4.0 CHAPTERS CHAPTER 1: HISTORY OF NESTLE Figure 1: The Nestle Company Building in 1866 Url: https://www.nestle.com/sites/default/files/2022-12/nestle-company-history-timeline.pdf The most well-known company, which is Nestle, is a company that supplies a wide range of food and beverage brands that are everyday necessities for all people throughout the world. Heinrich Nestle, also identified as Henri Nestle, established the Nestle Company in 1866. The company was located in Vevey, Switzerland. In 1867, Henri Nestlé created an innovative baby food, and in 1905, his company united with Anglo-Swiss to become the Nestlé Group. From 1866 through 1905, the Nestle Company managed to expand, begin operations and manage their business. The following year until now, this major corporation has made success with the products it has created. Starting from 1866, The Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company was founded by American brothers Charles and George Page. They launch the first condensed milk production facility in Europe using the plentiful fresh milk supplies found in Switzerland. The milk is distributed under the Milkmaid brand. It is promoted as a secure, long-lasting solution for fresh milk. Next in 1867, Henri Nestle had launched a ‘farine lactee’ which is flour with milk . His idea to combine flour with milk is typical for babies who cannot be breastfeed and to deal with the high death rate. Henri Nestle combines it with cow’s milk, wheat flour and sugar. After that, he started using the iconic ‘nest’ logo for every milk he produced. After several years, in the year 1875, Henri Nestle who at the age of 60 years old sell his company and factory in Vevey to three 7
local businessmen. To increase production and sales, they hire chemists with expertise and skilled workers. Figure 2: Evidence Henri Nestle selling his company and factory. Url: https://www.nestle.com/sites/default/files/2022-12/nestle-company-history-timeline.pdf While in 1878, Nestlé and Anglo-Swiss engaged in fierce competition. Condensed milk and infant cereal are currently selling better than other original product variants in their market. Both businesses increase sales and export production. In addition, Anglo-Swiss immigrated to the US in 1882, and in 1902 he sold its US-based business and set the path for the eventual merger with Nestlé. After that, in 1904 Nestle finally established their first chocolate for the first time. They started selling it after taking over export sales for Peter and Kohler. Nestlé contributed to the development of milk chocolate in 1875 by sending condensed milk to Vevey neighbor Daniel Peter. To make the first milk chocolate that can be consumed, Peter applies this in his experiments. Finally, Nestlé & Anglo Swiss had more than 20 factories by 1905, selling goods in Australia, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The corporation was experiencing financial success during the Belle Époque, or \"Beautiful Age,\" as the First World War drew near. The dairy company currently operates on a global scale.Apart from that, Nestle also has expanded its company and factory in Malaysia. Nestle Malaysia once known as the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Business when the company was created in Malaysia in 1912. In order to provide 8

CHAPTER 4: CONTROVERSIES AND CRITICISMS Expected Not To Increased The Price According to the statement, Nestle Malaysia has chosen to hold off on raising product pricing till the end of the current calendar year. According to reports, this choice was made in response to falling food commodity costs. In other words, Nestle Malaysia has decided not to increase prices to customers at this time in response to the falling costs of the raw ingredients used in their products. Food commodity prices have fluctuated during the pandemic for a number of reasons, including supply chain interruptions, changes in demand and overall economic circumstances. These goods serve as the ingredients for Nestle Malaysia’s food and beverage products. When the costs of food commodities decline, the corporation may experience lower manufacturing expenses. Nestle Malaysia may be seeking to retain affordability for customers and maybe gain competitive edge in the market by deciding against raising the cost of its products. This choice can be calculated to keep clients and give them security in the face of unstable economic conditions. It's critical to remember that this information is dependent on the precise assertion made in the paragraph and could not accurately reflect the current reality. It is advised to consult official comments or releases from the firm or dependable news sources for the most recent details on Nestle Malaysia’s price decisions. 17
Figure 9 Association Number: 2012/0009997W Nestle Malaysia does not plan to increase the price of its main products such as milo and maggi for the time being despite being faced with high raw material supply prices and so on 18
The Milo Controversy in Malaysia The debate surrounding Nestle's well-known chocolate malt beverage, Milo, is known as the “Milo Controversy” in Malaysia. Concerns over Nestle Malaysia’s nutritional claims about the health advantages of Milo gave rise to the dispute. When concerns were raised concerning the veracity and correctness of the company’s nutritional claims, the matter attracted notice in Malaysia. According to several detractors and consumer advocacy organizations, Nestle Malaysia misrepresented Milo as a healthy beverage that could give kids the critical nutrients and energy they need. Malaysian authorities launched investigations in response to the scandal in order to determine the veracity of the nutritional claims and if they adhered to regional laws and standards. The goal of the inquiry was to make sure that Nestle Malaysia did not intentionally mislead customers regarding the nutritional value and advantages of Milo. Nutritional claims on food and beverage items are an important problem because they have a direct impact on how customers perceive and decide what to eat. Concerns about the controversy’s possible effects on public health were raised, especially among kids who make up a large portion of Milo’s target market. As the maker of Milo, Nestle Malaysia probably came under scrutiny and pressure to address the issue and clarify the nutritious claims made for their product. To address the issues mentioned they could have had to work with regulatory bodies, offer more details or change their marketing and labeling procedures. It's crucial to remember that the circumstances of the Milo Controversy in Malaysia may have changed over time, and the resolution and results may be susceptible to future conversations, inquiries or regulatory changes. It is advised to consult reliable news sources or official Nestle Malaysia comments for the most recent information and developments. 19
Nestlé takes unilateral action on marketing sugary products to kids The phrase “ Nestle takes unilateral action on marketing sugary products to kids “ implies that Nestle has taken independent action to address the marketing of sugar-sweetened products to children. Concerns regarding the effects of marketing unhealthy foods and beverages, especially those rich in sugar, on children’s health and wellbeing have grown in recent years. As a significant food and beverage giant, Nestle has come under fire for its child targeted marketing strategies. Nestle has taken unilateral action, which means it has moved without outside pressure or regulatory restrictions, to address the problem of marketing sugary goods to children in order to allay these worries. This demonstrates that Nestle has proactively adopted efforts to change its kid marketing tactics, concentrating on lowering the advertising of sugar-rich foods. Nestle is recognising the possible impact of marketing on kid’s food preferences and the need to encourage healthier alternatives by taking unilateral action. This could entail alterations to marketing strategies, container designs, the employment of kid-friendly characters, or celebrity endorsements of sugary goods. Nestle may want to do this in order to show its commitment to responsible advertising and supporting healthier lives, as well as to connect its marketing strategies with public health guidelines. It's important to note that Nestle’s particular activities regarding the marketing of sugary goods to youngsters may differ and may be the subject of continual examination and modifications. It is advised to consult Nestle’s official comments, rules or announcement on their marketing practices aimed at children for the most accurate and up to date information. 20
