The Space Race The Space race began soon after World War II as the USA and the Soviet Union (Russia) wanted to make explorations into space and on to the Moon. The technology that needed to be developed was immense but the advantage in getting into space was even bigger. One big challenge is developing the massive amount of rocket power needed to get a satellite, dog, monkey or man into space. The Russians were better at this in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Another challenge was to develop all the electronics, communications and computing power to make a launch successful. The Americans were better at this. We have obtained this photo of a Russian Cosmonaut who we need to speak to urgently as he has been selling secrets about the Space Race. The Secret Nobody knows who this astronaut is, but one thing is for sure - nobody is happy with him for selling secrets. cubicmagazine.com

The Code and the Clue We don’t know the name of the bad astronaut but we have been sent a coded message by someone who interestingly wants to remain anonymous. The message is the first name of the secret-selling astronaut we seek. YOUR CODED WORD IS ZO V C V R The person who sent us this code was in a rush and used a very simple rule which is that the letters in the alphabet have been reversed, so A=Z, B=Y and C=X etc. Can you decode the name of the spaceman we need to find? Answers at cubicmagazine.com/answers Break the Code

Space Travel So far, people have travelled into space and to the Moon and back. It only takes about three days to travel to the Moon through space, but to get to Mars would take about seven months. The problem with that is the astronauts would need food, water, oxygen to breathe and other supplies to last all the way there and all the way back. Maybe astronauts could grow food on Mars. What do you think? DID YOU KNOW The International Space Station (ISS) has been in Space for over t wenty years and orbits the Earth once every one and a half hours cubicmagazine.com
