Story IV: Take a Stand for Mother Earth Hi my little friends, I, Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. There was once a young boy who did not care about the environment. He would eat a packet of chips and throw the packet in the street, or eat chocolate and throwthe wrapper in the park. But it wasn’t his fault. He learnt all this from his parents. His father owned a car that threw out harmful smoke into the air. His mother would throw the garbage right out of the window. No matter how many times his teacher or friends told him that it was bad to litter and throw garbage, he would not listen. They all explained the harm he was doing to mother nature, to the planet; but the boy could not understand why they all nagged him so much. Then one day, his teacher took his class on a field trip. She took them to a garden near a factory. But the garden was not pretty. Most of the trees were chopped; there were garbage, plastic and other items littered everywhere. The plants and the shrubs had dried up and died and there was heavy smog in the air. 52
The teacher explained to the children that the garden was like the planet. Pollution and garbage had destroyed it. If we did not do anything to save our planet, very soon the entire world would become like this. The children all looked shocked to see a beautiful garden look like this. But the scene before him shocked the boy the most. That night, he had horrible dreams where all the plastic and garbage his family had thrown around had collected in his house and was piling very high. There was thick smoke everywhere in his house. He could not move, he could not breathe and was suffocating in that garbage. He awoke the next day and explained his dream to his parents. He begged his parents to be more responsible. After all, he had his entire life ahead of him and his future did not look good if they kept destroying their surroundings. Moral: There is only one place we call home, and that is Planet Earth. It belongs to each of us. If we do not protect it and keep it clean then our future will be destroyed. Learn a new word- Suffocate- [verb] not being able to breathe because of lack of air. 53
Each one, plant one With growing population and pollution, waste and garbage it is important that we learn to protect the environment in our own little ways. Take the example of Mr. Rajesh Naik. Do you know who he is? Rajesh Naik changed 120 acres of dry land into beautiful organic farmlands. He created a 50 feet lake on these lands, and today this lake gives more than 40,000 litres of water to the area around it. Jyotsna Sitling helped change the fate of the Himalayas by getting everyone in her community involved. Through hard work and help from other people, they managed to collect 50,000 kg of garbage and send it for recycling! For 3 years 11,000 people helped from 82 villages, only because Jyotsna Sitling asked them to spend at least 1 day to clean their own village. 54
Shubhendu Sharma started an experiment in his home’s backyard, and today he has created a forest there! He has helped create 33 such forests in people’s communities already! Just like Rajesh Naik, Jyotsna Sitling and Shubhendu Sharma, there are many many more people who have helped in their own way to protect the environment. You can too! • Gather your friends, and initiate clean-up drives in your community. Every Sunday, clean the community. • Trees help to reduce carbon dioxide and increase the oxygen in the air. They help to clean the air and cool down the temperature. • Every week, plant one tree in your community. That amounts of 4 trees a month and 32 trees in a year And just imagine if each of you does this, then how many trees there will be! 55

Story V:Treat others with Kindness Hi, my little friends, I Brainy Bunny have a wonderful story to share with you from my big bag of stories. Josh and his younger brother lived in a small town. They would go to school, play with their friends and study like every other child in their town. There was also a small shy girl who went to the same school as Josh. But other children made fun of this little shy girl. Not because she was shy, but because she could not speak as well as they. They would laugh at her and call her names. One day, Josh overheard the other children making fun and saw the little girl crying. He didn’t know the reason, but he felt bad for the little girl. He went up to the children and told them to stop for a second and listen. Then Josh asked the children to imagine her to be one of their siblings, their sister. He asked them if they would still want to see her cry, or they would instead help her with her language problem. He asked the children, “If we do not help one another then who will? If someone made fun of one of you or your sister’s shortcomings, would you like it? You would not. Then why make fun of someone else?” “Just because the little shy girl came from a poor family did not mean that she was any different from the other children. As children, we all have rights. But we also have some responsibilities. And it is important that we know them.” Learn a new word: Sibling: [noun] a person related to us by blood; a brother or sister. 64

India is a growing country with a very large portion of youth population. This means that the country has more young people than old people. And this is important. Because it is the young people who are the future of our country. But in many parts of the country, there are children who have to work and are not given education. And a country where its children are not educated cannot grow. However, there are wonderful people who have helped in their own small way to change this. One such example is Mrs. Rajani Paranjpe, who has promised to make 100% literacy rate real. She started a programme called “Door Step School”, where she and her team take education to children who do not go to school. They teach children on the pavements, at railway stations, construction sites and even big markets. They teach as many children as they can find between the ages of 3 and 18 years. Every child loves toys, but not every child is lucky to have toys. Shweta Chari is a lady who started a simple programme called “Toybank”. She spreads the message to parents to donate the old 66
toys of their children to her. She then wraps these toys and gives them to children on streets and those who cannot buy toys. She has helped bring a smile on the faces of more than 8,000 children. Prakash Kaur was left on the streets by her parents. However, as she grew up she decided that no girl should ever be left like that, alone in the world. She started a Unique Home for girls, where she has taken in unwanted girls and given them education and taught them other things. She treats these girls as her own. Just like these women, there are many more people who have helped make a difference in the life of all those children who have not been given a chance to study, to learn, to laugh and play and have a sweet childhood. • You too can make a difference. With the help of your friends, donate your old clothes, your old toys and books. Give them to someone who has need for them. • Study in groups once a week and help other children from your class who are weak in studies. Help them learn as you learn and revise. • Treat every other child with love and care, the same way that you would want to be treated. 67
