The Tree of Tales (Story III): It’s All About Teamwork Jesse and some of his friends had decided to wake up early and play football all morning. All his friends loved playing football; in fact, they were all pretty good at the game. Each one of them decided to get some equipment for the game. While one got the football, another got the goal posts; someone else got the corner flag and another got the whistle. Since all the boys were good at the game, there were some ego issues amongst them. On Sunday morning, they gathered and set up all the equipment for the game. But when it came to deciding the teams, the boys got into a bit of a fight. Each one thought he had the right to choose his teams and were better than the other. Eventually they decided that the person who had got the most important equipment would get to decide the teams. And to figure out what the most important equipment was, they started playing and eliminating the equipment that they thought was not needed for the game. First went the whistle, as the referee could shout just as easy; next went the corner flags; then the goal post. One equipment after the other was eliminated until the 55

boys even replaced the ball with a small tin dustbin. When a passerby noticed them playing, he mentioned to his son- “Look son, see how these children are playing even though they don’t have a football. It is sad that they will never be able to improve their game playing with that dust bin.” The boys overheard this and realized how foolish they were. Because of their egos and pride they had spoilt their game and were playing shamefully. They decided to put their egos aside and make teams. They got all their equipment back out and had great fun once they started playing. While games and sports promote a competitive spirit, always remember to keep that spirit healthy. Understand the importance of playing together, and cooperating with one another. 56

The Olympics Citius Altius Fortius, which means “Faster, Higher, Stronger” in Latin. The above phrase stands as a reminder that an athlete must first better self/herself and his achievements, and mustn’t focus on coming first. Citius Altius Fortius is also the Olympic Motto and encourages each of us to be better versions of ourselves, and not better versions of someone else. The Olympics and Paralympic Games represent the value of international friendship and cooperation among the athletes and countries. Do you know that the 5 interlocked rings on the Olympic flag represent 5 participating continents i.e. in Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe. The colours- blue, yellow, black, green and red, are interlocked and chosen because the flag of each country in the world has at least one of these colours in it. Pierre De Coubertin is not only the designer of the flag but also the Father of Modern Olympic Games. He envisioned that the games had the capacity to not only inspire peace but also promote a sense of belonging among players. 57

The Tree of Tales (Story IV): A Gift Lanie was a shy girl. While many of her classmates were her friends and loved to talk to her, Lanie never spoke much to any of them. She kept to herself and was pretty much a loner. To add to it, Lanie always studied hard, but never got good grades. Her mother would scold her for getting poor marks in her exams and Lanie did not know how to explain to her mother that she really had studied. But those pesky letters always ran around on the page in front of her. Her parents always yelled and told her she was ‘good for nothing’. Poor Lanie did not know how to study. One day as Lanie sat alone in the class, during the break she was humming a song to herself. Lanie loved to sing but was afraid to sing in front of others. A new teacher, Mrs Patel, had recently joined the school and was Lanie’s new class teacher. Mrs Patel overheard Lanie sing. She was in awe of Lanie’s voice- such a young girl and what a melodious voice! Mrs Patel went back to the teacher’s room and mentioned this to the other teachers. They all told her it was great that Lanie had a good voice, but what use it was when 63

her grades were terrible. Mrs Patel decided to investigate further as to why Lanie got such terrible grades when she seemed like such a hardworking student. She realised that Lanie might have a problem, which no one was willing to see. Everyone thought that Lanie was being lazy with her studies. The next day, Mrs Patel asked Lanie to meet her during lunch. Scared and worried, Lanie went to meet Mrs Patel. Mrs Patel smiled as Lanie entered and told her they were going to learn a song. The teacher had taken a chapter from their books and made it into a song. Lanie easily picked up the song and remembered all the words. It was the first time that Lanie had managed to learn anything so easily. She was thrilled! Mrs Patel promised to teach her all the chapters if Lanie kept practising her singing. By the end of the year, Lanie had not only improved her grades but she also participated in the Annual Singing competition and won! Over the years, Lanie created a song routine for her studies and improved her grades. But she focused more attention on her music. She grew up and became a talented famous singer admired by thousands. But no matter how famous Lanie got, she always remembered the gift her teacher, Mrs Patel had given her that day in the lunch break- the gift of believing she was special, of recognising her talent and nurturing it, and most importantly of believing in her. 64

Talent For Greatness Each of us has a talent hidden within us. It’s time you found yours. Discuss with your friends, family and teacher and then ask yourself- what do you think your talent is? What would you like to be when you grow up? Education is important, but it is also important to work on your talents. Figure out what they are. Does your school or your teacher help you follow your talents? Select a role model for yourself. Let your role model be from the field you see yourself in, in the future. Becoming famous or well-known in any field is not just based on talent alone. A. R. Rahman, an Oscar winning musician has very humble roots. His father passed away when he was 9 years old, and young Rahman had taken it upon himself to support his family. He started off as a small-time keyboard player. But he was talented, and more importantly, he had dreams and aspirations. He mastered not only the keyboard also but 3 more instruments. He had dropped out of school when he was very young, but his hard work and dedication to his talent helped him get a scholarship at the famous Trinity College in London. A humble musician, Rahman followed his passion and nurtured his talent throughout his life. 65

The Tree of Tales (Story V): Peace- Protect; Don’t Destroy There was once a young boy who was quiet and calm. He always looked out for those living things that were unable to protect themselves. And above everything else, he loved peace and joy. But this little boy had a brother, who was quite the opposite of him. His brother would tie a fire cracker to a dogs tail and see it run scared and crying, just for fun. No matter how much the peace-loving brother tried to explain to his brother that what he did was wrong, it did not matter. The boys went over the summer vacation for a family holiday with their parents to the country home. Beautiful forests surrounded their home. While the peace-loving brother would roam the forests and marvel at the creatures running about, the violent one decided to lay down traps to snare rabbits and other woodland creatures. But one day as the violent brother went to the forest, something awful happened. He had forgotten all about the snare he placed under the bushes and accidentally walked right into it. Fortunately, the peace-loving brother was walking about near the forest when he heard his brother's screams for help. He rushed to see what had happened. 72

When he reached his brother, he was shocked to see his brother’s leg stuck in a metal contraption bleeding. He ran to his brother and told him to hold still. Slowly and gently, he tried to open the trap, hurting his own hands in the process. But he successfully managed to free his brother’s leg. The peace-loving boy helped his brother back home. All the way back the two of them were quiet. When they reached their home, the violent one turned to his brother and said, “I have always hurt others and never thought of the pain I cause them. For the first time, I realised what a monster I must look like to all these small defenceless creatures. I think it was stupid and wicked of me to do those things. Never again brother!” Do you know It is easy to be that even as selfish and mean. a small boy, Try finding love, Gautam Buddha always compassion and tried to protect animals and patience in your heart was non-violent by nature? In later years, he they are doing wrong. Can you be had even reformed a notorious strong? dacoit known as 'Angulimal'. 73

India- Diverse, not divided Ours is a country vast and wide. With different castes and religions and cultures and backgrounds, we all have many many differences. But these differences also make us special. While there are always evil forces trying to divide us, it is your duty to find the good in every person. Take the example of our former President, the loving A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Born to a Muslim family in the Hindu pilgrimage town of Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, it was inevitable that Kalam would make friends with some Hindu children too. In fact, his best and closest friend happened to be the son of the head priest of the Hindu temple in the town. The boys loved each other’s company and would always be found sitting together. Kalam went to the mosque, but he also sat outside the temple, lost in the sounds of the chanting. People would stare at him and wonder 74

why he sat there, but it did not matter to young Kalam. The boys did not differentiate among between because of their religions, and neither did either of their parents. However, a class teacher who did not know of their friendship was shocked to see a Hindu and a Muslim boy sit side by side chatting. He yelled at Kalam and demanded he should sit away from the Hindu boy. Both the boys were devastated and went home crying. Thankfully, the head priest was a wise man who saw his son’s friendship with Kalam gleefully. It was a friendship between two boys who loved to play and have fun together. Their religions did not come in their way. The priest called the teacher and Kalam home. He explained to the teacher what he had done wrong and demanded to apologise to Kalam. The teacher realized his folly. It does not matter what caste or culture or religion you come from. Always look at another person for who he is, how he talks to you. Be friends with someone because you have fun with him, because he helps you, because you help him, because he is there for you, and not because of what caste or religion he belongs to. You have the power to make India a truly rich diverse nation and not a divided one. 75
