NRIs IN FOCUSAUSTRALIA HONOURS INDIAN-ORIGIN SOLDIERSOn Remembrance Day 11 Nov 2017, a monument was unveiled at Sun-nybank RSL Brisbane to commemorate Indian participation in Austra-lia’s war efforts. The design features a large sphere representing theearth and the unification of humanity. The weight of the monumentembodies the heavy death toll of the wars, and the sadness thatviewers would feel. The missing piece of the sphere is intentional, asit symbolises the missing piece of history in which the story of the In-dian soldiers was previously omitted. The major element in the design,is an hundred-year-old artillery case, which is fashioned into “trenchart”, piercing through the centre of the sphere as it gently touches itscore – creating a water ripple effect within its reflective surface.Depicting a turban-clad Indian-origin soldier together with a main-stream peer, this monument will serve as a reminder and tribute to allAustralians of Indian heritage who served in our armed forces.Apart from the monument, in memory of the fallen Australian-Indiansoldiers, the committee has set up an educational bursary for highschool students valued up to $1000 a year. This financial support hasgone out to deserving students in the past two years and we hope tocontinue providing this assistance in coming years as well.FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND DEMENTIA SUPPORT GROUP LAUNCHED FOR INDIAN-AUSTRALIANSDementia is not one specific disease but is an umbrella mer’s is dementia. IELTS Reading Test Joseph Cherian Joseph Cherian is the consulting editor of ‘The Foreign- er’ magazine, and the author of several books, including Idiotic English and Idiomatic English.READING PASSAGE 3You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27–40, which are based on Reading Passage 3 below.LETTER FROM THE TITANICA. Over a century after the R.M.S. Titanic sank into the icy waters of the North Atlantic, artifacts from thedisaster—which claimed the life of 1,500 people—continue to captivate collectors and history buffs. OnOctober 21, 2017, a letter recovered from the wreckage broke a world record by selling for 126,000 Britishpounds, or about 166,000 U.S. dollars. The letter comes from Oskar Holverson, a first-class passenger andU.S. businessman who perished in the water. He’d written the letter to his mother on April 13, 1912, theday before the ship hit the iceberg that would take it down. Within a week of the Titanic’s sinking, recoveryships sailed to the wreckage site to collect personal effects and dead bodies, many of which were floatingat the surface because people had died in their life preservers. The letter was found on Holverson’s body, folded up in a notebook in his pocket, and was given to his mother.B. Holverson’s letter is unique in that “it is the only letter written on Titanic stationery to have actually sur-vived going into the North Atlantic” that we know of, says Andrew Aldridge, an auctioneer and valuer at theU.K. auction house that sold the letter, Henry Aldridge and Son. The correspondence is the most expensiveTitanic letter ever to be sold in pounds. The recently auctioned letter is also valuable because it describesthe ship, the food, and even fellow passenger John Jacob Astor, at the time the richest man in the world. “Helooks like any other human being even tho [sic] he has millions of money,” Holverson wrote of Astor. “Theysit out on deck with the rest of us.”C. Three years ago, the same auction house that sold Holverson’s letter auctioned the last known letter tobe written on the Titanic for £119,000. Before that, the auction house sold a letter written by violinist andTitanic band leader Wallace Hartley for £112,000. In contrast to Holverson’s letter, which was reclaimedfrom his person, Titanic’s “last letter” was carried onto a lifeboat in a survivor’s pocket, and Wallace’s letterwas sent at a mail stop in Queenstown, Ireland—now called Cobh—that Titanic made before crossing theAtlantic.D. Other artifacts from Titanic that have gone up for auction include menus, a kimono, and Hartley’s violin. But Paul Burns, vice president and curator for the Titanic Museum Attractions in Missouri and Tennessee, says that the letters are “probably the most poignant of the artifacts.” They give us a glimpse of how peoplewho survived thought of the ship before the disaster, as well as some of the last thoughts of the people whodied. January 2018 | 87
E. Even so, why is there still such interest in this specific tragedy, 105 years after it took place? After all, Titanicwas not the deadliest marine disaster, or even the deadliest peacetime disaster (in 1987, a Philippine passengerferry called the Dona Paz crashed into an oil tanker, killing as many as 4,000).F. Aldridge and Burns point out that the story of the Titanic has received a big boost from the movies; first withA Night to Remember in 1958, and then Titanic in 1997. In addition, people are often fascinated by the irony thatthe most famous ship in the world, which some considered “unsinkable,” failed to secure enough lifeboats before-hand in case something did go wrong. And even when it did, not all of the boats were filled to capacity.G. “The Titanic disaster is one of the greatest human interest stories in all of history,” Burns says. It makes uswonder not just why people did what they did that night, but how we would’ve reacted if we’d been there. “I wouldsay it’s human nature,” he says, “to want to link ourselves to this story.”QUESTIONS 27–31Reading Passage 3 has seven paragraphs, A–G.Which paragraph contains the following information?Write the correct letter, A–G, in boxes 27–31 on your answer sheet.27. the reason the letters were the most important of the artifacts recovered D28. historical stories interest people because it makes them wonder how they would have responded in similar situations G29. the reason Holverson’s letter was more important than another letter from the Titanic C30. how the letter was recovered A31. how one important passenger spent some of his time on the ship BQUESTIONS 32–35Do the following statements agree with the claims of the writer in Reading Passage 3?In boxes 32–35 on your answer sheet, writeYES if the statement agrees with the claims of the writerNO if the statement contradicts the claims of the writerNOT GIVEN if it is impossible to say what the writer thinks about this32. Holverson’s letter fetched the highest auction price because it was the last letter from the Titanic.33. If Titanic had enough lifeboats, then everyone would have survived.34. IELTS Writing Task 2You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.Write about the following topic:Cell phones should be allowed in schools. Silent cell phones won’t distract anybody. There will be no disruption ifthe students are required to keep their cell phones in their pockets and not use them for calling or texting exceptin an emergency. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.Write at least 250 words.MODEL ANSWERI fully agree with the statement that cell phones should be allowed in schools. School life is not the same as it wasduring the past two or three decades when there were no personal communication gadgets such as the cell phone.Nowadays, cell phones are such a normal part of a person’s daily life, that it is not right to ban its use in schools.Students need it to contact their parents if there is a need to call them during the school hours. Often during theschool hours, parents would like to know how their kids are doing and the cell phone enables them to speak totheir child directly and immediately without having to contact them through the office phone. Another importantuse of the cell phone in school is that If a student needs to stay back at school for some activity, he or she cancontact the parents to pick them up at a later time than usual.Students can be forbidden from using the phone during class hours, and they should also be required to keep theirphones always on silent mode in the school premises. But there is no valid reason why they should not be allowedto call their parents, or friends during the school break times, and after school finishes.Schools ban cell phones for the reason that they distract students from their studies. But how can phones distractany student if they are not used it during class hours? If cell phones distract students from their studies, then thephones will also distract teachers from their teaching. But teachers are allowed to bring cell phones to school anduse it when they are not teaching. January 2018 | 89
PTE Writing Test Steven Smith Masters in English (University of East London) Steven Smith is an English language trainer. He is writing his first book on new tech- niques of learning foreigner languages. He loves fishing and watching soccer. You will have 20 minutes to plan, write and revise an essay about the topic below. Your response will be judgedon how well you develop a position, organize your ideas, present supporting details, and control the elementsof standard written English. You should write 200–300 wordsSchool uniforms should be required. It reduces the need for teachers to be ‘clothes police’, for example, determin-ing whether shorts and skirts are too short, etc. Uniforms instill a sense of community and helps schools recognizethose who do not belong on campus.MODEL ANSWER:Wearing a uniform is a badge of pride, creates an identity for a school and is an important part of being a schoolstudent. Uniforms show that you are part of an organization. Wearing it says we’re all in this together. Also, if youwear your uniform with pride, it means you are respectful to the organization and support all that it stands for.Uniforms give students a sense of belonging to a particular school and create an identity for the school in thecommunity. A school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance. Uniforms helpstudents to prepare for occasions when they leave school and may have to dress smartly or wear a uniform.Perhaps most importantly, a uniform means students don’t have to worry about peer pressure when it comes totheir clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn’t so important. There is nocompetition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on stu-dents and parents. Potential bullies have one less target for their insults; it’s hard to make fun of what someone iswearing when you’re dressed exactly the same. Not only does it make getting dressed each morning a lot easier, but it sets senior students as role models foryounger students. I like uniforms because everyone is the same and no one can be left out by the way they aredressed. January 2018 | 91
PTE Reading Test 1MULTIPLE-CHOICE, CHOOSE MULTIPLE ANSWERSRead the text and answer the question by selecting all the correct responses. More than one response is correct.Scientists from The Open University (OU) have discovered a process that could explain the long-debatedmystery of how land features on Mars are formed in the absence of significant amounts of water. Experi-ments carried out in the OU Mars Simulation Chamber — specialised equipment, which is able to simulatethe atmospheric conditions on Mars — reveal that Mars’ thin atmosphere (about 7 mbar — compared to1,000 mbar on Earth) combined with periods of relatively warm surface temperatures causes water flowingon the surface to violently boil. This process can then move large amounts of sand and other sediment, which effectively ‘levitates’ on the boiling water. This means that, in comparison to Planet Earth, relativelysmall amounts of liquid water moving across Mars’ surface could form the large dune flows, gullies and otherfeatures, which characterise the Red Planet.Dr Jan Raack, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at The Open University, lead author of the research, said:“Whilst planetary scientists already know that the surface of Mars has ‘mass-wasting’ features -- such asdune flows, gullies, and recurring slope lineae -- which occur as a result of sediment transportation downa slope, the debate about what is forming them continues. Our research has discovered that this levitationeffect caused by boiling water under low pressure enables the rapid transport of sand and sediment acrossthe surface. This is a new geological phenomenon, which doesn’t happen on Earth, and could be vital to un-derstanding similar processes on other planetary surfaces. The sources of this liquid water will require moreobservational studies; however, the research shows that the effects of relatively small amounts of water onMars in forming features on the surface may have been widely underestimated. We need to carry out moreresearch into how water levitates on Mars, and missions such as the ExoMars 2020 Rover will provide vitalinsight to help us better understand our closest neighbour.”WHAT DOES THE READER OF THIS TEXT LEARN ABOUT LAND FEATURES ON MARS?Land features on Mars are different than those on earth because of the thin atmosphere. The surface of Mars is affected by the small amounts of liquid water moving across it.Sand is not transported across the surface of Earth by the levitation effect.Scientists had earlier thought that small amounts of water did not have any effect on forming features on Mars’surface. The big mystery for scientists was how land features on Mars were formed in the absence of significant amounts ofwater.92 | The Foreigner

You will also be able to familiarizeyourself with the different kinds of accents (é, è, ê).So, for this reason, we will start our first lesson by introducing yourself:“Bonjour! Mon nom est Claudine. Et vous?” (Hi! My name is Claudine. And you?)After the other person introduced himself or herself, it will be polite to answer:“Enchantée1 de faire votre connaissance.” (Nice to meet you.)In the first sentence of this dialogue, can you spot the words with the same meaning, from French to English? Youcan then start your own vocabulary. For example: Bonjour! = Hi! nom = name est = is et = and vous = you96 | The Foreigner
LEARN FRENCHAs for the second sentence, the words from French to English are not quite the same. Besides, the meaning of theexpression is the same and it would be useful to take note of it.So, let’s go back to our introduction dialogue. Why not ask the other person how is she/or he?“Comment allez-vous?” (How are you?)In general, the person will answer you:“Je vais très bien, merci. Et vous?” (I am very well, thank you. And you?)To whom you can reply:“Je vais bien aussi, merci.” (I am fine too, thanks)Here are new words you can add to your glossary: comment = how très = very merci = thank youYou will also notice that the punctuation marks are the same, from English to French, according to if it is an inter-rogative (?) or exclamative (!) sentence. To finish our first dialogue, we can wish a wonderful day to our new friend.“Bonne journée!” (Have a good day!) bonne = good journée = dayAnd in bonus, here are some other basic words you can add to your vocabulary: oui = yes non = no pardon = sorry s’il vous plaît = pleaseNow, have fun practicing these news words and expressions, while waiting for the next lesson. Next month, we willtake a look at pronouns and the most common verbs, so you can slowly start to make your own sentences.BONNE JOURNÉE! NO MATTER HOW LITTLE OF THE LANGUAGE YOU KNOW, FRENCH-SPEAKING PEOPLE WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL THAT A STRANGER IS INTERESTED IN THEIR LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, SOTHEY WILL ALSO DO THEIR BEST TO FACILITATE THE COMMUNICATION. By doing so, it createsa dual screen handset, but only requires one displaypanel, which will keep costs down and and the compo-nent count low.
