During that time he has been client, advisor, friend and a massive help to us andeveryone he’s worked with. From starting Gemini Chemicals in 1979, with long term colleagueBarry Dunne, Barrie has been ever present in the forecourt industry for nearly 40 years. When Gemini was taken over by Air-serv in 1999, the new company’s turnover was around £2million. Since then, the remarkable success of Air-serv has driven their turnover to over £20 million. As they saw off many competitive companies, Barrie was highly influential in establishing the Air-serv values; courtesy, professionalism, value for money, friendship, profit-sharing, loyalty and long term relationships forming the bedrock of their strategy. He’s always loved his job, loved working, and has enjoyed genuine bonds with both colleagues and clients alike. A phrase you will often hear is “he will be missed by his clients” – and never has a truer word been spoken. ever done for us?the current debate on ateX certification;the peimF leads the wayWe at the PEIMF have been instrumental in bringing HSE to the table to try to produce clarity on the confusing, complicated issueof the re-classification of substances as flammable. As this edition of INSITE was going to press, a meeting was due to be held involving the key representative bodies in the industry;PEIMF, APEA, FEF, OFTEC, FEA and FPS. We will keep you posted with all developments. Here is an excerpt of our letter to HSE, along with a snapshot of the comments we received from our members.“The differing interpretations being propounded across the industry, both at meetings and in press articles, have created not onlya degree of uncertainty, but also an unfair competitive situation. Retail filling stations will mostly only be using ATEX certifiedequipment for diesel dispensing because of their location in hazard zones created by nearby petrol dispensers. Those companies supplying only the commercial market, where diesel is the only fuel stored and dispensed, have traditionally nothad the need to supply ATEX certified equipment, are now being forced into ATEX certification at considerable cost - or potentiallylose the market on which they have depended for the sale of their products. Some of those companies have deemed itunnecessary to get their products certified.”We believe the only way to resolve this uncertainty is for HSE to publish clear statements that leave industry in no doubt as to whatneeds to be done to be compliant, with both DSEAR and CLP. Here is a brief compilation of member comments on their currentplight with regard to the changes introduced by CLP. You will see from this range of comments that concerns relate mostly to theuncertainty about compliance. This uncertainty has created significant delays in product development and the ability to quote for work to be carried out.The risk itself has not changed... but yet comply with HSG 176, because it does not and “potentially explosive atmosphere”.we're confused. We work for many of the top oil companies, and are preferred suppliers to the likes of Rontec, MFG, MRH as well as many smaller independent petrol retailers. In addition to our standard day to day maintenance and annual testing works, we are enjoying a vast array of different projects At present we are working on 2 major refurbishments, and two knock down/rebuilds for MRH (one in Colchester and one in Kilmarnock), and are about to start a further knock down/rebuild for the Fraser Group . We are also half way through a major refurbishment in Salford for Global Fuels, having just finished two of their other sites in quick succession. To add to this, we have been tasked by Rontec to carry out the electrical installation to the Esso “Synergy” image and upgrade the canopy lighting to LED across the whole of their Esso network (126 Sites, nationwide). www.amgselectrical.com dm petroleum services Dave Major of D.M. Petroleum Services has been operating in the industry since the late seventies. He’s finally taken the plunge, and joined us at the PEIMF. Here are his words. D.M. Petroleum is a family business, founded on solid client relationships. We have a passion for the industry and in maintaining a high standard of service levels to long standing clients. The petroleum industry has grown and developed a considerable amount and, despite the changes, particularly in health and safety procedures, the industry is still healthy and that’s what keeps me interested. The people in the industry are really hard workers and it’s still very much a case of early mornings and long days – come rain or shine. Technology has played a massive role, in that certain aspects of the job are easier these days, as well as changes in the materials from which the pipes are made i.e plastic vs steel. I love spending time with my family and grandchildren, I’m a lifelong Arsenal supporter and big boxing fan. Finally, in my time in the industry, I have met many nice people and made a lot of good friends. [email protected] 50 • Insite Spring 2016 • Issue 70
