Tips on listing publications in your resumeThere are many industries where publication ofyour own work is a critical part of your careerdevelopment. As professionals in industries thatrequire us to actively publish research studies, essays, articles, textbooks, etc. we have to findways to account for such publications on ourresumes. There are a number of things to considerin respect to publications as you develop yourresume.First, ask yourself how relevant the publicationsare to your career objective. If you have recent

publications that support your career objective, make sure to create a separate heading on yourresume and list the publications in reversechronological order. Follow the AP style whenlisting your publication, omitting your name fromthe listing if you were the only author of the text,as that is implied. Do not list publications thatdo not support your career objective on yourresume; while they may be helpful to mention toyour potential employer via a cover letter, it isnot necessary to take up space on your resume withinformation that is not directly impacting toyour career. If you have submission in progress,or are working on texts that you know will bepublished at the later time, and they support yourqualifications for the job, include them on theresume under a sub-heading of 搒 ubmitted to(publication name)?or 搕 o be published in(publication name)? However, if you decide toinclude works in progress, be certain that theywill get published at some point in the future. This is mostly critical for freelance magazine,

newspaper or creative writers; do not list everyarticle you have submitted for publication, unless you are certain that it will get published. If your list of publication is fairly extensive,do not dismiss it completely from your resume. Youwant your employer to know that you have eitherpublished or are in the process of publishing yourwork. You should create a section within yourresume dedicated to publications. Don 抰 gooverboard with the number of publications youlist on your resume. List three to fivepublications, in reverse chronological order inthis section. This will give your employer an ideaof your work, the publications and audiences youhave reached. At the end of your publicationlisting, include a statement that tells theemployer a complete listing of publications canbe provided upon request. In your professionalsummary, or cover letter, you can indicate thetotal number of publications you 抳 e had in yourcareer. Create a separate document that includes

a complete listing of your publications, following the ASP style. You should make sure thatthe list of your publication credits otherauthors properly, as well. You should have a printout of this list, along with your resume that youcan bring to any job interview, or forward to thehiring manager at their request. In addition, ifasked about your publications, offer yourpotential employer a copy of any of your articlesfor their review (although if given theappropriate reference information, your employer,if interested, will be able to locate yourpublications on their own).Overall, disclose any information aboutpublications if it supports your career objectiveand highlights your qualifications for the job.Review the information you list carefully andmake sure that names and dates of publications arecorrect ?even minor mistakes can raise questionsabout your credibility.
