Story III : Level the Playing Field Hi my little friends, I, Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. In a forest far away, there lived many great animals together in harmony. Each animal was different and each animal had some advantage and some disadvantage. In this forest, the animals would hold a race every month. Due to the grass, shrubs and trees in the forest most often it was the quick kangaroo who won. Unfortunately, it was the penguin that suffered the most in these races. With his small feet and arms, the penguin would always come last. Mr. Kangaroo would always make fun of the penguin. He would ridicule him and call him names. This made Mr. Penguin very sad and he never wanted to take part in these games. But then, one fine day the fox changed the location of the race. And he told everyone present that this time his money was on the penguin winning. Mr. Kangaroo heard that and laughed. He was angry that how any animal could think the penguin better than him. He insulted Mr. Penguin even more that day. Mr. Penguin, however, was used to hearing the insults from Mr. Kangaroo being saddened, he walked away. 51

On the day of the race, the contestants climbed up a hill for their race. This route was new to them and they did not know what to expect. But as they climbed and Mr. Penguin kept tripping over his own feet, the kangaroo could not stop laughing and ridiculing the Penguin even more. Eventually, they reached the peak and saw the route of the race. The route of the race was half on land and half through the lake to the finish point. The penguin was very slow on land, but none could swim faster than him. And the kangaroo was the fastest on land but he could not swim at all! How would he finish the race? The race started, and Mr. Kangaroo overtook all the contestants. Mr. Penguin came last while running. But as soon as they reached the lake, Mr. Penguin happily jumped in and swam the fastest to the finish line. He won the race, while Mr. Kangaroo stood on the other side of the lake staring at him. After the race, rather than making fun of the Kangaroo, Mr. Penguin went over to Mr. Kangaroo and offered to teach him how to swim. 52

Differently Abled When someone has a mental or physical condition wherein he may not be able to function normally, we call him differently abled. It would be wrong to call him ‘disabled’ because they are not in any way ‘un-able’, rather they possesses a set of abilities that we normal human beings may not have. For instance, a blind person may not be able to see, but his other senses, especially those of hearing, smelling and feeling are much much sharper than yours or mine. People such as Guru Salauddin Pasha, who started the world’s first and only dance troupe for the differently abled, Arunima Sinha, who lost her leg in an accident yet was the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest and Shekhar Naik, who became a T20 blind cricket champion with 32 centuries to his name; teach us that having a setback in anyway should not hamper the way we see life. There are many, many more such individuals who teach us the value of a life and the importance of never giving up. We each have weaknesses and we each also have our strengths. Accept your weaknesses and work to your strengths. Do you know that Helen Keller was born without the ability to see. By the age of 19 years, due to an illness she became deaf and dumb. While most people in that era were institutionalised, Helen, with the help of her parents and teacher overcame her disability and learnt to speak and read. 53

Story IV:Don’t Be a Nomad Hi my little friends, I, Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. One day Mrs Jackson, the history teacher, began telling the class all about how humans lived many, many years ago. She said that in the beginning, humans were nomads. Nomads are people who never live in one place for very long. They stay only as long as they find food and their needs are met. After that they move to new places for food and water. She then went on to explain that once humans learnt farming and growing chickens and cattle; they realised that they could stay in one place and thus they began taking care of their land. They would keep it clean and green. Before Mrs Jackson could go on, Kiara from her class raised her hand and asked her, “Mrs Jackson, does this mean that we are nomads once again?” Mrs Jackson knew Kiara to be a smart girl and from a decent family. So, she did not understand why Kiara thought they all were nomads. She asked Kiara to explain what she meant. Kiara said, “Everywhere I look people are just taking from the land. Outside our town, the people were cutting down forests and not planting any new 63

trees. The fishermen take fish in large nets from the ocean. What will all these people do when trees and fish are over? I am sure they will move to a new place in search of trees and food, just like the nomads.” Mrs Jackson thought for a moment, “How did such a young child realise we were regressing and us adults did not?” She told Kiara she was right and that as a class they should all do something. The next day, all the children made posters and papers saying “WE ARE NOT NOMADS”. They went around town explaining to people that they needed to take care of the environment. They began recycling plastics and using only recycled paper. They planted trees and kept their town clean. Soon, this little initiative got the attention of the media and other towns began following their examples. Do you know that out of India’s total population, 8.6% are tribals? Tribals are the true friends of the forest, because they protect the land and trees of the forest and keep the waters clean. But due to mining, dams, roads and industrial development our forests are dissapearing. Help the tribals protect the forests by buying items made by them, such as handicrafts. 64

When Mother Nature is angry Natural disasters can happen at any time and give no warning. Whether they are storms, hurricanes, volcanoes erupting or earthquakes. While volcanoes are specific to certain places, earthquakes, storms and floods occur almost everywhere at any time. Story V: Freedom Hi my little friends, I, Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. 15th August was soon approaching and the children’s class teacher decided to conduct an experiment with the children. She wanted them to understand the meaning and importance of freedom. She told the children that they each had to plan an experiment on freedom and was given 3 days to do so. 3 days later, the teacher asked the class what experiments they had thought of to help understand the 75

meaning of freedom. Jill was the first to come forward. She asked her classmate Rohini to come forward for the experiment too. Jill first brought out 5 different coloured boxes filled with different kinds of sweets and offered them to her class teacher. She told her class teacher that she had to choose one. The teacher gratefully took the pink one. Then Jill kept those boxes aside and offered 5 boxes, all blue coloured, to Rohini. Rohini looked dissapointed but picked a blue box anyway. Jill then explained to the teacher and her classmates, that she thought freedom was about the chance to choose. Her teacher had the choice of selecting one from many different boxes. Whereas, poor Rohini wasn’t given any choice. She had to take a blue box. The teacher was very impressed and explained to the children that their Independence came at a great cost. It cost their forefathers their lives, just so that we can breathe freely today. We have been given a great gift. The freedom to makes choices in our lives. Let us not squander this gift and respect it. 76

India- My Joy & Pride Bharat was extremely excited this new year. It was already nearing the end of the month and his parents had decided to take him for the Republic Day Parade. He loved to see the various floats of each state and the strong soldiers of every contingent marching. The tanks, missiles and aircrafts: they all made him feel proud to be part of this amazing country. Watching the floats of different states just made him feel so tiny! He thought, “My India is such a large country! It is incredible how many different cultures and religions are co-existing here together.” From the mountainous terrain of the north to the beautiful waters in the south, and from the deserts and coastal regions in the west to the lush valleys and mountains in the east and north-east, India has everything- everything geographically and culturally. Bharat attended the parade, and he knew it was a day he would never forget. He got to see the President and the Prime Minister of our country, and also so many other important people. 77
