Manager’s Corner February 18, 2022 Dear TGO Community, Please join me in congratulating Karan Begy on her recent promotion to Food and Beverage Manager at Blue Heron Restaurant. Karan joined our CSA team in September 2021 as assistant manager to Orhan Soysal. When Orhan departed in late October, I asked Karan to serve as tem- porary restaurant manager while I searched to fill the manager position. During this transition time, Karan demonstrated her leadership, experience and commitment to TGO. She proved that we already employed the right person for this job. Karan is a hard worker, a good leader, and she has earned the respect of the Blue Heron team and guests. She maintains very high standards for guest services and food quality. Under Karan’s leadership, our Blue Heron has continued to post great reviews and successful business results. Recently the CSA scored another recruiting win. We filled a newly-created, full-time position called Collections Attendant to address the messy conditions of our community garbage and debris center. Brian is our newest CSA employee, and he is stationed at our garbage and debris center five days a week. He is doing an excellent job of keeping this entire area swept, clean and organized. There is a noticeable difference in the conditions of this area now, and Brian is also available to assist our residents with bulk, garbage and recycling as needed. Soon you may notice St Johns River Water Management District staff operating heavy equipment along our TGO property boundary. I was notified this week that St Johns staff will work to improve their fire breaks in preparation for prescribed burn and wildfire season. Their work will include mowing and bulldozing trees and shrubs with heavy equipment to create defensible fire lines. These fire breaks provide safe access for staff and emergency vehicle to access natural areas, and a defensible line free of flammable vegetation where a wildfire could be slowed down or extinguished before it burns into TGO property. These improvements are needed before the St Johns can perform any prescribed burning. This work is regu- larly promoted and encouraged by our TGO Firewise Committee, because it is the best safeguard for TGO residents should a wildfire begin. If you see heavy equipment working along our perimeter fence, please do not approach the equipment. Remain a safe distance away at all times. The operator may not be able to see you as they are working. I need to remind all residents that you must receive written permission from CSA before clearing any vegetation, trees or bushes behind your home on CSA conservation property. This written permission will be placed in your property file in the CSA office. Our Firewise Committee has outlined some general guidelines and best practices for clearing underbrush to safeguard your home from wildfire, but they cannot provide written permission for cutting or clearing beyond your property boundary. Clearing without CSA permission is not allowed. Unauthorized cutting will result in a fine per our rules. We have completed the installation of seven new LED streetlight poles in The Manor parking lot and along Hospitality Way. We are now in the process of powering those new poles and converting all existing poles to LED lights. The new lights are proving to be a great improvement for our community, as they provide a much brighter and safer parking area at night. CSA has now removed the temporary light tower. This project will be completed by the end of January. In closing, I want to offer a shout-out to Cam Pelletier, a long-time TGO resident who turned 100 years young on January 18 th this week. A surprise party was held for Cam on Saturday at the TGO Church Fellowship Hall. Congratulations Cam for one century of life! Sincerely, Billy Specht CSA Manager 3

The Great Outdoors Community Church Church and Men’s Breakfast Group WE’RE BACK! Men, mark your calendars with the dates for the upcoming 2022 Men’s Breakfasts. The dates are: February 19 • March 19 • April 16 We will be offering a tasty breakfast with eggs, potatoes, meat, pancakes or biscuits and gravy, fruit, orange juice and cof- fee or tea, catered by Kelly’s Cuisine, all for only $10.00 each. We eat at 8:00 A.M. followed by some informative speakers who will educate us and then offer some great opportunities to ask questions. In January, we have one of the most sought-after speakers, Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Sheriff of Brevard County. He is best known throughout the United States for his innovative ways. Our February speaker will be Jeannine M. Stein, MD, FACMS, a well-known skin cancer surgeon. Several of us here in TGO have already needed her services. She should be able to give us good information as to what to look for and how to prevent our needing her. Then in March, we have the return of our most asked-for speaker, Laurilee Thompson, Owner of Dixie Crossroads, and a knowledgeable advocate for saving our ecology. Our April speaker is yet to be determined. Watch for times when tickets can be purchased in Fellowship Hall starting three Sundays prior to each specific breakfast. We’re very fortunate to have these speakers. Meet our Pasture - Dr. David W. The Great Outdoors Golf Course Improvements on Schedule for 2024 Happy New Year 2022! These past two years living through a pandemic were emotionally testing and turbulent, but I saw the people of TGO focus on safeguarding our collec- tive health, being supportive of each other, and spreading kindness during tough times. I hope this New Year brings you many days of laughter, adventure, love, good health, and all the other things that make life special. So far 2022 has brought us some beautiful Florida winter weather. Now it’s time to pack up and store our holiday decorations, and organize around this new year. “These planned improvements for our TGO course is not only a strong investment but will also make us one of the premiere courses on the Space Coast” There are three CSA administrative items that change this year. First, our office is discontinuing the distribution of the small oval sticker that you previously received in your sub-association annual billing, which designated the year. In the past, we asked you to place this on your vehicle win- dow, but we decided this sticker is no longer necessary. Second, the cost of new bar code stickers will remain at $5, but moving forward, CSA must charge $5 for replacement bar code stickers as well as new stickers. This nominal fee covers the cost of ordering these stickers. Finally, this week the CSA Office is sending out letters to all owners currently storing items in our storage lot. This letter outlines some new policies and rules related to what can be stored in our lot. This lot is now designated only for storage of vehicles, boats, trailers, and tow dollies. Vehicles must remain in good repair and must be properly registered and tagged. If you have questions or concerns about these new policies, please contact me or Sabrina in the CSA Office. Shortly before Christmas, our Lake Judy fountain stopped working. Our CSA crew attempted to troubleshoot the prob- lem, then I contacted our vendor, Lake Doctors, to remove the fountain to diagnose it. Around The Great Outdoors 44
Around The Great Outdoors Above - Billy Specht spent the afternoon with The CSA crew while working on some TGO safety improvement projects. Top Left - Participants of our TGO Aquasize class tested the new Blue Heron Healthy Choice menu together, then participated in a Healthy Eating class at Blue Heron, led by aquasize instructor and nutritionist Diana Fernandez. They gave the menu a thumbs-up! Bottom Left - Our CSA maintenance team improved road safety by installing yellow safety lines and reflectors at one of our busy Plantation Islands. Our safety committee is also working on improving directional signs at these islands. Our CSA buildings team installs one of seven new LED street lights. This one is going along the perimeter of our Manor parking lot. Left - CSA Collections attendant Brian takes a minute for a photograph. He is making a big difference in the cleanliness and organization of our trash and debris area. 45
