158 HIR AGANA /K ATAK ANA TABLES HIRAGANA/KATAKANA TABLES Japanese is written in three different script systems: kanji, hiragana, and katakana (see p.14). Kanji are Chinese pictograms that need to be learned individually, but hiragana and katakana are “syllabaries,” with each character representing a separate syllable. The full syllabaries are given here to help you work out the characters in a particular word. With time, you will become more familiar with the most common characters. For example, the character ヒ hi can become ピ pi, て te can become で de, and ほ ho can become ぽ po. In addition, a long dash (—) is used to lengthen katakana syllables. For example, the katakana character テ te is lengthened to テー teh by adding this dash, used in a word such as テーブル tehburu (table); and the character ピ pi is lengthened to ピー pih, used in a word such as コピー kopih (photocopy).
