Cambridge Chronicle Grades I-II Monthly - July 2021 EDUCATION THEN & NOW – A METAMORPHOSIS “Adaptibility to change is itself a hallmark of successful education.” Twenty years ago, education was based on books and lectures, now, it’s iPads and technically designed virtual classrooms. One major difference that has changed through the curriculum in schools is teaching students skills instead of content. We have touched the farthest star and the nearest molecule unseen to the eyes. All this has been possible only because of the evolution in our education. The metamorphosis from ‘Gurukuls’ to virtual classrooms has made learning a ‘Constructive Process’ rather than imposed learning. I, feel proud and happy that my team of teachers at Cambridge Public School have evolved and become learning facilitators. The inclusion of the 21st Century learning skills in the teaching learning process has made learning child centric. We have been successful in touching the hearts of our little stars and making them independent learners. So, what have we done to adapt to this change? The teachers act as a learning catalyst, orchestrating and facilitating activities that spark defining moments for students. The new and improved curriculum design and content delivery, implemented through activity-based learning in class has enabled us to strengthen the teacher student bonding. ‘The Lead to Speak Programme’ has improved communication skills and taught children to listen and respect the views of their fellow students. We, understand that children are the world’s most valuable resource, the classrooms have changed, but for us … hildren are the greatest gift of God, appy faces of children all around, ce-cream and frolicking is all that is known, ove and friendship surround, ecorating this beautiful world, elishing the presence of young innocent minds, njoying every moment, Kindest regards, ot aware of anything other than love and light. Ms. Ankita Mathur Coordinator Grades I -II

Strengthening Online Learning – Online Examination in Grades I - II Academic excellence has always been our core focus and in the process of developing strong and positive attitude towards academics we at Cambridge Public School have developed an interactive and easy to use holistic learning and testing technique. The facilitators of Grade 1 and 2 have been successful in measuring and evaluating the concept understanding of the students by conducting Internal Assessment Tests and Unit Tests. Students submitted subject wise projects to score the 5 marks allotted for Internal Assessment. To ease the challenge of attempting Unit Test 1 the team conducted subject wise Mock Tests prior to the actual Unit Test that began on 13 July,2021. This entire process of attempting the Mock test familiarized the students with the MS Forms platform and the format of the question paper. Step by step procedure was shared with the students to help them attempt the test smoothly. A structured time table was also shared with the parents and the same was followed for conducting the Unit Test. The total marking of the paper was 20 and the questions were multiple choice. Learning from anywhere and any device has given flexibility and mobility to the students. The teaching-learning-testing- evaluating process has evolved over a period of time. Following the consistent and transparent procedure of testing, a systematic grading process is followed and records are maintained to track the academic progress of each and every child. Insight – Teacher’s Corner The world is now online, whether we like it or not. Let us be positive and go with the famous English saying… “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Online classes are an innovative way to ensure that learning doesn’t stop during this pandemic. The academic year 2021-22 is another important page in the history of Cambridge. The structured timetable not only brought discipline in the children but also promised quality fun learning. First grade is all about nurturing and developing those seeds that were sowed in Preschool. We are happy to see that the children have become more independent and have developed an interest in reading and writing. The child's love of learning and discovery happens in these early school years, and it's important that we work together with the child to strike a balance and tap their enthusiasm for learning. Children have their own unique learning style, or a type of learning that is most effective for them. Our teaching learning process caters to all kinds of learners. Most children don’t enjoy just reading from a textbook, copying notes, or “learning” through memorization. Hands-on activities, however, spark a child’s interest and creativity. Celebrations, events and subject weeks implemented in virtual classes enhance the academic program, ensuring holistic development of each child. What do teachers focus on in Grade 1? Emphasis on following a daily routine and discipline. Follow ground rules and stay attentive in class. Respect each other’s views and wait for your turn to speak. Establishing a homework schedule as an important life skill. Ms. Shwetha H P Ability to ask questions to clear any doubts. Grade I – Mother Teacher Gain more confidence in expressing opinions and sharing stories. Page No. 2

National Doctor’s Day 1st July 2021 ‘Salute the Saviours’ “Doctors are truly the greatest heroes, of not just the present but of all time.” When the world is still struggling to survive a pandemic, there probably is no better time to salute our heroes who despite being trapped in the uncomfortable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for hours every day, are continuing to treat patients, and keeping up with everyday developments in the field of COVID-19 research. With the pandemic still far from over, this day is important to honour many doctors who have sacrificed their lives. The students of Grades I & II celebrated this day, 1st of July 2021 and honoured the brave hearts during the online classes. Our parents Dr. Prashant and Dr. Sushama addressed our students and helped them understand the role of doctors as social workers. Their informative speeches reinforced the importance of healthy eating and hygiene. Wearing the right kind of mask and in the right manner has now become a protocol. Our alumni Dr. Harshitha Shree P demonstrated the right way to wear a mask. A few students expressed their desire to become doctors when they grow up as they understand it to be the best way to help and serve the community. They valued and understood the role of doctors and as a token of gratitude made ‘Thank you ‘cards. Page No. 5

SUBJECT ENRICHMENT WEEK Mathematics Week 5th July- 9th July 2021 “Mathematics gives us reason to hope that every problem has a solution.” Math is a natural way to organize and to think. Mathematics week is a yearly celebration at Cambridge Public School, which is an effort to lay a strong foundation of Mathematics among students. This year students participated with lots of enthusiasm virtually. Students across Grade 1 and 2 experienced plethora of activities. Geometry is the foundation of all art forms, and art is the beauty of learning. Grade I Engine Activity Students reveled in Shapes Activity, and their artefacts stole the show. They participated in a fun filled activity of making an engine using various geometrical shapes. The purpose of the activity to instill confidence, teach the students about basic shapes and exploring them in a simple yet creative manner was attained. Concept of Ascending & Descending Order The students presented their Finger-Painting artwork which depicted the concept of Ascending and Descending Order. Page No. 6

Grade IIGrade II 2D Shape Activity: Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding, and genius minds from Grade 2 explored in depth knowledge of the subject. Creating pictures/designs using 2 D shapes. Students with their wings of imagination made beautiful artwork by using 2 D shapes. This activity helped them in learning the basic shapes by applying the concept in real time. The young creative minds made amazing models of space rockets, colorful houses, robots etc. DIY Multiplication Tables Bookmark- Mathematics develops computational skills and in recognition to this, the activity of making a tables bookmark was conducted. The children made a bookmark and revised the multiplication tables by writing them on these bookmarks creatively. Why do students dread Mathematics? Because of the wrong approach. Because it is looked at as a subject. We at Cambridge Public School, once again changed the perception and the event was successful in intriguing the students about the exciting world of Mathematics. Language learning for a child starts right from the day he utters his first words of speech. From then on, it is important to develop the important skills that are required in language learning – Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. As they grow into adolescence, practicing new language skills provides them with a platform to understand the world from a totally new perspective, encouraging them to embrace new customs and culture. Blending technology with activity-based learning provides the young learners a comfortable platform to begin their journey of ‘Learning Hindi & Kannada. Language’. Learning ExperientialEnglish language continues to develop as an important means of international communication.  English teaching can be made interesting and fun through various activities. Having fun while learning also helps students retain information better because the process is enjoyable and memorable.  Grade 2 students participated in some engaging learning activities which helped them to learn and grasp the concept of This/That/These/Those & Nouns. For the topic This/That/These/Those, the students demonstrated different objects and used ‘this/ that/these/those’ to point at those objects. Thus, the students exhibited their understanding of the concept. To differentiate between Common and Proper Nouns, the students were given a list of nouns to identify each noun as a Common Noun or a Proper Noun. The successful completion of this activity gave the teacher a clear idea that the students had understood the topic well.   To learn the concept of Singular & Plural Nouns the students drew pictures of objects in their scrapbooks showing their number. Community helpers are an integral part of the society. The lesson ‘Partho the Park Keeper’ reflected on the role of community helpers in understanding the society better. The students exhibited their knowledge on community helpers by drawing and pasting their pictures and also writing about their significance in the society. Page No. 10

D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) D.E.A.R time!! Let’s read the book we want, enjoy and no questions asked! Reading is an exercise of the mind which helps the child develop his/her imagination and thinking skills. The premise of DEAR is to ‘literally’ drop everything, pick up any book we like and read for pleasure. This programme aims to help the students discover the fun of reading, encourage them to read more often on their own, thus improving their literacy, analytical and reading skills. It motivates the students and leaves a deep and enduring love for reading. This year with the virtual classes we took the initiative to conduct D.E.A.R time virtually for Grade 1 and 2 on 27th July. Each of our young readers enjoyed reading the book of their choice. The students were very happy and excited about D.E.A.R time event, where they sat and read with their teachers. It was really a delightful and joyful moment to see our young students reading silently and visiting the world of books. This incorporated some fun learning and created memorable moments. We strongly believe that if a child develops a love for reading at a young age it will remain a life-long habit. Upcoming Events & Activities: Content Editing: Ms. Anuradha Singh & 1.
