1975 - Oak Bay - Silver Anniversary! Bill Lawrie made presentations to Mrs. Bill Reid & Lawrie Wallace for their outstanding participation in Island basketball. 1974 - Oak Bay, 10-minute quarters, no 3-point play & other new rules - same winner. Bays over Mount Douglas 57-48. 1973 - Oak Bay, coached by Don Horwood, Island + BC Champs! Chris Trumpy (Sr.) gets the MVP. 1972 - Belmont, coached by Wally Russell, led by MVP Lee Edmonson. Braves go on to get 3rd in BC's. 1971 - Oak Bay wins 7th Islands, this time coached by Don Horwood. 1970 - Mount Douglas, coached by Don Puddy + led by Jim Hunter and Jim McKay, wins its 1st! 1969 - Oak Bay wins 5th straight but loses in BC final to Victoria 38-37. Oak Bay's Tom Holmes named Island & BC MVP. 1968 - Oak Bay wins the Island and then the BC's! Oak Bay's Dave Morgan named the MVP for both! 1967 - Oak Bay wins their third in a row defeating Chemainus + MVP Bill Robinson 34-29. Billy was the backbone for Canada for many years. 1966 - Oak Bay, this time led by Brian McKenzie, but lost to Victoria in the BC final. 1965 - Oak Bay, led by Bob Burrows, won the Islands and BC's, both at the Bill Robinson expense of the Alberni Chieftains. Chemainus 1964 - Victoria over Courtenay. 1963 - Alberni, Jack Gilbert's Chieftains, led by Alex Brayden, John Drew & Marvin Johnston, beats Nanaimo 66-52. 7

4A History at a Glance 1962 - Tsolum are led by Larry Lehtonen over a young Alberni team. 1961 - Oak Bay, Gary Taylor's Bays over Victoria 54-53. 1960 - Courtenay, coached by Gerry Montgomery, is sparked by Gordon Bechter in a victory over powerhouse and defending BC Champ - Victoria. 1959 - Victoria shows they are the dominate team of the 50's going on to win the first BC title for the Island. 1958 - Victoria wins their 4th Island title and goes 4th in BC. David Black 1957 - Cumberland breaks Victoria's streak, and goes on to get 2nd in BC. Vic High 1959 1956 - Victoria wins the Island and Alberni is 2nd in BC - again. 1955 - Victoria wins again but Alberni goes the farthest - 2nd in BC. 1954 - Victoria wins their 1st Islands and goes 4th in the BC’s. 1953 - Alberni, led by MVP Claude Schick who was an all-star three straight years, makes it three in a row for the Chieftains. 1952 - Alberni wins again, but Buzz Jacklin of Nanaimo gets MVP. 1951 - Alberni wins the first \"Islands\" and Twitter Hill is the first MVP.
