REVIEWS BY HAKIM IN DEPTH REVIEW THE LIGHTHOUSE A24 is an independent entertainment production company specializing in films. Notorious for movies such as Midsommar, Uncut Gems, Hereditary, The Lighthouse, and many more. This company has become a genre in itself amongst pop culture, paving the way for modern horror/thriller in the movie industry. A particular movie that piqued my interest is Robert Eggers’, The Lighthouse. Released in 2019, The Lighthouse was produced with a budget of $11 million and earned a box office of $18 million. Statistics aside, this movie is visually as well as auditory stunning. Though, the plot of the movie is incredibly vague, and it offers more questions than answers, it does not stop the movie from being impressionable to many, myself including. However, this movie deals with a lot of mature content and is rated 18+ respectfully. A disclaimer as to what to expect going into this movie: sexually implicit AND explicit content, blood/gore, and vulgar language. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson absolutely delivered; their performances were terrifyingly good. Personally, I had the intent of watching this movie for my curiosity towards Willem’s performance, which complimented my interest of A24 movies. Willem Dafoe is an extremely talented actor and the roles he plays fit perfectly. His most iconic role, Norman Osborne (The Green Goblin) in the Spiderman trilogy, gave the world a peek at his potential, and Dafoe a window for opportunities. Alongside Dafoe was Robert Pattinson, otherwise known as the hunky vampire from that sappy love movie (I wouldn’t know I don’t watch Twilight). I am, however, very certain that Pattinson’s performance was tenfold better than that he did of Edward Cullen. These two actors do not overshadow one another and have the perfect dynamic, able of carrying the whole movie by themselves. Which they did. Enough about praising the casts, their performances would not have been possible if it were not for this movie’s concept come to light. The plot of this movie isn’t so linear, and we’re thrown many random scenes that don’t seem to interlink to one another, though are repeated. Only two characters are ever present throughout the whole movie, Ephraim Winslow (Dafoe) and Thomas Howard (Pattinson). The whole narrative follows around these two and their slow descent into insanity. A task such as lighthouse keeping is extremely mundane and repetitive, and Eggers made sure this was present. Every repeated scenario always has a difference to the last, having it be in the intimacy in the relationship between the two protagonists and the contradicting skepticism from one another. Trust is built the same amount distrust is. Dwelling into my favorite aspect of this movie: the cinematography. I am not familiar with any of Eggers’ other work, but after watching this, I am determined to go on a binge of all his movies. Arguably, The Lighthouse is Eggers’ magnum opus, and this most probably is true. The monotonous tone of the movie is encapsulated so perfectly, especially when the entire movie is in black and white. The camera direction and camera work are very reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s; direct, idiosyncratic, and relentlessly detailed. Simple, yet so complex. Aggressively charming, one might say. The only twist Eggers offers is the gloominess and despair expressed through his creation. Angled in a way that shadows dread over the viewer.

BITE-SIZE REVIEW BABY DRIVER Good movie, good soundtrack. The movie would not have work without the soundtrack and that is for sure. Edgar Wright implemented songs to accompany action sequences in the movie and it is executed flawlessly. Not only is this so, but the characters are also aware of this accompaniment, making it meta and even cooler. This is the forefront and selling point of Baby Driver. Plotwise, it follows a very typical action story revolving a bunch of bank robbers. Baby, our protagonist, is the getaway driver of this group and is a master at his craft. A twist on the plot however is a clear contrast between Baby’s criminal life and his normal life. I can exclaim that this up-to-the- norm action movie is somewhat unique compared to others in its genre. Many plot twists are delivered to us nearing the end of the movie, and somehow, they delivered a cliché ‘happily ever after’ ending (sorry not sorry). This is one of my biggest criticisms of this movie. A relatively decent movie and I’m left with a disappointed impression of the movie since the ending didn’t deliver as I hope. Overall, decent movie with an awesome concept, pretty bad ending. TOTAL TIME RATING 1H 53M 7/10 DRAWING BY UMAR
