may & june 2018 Letter to the Membership We need you! What a year its been! Fiscal year that is… Our Club operates on a fiscal calendar, which ends March 31st and starts anew on April Fools Day. While looking back on the last 12 months of planning, change, refocus, hard work and accomplishments at our Club, it is truly amazing how far we’ve come. And, as of April 1, all of our time and energy is now focused on the next 12-24 months, which will ultimately commence with the grand new opening of the New MAC. I can’t think of a more exciting time to be a member of the MAC. Am I crazy? Maybe a little. Over-optimistic? I think not.As members, we’ve grown to love our home away from home at 758 N. Broadway. Like most homes, we’ve got our littlequirks and our nagging frustrations and perpetual fix-me-up lists, but in the end, we love our homes and just as impor-tantly, the people in it.The MAC is no different. Our ‘home’ is 101-years-old this year and is looking forward to receiving a lot of love in the next12-24 months. As members, we’ve lived in this home for a century and its probably more appropriate to say that we’veendured it over the last decade or so.I admit that I am tugging at your heartstrings when I ask that you endure just a little longer for the good of our home, and the people in it – our MAC family.I felt called six years ago to run for the Board at the MAC to see if I could help in any way, shape or form to a) protect thegreat history and integrity of the Club and its members, and b) lead and / or guide the Club to newer and greater heights.I was fortunate enough to be asked to step in to the President’s role two-and-one-half years ago to work with a wonderful, selfless group of Directors and committee volunteers to help lead the Club in what has become the ‘final chapter’ of itsfirst era.Over the last two-and-one-half years we’ve doubled down our time and our efforts to be sure that the Club and its membershave a second era infinitely greater than its first. After endless strategy sessions, Club consultants, interviews, surveysand much more, we identified our path to achieve our mission, and have embarked on the journey we now take. The journey is long, bumpy at times, contains many forks in the road and isn’t always the easiest to navigate. But, it hasbecome crystal clear to me that the only way we will finish this journey successfully is with all of you by our sides. Thereis no other way to put it, WE NEED YOU!The time is now to ask questions, to give input, to volunteer your time and talents and to just be a vibrant, optimisticand engaged part of our Club. Thank you, as always, for everything you’ve already given to the MAC by being a part ofits membership. But, we need you now more than ever!Stick with us through the storm, and I guarantee that your Legacy won’t be forgotten. Our new MAC willbe the best of the best, and the next era at our Club will be one to make all members, past and present, extremely proud.God Bless,A. David Kriete 5President -- MAC Board of Directors

In Memoriam- Tina Weyand It is with extreme sadness and heavy hearts that the MAC Women share the news that fellow member Tina Weyand passed away on April 3rd due to complications from influenza. Tina was a kind and loving mother, family member and friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand or listen to a friend in need. Her talent, positivity, energy and overall fun-loving personality were evident in all aspects of her life, from her time spent with her daughter to her participation in the Rotary Club. At the MAC, she was very active in the MAC Women Committee and the Nominating Committee. Most recently, she volunteered her time to bartend for the Special Olympics at MAC's. Tina will be greatly missed.6

may & june 2018 MAC m e m b e r S POT L I G H T Paul Sweeney friends at St. Robert School. Thank You MAC for the past 30 years as a Member – Member Since 1987 I look forward to the next 30.My wife Lisa and I volunteered 27 to chair the 2018 St. Robert Emerald Auction, the majorannual fundraiser for the school whereour daughters Katherine and Kennedyattend. For the past several years, the eventhas been held at the Italian CommunityCenter, a very nice location but lacks thecharacter and history of the MilwaukeeAthletic Club. We wanted to change thingsup a bit so we suggested to our co-chairsthat we investigate the MAC. From thefirst inquiry over a year ago to the end ofthe event at 1:00 am on March 10th, thestaff at the MAC did a fabulous job. Thecatering staff was very accommodatingand easy to work with. We were able todevelop a menu and drink options thatwere very competitive with the ICC andother venues in Milwaukee. We receivedsuch positive feedback form the morethan 300 guests as to how beautiful theClub looked and the fantastic level ofservice from the catering staff, bartenders, waiters and waitresses, etc. As a long-time member, I was so proud to show offthe capabilities of this Club to all of our

may & june 2018 MAC histo r y Excerpt from OnMilwaukee.com, published Nov. 14, 2017 at 9:01 a.m. Of course, I've seen it, proudly anchoring the intersection of Broadway and Wells for decades. But I admit the Milwaukee Athletic Club, 758 N. Broadway, was one of those Milwaukee places I took for granted, not thinking about it too much. Until I couldn't seem to stop seeing little reminders of it. First, there was one of its old homes in the Wells Building, where I saw the former gym just under the roof and where I stood in aBy Bobby Tanzilo RSS Feed long-lost but recently re-discovered MAC swimming pool in theTwitter Feed Senior Editor/Writer basement. Then I heard about its rooftop concert series this past summer, and I went on a tour, where I saw some wondrous things.Next, reading a book about a local artist, I again saw one of those wondrous things andlearned more about it. Finally, I visited this year's Frank Lloyd Wright show at MilwaukeeArt Museum, where I spied another reminder of the Milwaukee Athletic Club. The resultis that I'm reminded just how ingrained in the city's history this place is.According to an MAC publication, the Milwaukee Athletic Club was founded as the MilwaukeeAthletic Society in 1879 and incorporated in 1882 by eight fellas who, like the Turners, were focused on \"developing the bodily powers through gymnastic and other exercises.\"Before it moved into its current home – designed by Armand Koch, son of noted Milwaukeearchitect Henry C. Koch – in 1916, the MAC had occupied seven previous homes, the lastof which was the Wells Building (also a Koch commission). The first meeting place wasthe \"Boynton lower hall,\" and the others were, according to MAC's \"The New Building ofthe Milwaukee Athletic Club\":Plankinton Hall (Old Library Building), May 1, 1882-Sept. 1, 1884Weber's Block, 420 E. Water St., Sept. 1, 1884-May 1, 1885388-390 Broadway, third and fourth floors, May 1, 1885-Aug. 1, 1889458 E. may & june 2018 MAC HISTORY\"The building to be erected on the Hathaway corner will be 12 stories high and modern inevery detail,\" boasted \"The New Building of the Milwaukee Athletic Club.\"\"It will be of steel and fire-proof construction throughout. The entire building will bethoroughly ventilated by a modern and elaborate automatic ventilating system. The plansarrange for all the departments needed by the Milwaukee Athletic Club, and make fullprovision as well for the many activities of the Merchants and Manufacturers Association.... The Milwaukee Athletic Club is to raise the $250,000 within 90days. The lessors will thensign the lease and will possession of the property May 1, 1916.\" According to the WisconsinHistorical Society's Architectural Inventory for the 12-story building on Broadway, \"Theclub featured an exclusive clientele of Milwaukee's most prominent businessmen andprofessionals and, according the City of Milwaukee's Central Business Survey, was thelocation where many major business deals were made.\" While it still has the vibe of aplace where deals get done today, my visit made it pretty clear that the club is really opento everyone. There's a little coffee shop and library on the first floor, where, just off thelobby, there's also a pub. The rooftop – home to a nice open-air bar – has great Downtownviews and there are indoor racquetball courts up there ...though the shuffleboard andthe outdoor racquetball and handball courts are gone. Back in the day, there were somelegendary parties up there... and men sunbathed naked (naked swimming in the pools wasallowed until about 2003). Inside, there are men's and women's pool areas, workout areas, fitness classrooms and gyms, of course. A number of floors are occupied by guest roomsthat are rented just like hotel rooms, and there are even some offices in the building, notjust for MAC staffers, but available for rent, there is also a barbershop on site. Previouslythere were bowling lanes in the basement and an amazing Art Deco bar area in the lobbydubbed The Snake Pit (pictured below), which is now long gone, sadly.Current Home | Est 1916 The Snake Pit 29

may & june 2018 MAC HISTORYA surviving Art Deco beauty of a space in the MAC, however, is The Elephant Room, withits undulating bar and great elephant-populated murals.\"It's, to me, the coolest room in the entire building,\" says MAC's Member Services DirectorBrad Schendel, who has a deep institutional knowledge of the club, where he's worked for40 years. \"You can kind of see how, back in the day, when you're talking about the '50s and'60s, this is where business was done. The Elephant Room\"I can absolutely guarantee you, this place would be busy from lunch all the way throughdinner, typically not a lot of women up here. Handshake deals. It was the power brokers ofthe city were right in this room here.\" It's always been a popular space – which is adjacentto the former billiards room – says Schendel, adding, \"The only ones that ever complainedabout it is when we had a Democratic Party event in here, they didn't like it to be calledthe Elephant Room.\"Another adorned space is the Bali Grill on the third floor which serves breakfast, lunchand dinner. Here, the walls are covered in murals depicting tropical scenes, including someonce-controversial topless figures. Perhaps my favorite thing in the entire place is thegargantuan black walnut bas relief above the fireplace in The Lounge on the third floor.Created by Milwaukee artist Dick Wiken, the panel, which is 15-by-8-feet, is intricatelycarved with a wide variety of figures. \"In 1948 the Milwaukee Athletic Club was searchingfor a sculptor to design and execute a wood-carved bas-relief panel for the area above thefireplace in the Club's third-floor men's lounge,\" wrote Anna Passante in her fine surveyof the artist's work, \"Dick Wiken, Milwaukee Architectural Sculptor.\" \"'They decided, withsplendid results, to put their chips on a local product, Dick Wiken,' said Dan Cooper, architectural and interior design consultant and a writer for Craft Horizons. 'I have neverseen finer carving anywhere,' said Cooper in an August 1948 issue of Craft Horizons. 'I say\"bravo\" to anyone who gives local boys a chance to show what they can do...'\"The main portion of the panel shows a variety of athletes engaged in sports, from NativeAmericans playing lacrosse to boxers going at it, a baseball batter, an archer pulling back30

may & june 2018 MAC HISTORYhis bow, a weightlifter raising his bar, a fisherman hauling in his catch and others. Runningalong the bottom is a border of relief representations of Milwaukee history, from PereMarquette to Solomon Juneau trading with the Native Americans to workers building thecity and even a tiny City Hall. It's quite astonishing, really.\"The carving of the panel is not only a piece of artistry,\" Passante quotes from a 1948 issueof the Milwaukee Journal, \"but is also an almost Herculean labor, with the full force ofthe sculptor back of every blow of the hammer. The work should be one that will reflectcredit not only on the artist and the club, but also on Milwaukee, where Wiken receivedhis training.\" Wiken had also designed a frieze depicting the Roman goddess Diana fishingamong the cattails, with a variety of fish in the foreground and a unicorn – a symbol of goodluck – behind her. Wiken tapped stonecutter Adolph Roegner to execute the 44x38-inchpanel in Bedford limestone and it was installed above the MAC's Mason Street entranceas part of a 1954 remodeling project. Alas, another such project – this one in 1993 – led tothe panel's removal. It was then sold to a private collector. The ballroom is a heavily ornamented room that hosts banquets and other events. As youcan see from the photos below, its decor has undergone changes over the years, and atone time the space was also a venue for musical performances. The Grand Ballroom | circa 1930s The Grand Ballroom | circa 2000sThe Milwaukee Athletic Club home has a little something for everyone it seems, but ithas never lost sight of its original purpose, to encourage physical well-being and fitness.Racquetball, anyone? 31
