SRI LANKA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION AT FIFTY

 PRESENTATION BY  KAMALIKA PIERIS  At 50th anniversary celebration of the SLLA, Colombo, 2010.

Started as  Ceylon Library Association  on August 28, 1960  First President: S.C.Blok, Librarian University of Ceylon  1st Vice President: T.G .Piyadasa  2nd Vice President: Ms Margaret Gooneratne, Librarian, United States Information Centre, Colombo  Executive Committee : two representatives each from University, public, special , research and government libraries  Monthly meetings at USIS, Colombo

INCORPORATED as  Sri Lanka Library Association Act no 20 of 1974  SLLA Act no 7 of 2004  Further amendments under consideration

LOCATION  OPA Building, 700 sq feet.  well equipped office  meeting room cum computer center  Land at Depanama, Pannipitiya  On 30 year lease  Deed with SLLA  Building fund : Rs one lakh at present.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING  The Annual General Meeting, has been held regularly for the past thirty years. There have been no serious controversies regarding either Annual Report or annual audited accounts .  We have squeaky clean annual elections, held under the watchful supervision of the whole assembly.

ANNUAL SESSIONS National Conference On Library And Information Studies, (NACLIS)

 Our annual sessions was initially linked to the AGM as a half day event. it is now held separately as a full day event known as the National Conference on Library and Information studies.  there is international participation as well.

 PUBLICATIONS.  Sri Lanka Library Review  Quarterly Newsletter of the SLLA

 Sri Lanka Library Review contains our research observations  Both publications have been issued regularly.

 SLLA has acted on complaints received  Here is one current example. downgrading of salaries with resulting salary anomalies is taking place in several library authorities today. The SLLA has contacted one such authority and negotiations are in progress.

INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS CONDUCTED BY SLLA  IFLA /RASCO Regional Committee on Asia and Oceania  Mid conference meeting held at Hotel Renuka, Colombo, hosted by SLLA, 2003  UNESCO and Japanese Funds in Trust (JFIT) Expert meeting to develop a distance learning course for ICT, 2004  participants, Philippines, Australia, Japan, United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Estonia

INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS CONDUCTED BY SLLA  Regional workshop on web cataloguing 2004 utilizing CDS/ISIS  participants from Bangladesh, Nepal, India. Pakistan, Myanmar, Laos ,Sri Lanka  Regional workshop on creating a digital library using WIN/ISIS, Gen ISIS 2007  funded by Unesco Regional office in Bangkok

 Regional workshop train REFSALA Library Association leaders on Library advocacy and policy delvopetmnet. 2009, Funded by IFLA ALP with resource persons from New Zealand, USA, Nepal, and India. 63 participants.  Provincial workshop on the same topic at Uva Provincial Library Service Board at Badulla.

LIBRARY EDUCATION  SLLA course  first ever library training course in Sri Lanka started in 1961 as part time training course, later changed to academic course. based on the exams of the Library Association, England Intermediate level taught from 1964 Final level taught from 1973

TODAY  DIPLIS  Diploma in Library and Information Science  recognized by Ministry of Public Administration  parts 1,2,3  Sinhala, English Tamil  6 study centers, Colombo, Kandy,, Jaffna, Galle, Badulla, Batticaloa  DIPLIS ONLINE  DIPLIS POSTAL

LIBRARY EDUCATION - MALDIVES  Project 1 Library training for Maldives librarians  Period : 1996 to 2003  Sponsor: Government of Maldives  Project 2 Distance Education : 40 libraries  commenced 2003  last workshop to be in Sri Lanka with  practical training in setting up a library  Exams held in Maldives  Papers marked in Sri Lanka

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD)  Not limited to SLLA members but extended to all working librarians

ICT  COLA Course on Library automation commenced almost as soon as computers appeared in our libraries continued ever since  N.U.Yapa Deepali Talagala

Some IT workshops conducted between 2001-2009  Workshop on using computers for public librarians in Central province  Workshop on using computers for public librarians, North Central Province,. participants included those from Manampitiya, Hingurakgoda, Padaviya  Workshop on information security awareness. Lecturers were from Information Security Division of Sri Lanka Telecom  Workshop on audio visual material management and digital conversions

Some IT workshops conducted between 2001-2009  Several workshops on database publishing using Gen ISIS including creating an OPAC  Workshop on web designing  Workshop on Sinhala Unicode implementation for libraries  Six day course on MS office  10 rural public librarians trained in IT, and hardware donated to the libraries

Training was also provided in  Public relations ,(topics included leadership qualities, team building, Communication skills, platform skills and group dynamics, follow up seminars requested)  Library advocacy and policy development. (followed by 2 day workshop at Badulla provincial library service board)  Organizing libraries for children and young learners

TRAINING WAS ALSO PROVIDED IN…  Use and conservation of library collections  Current awareness products and services  Best office practice and communication skills  Total Quality Management TQM  Workshops and seminars for public, school, government librarians  in Colombo and outstations at Sabaragamuwa, Minipe, Ampara, Sammanthurai

Training was also provided in…  2 Day workshop on MS Office for 8 disabled soldiers of Sri Lanka Ranaviru Apparels

ASSISTANCE TO SPECIFIC LIBRARIES  SLLA has helped to upgrade individual libraries. Here are some examples.
