Singapore Mathematics Education with Singapore Asia Publishers The learning of mathematics should train the mind, and help students develop the capacity to think logically, abstractly, critically and creatively. These are important 21st century competencies. The Singapore Primary Mathematics Syllabus aims to enable all students to: acquire mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use and continuous learning in mathematics; \" develop thinking, reasoning, communication, application and metacognitive skills through a \" mathematical approach to problem-solving; and \" build confidence and foster interest in mathematics. The Singapore mathematics framework stresses 5 inter-related components: conceptual understanding; \" skills proficiency; and \" mathematical processes. \" It also gives due emphasis to: attitudes; and \" metacognition. \" The central focus of the mathematics framework is mathematical problem solving, that is, using mathematics to solve problems. It also reflects 21st century competencies. Mathematics Syllabus, Curriculum Planning and Development Division, MOE, Singapore, 2012. ………………………………………………………………………………………… Supporting STEAM-based learning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) plays an important role in Singapore’s education system and is built around core elements such as problem-based and rigorous learning. Students are continually trained to use appropriate scientific knowledge, technology and apply mathematics to real-world situations. This is introduced at the lower primary levels through inquiry-based and real world problem-based learning, and becomes increasingly rigorous and challenging at the higher levels. The questions prepared in our Mathematics books support the learning outcome: encourage the creative application of content knowledge, and as a result, help a student develop powerful critical thinking skills.

Mathematics series ACQUIRING CONCEPTS AND DEVELOPING PROFICIENCY THROUGH PRACTICE “To develop proficiencies in mathematics skills, students should have opportunities to use and practise the skills. These skills should be taught with an understanding of the underlying mathematical principles and not merely as procedures.” Mathematics Syllabus, Curriculum Planning and Development Division, MOE, Singapore, 2012. CONQUER MATHEMATICS provides a student with substantial exercises broadly grouped into numerical, algebraic, geometric, statistical probabilistic and analytic concepts. These serve to help a student master basic mathematical skills in order to apply appropriate mathematics concepts as they advance in their learning. 7879:;<*.=*7>?;[email protected]'#$ 7879:;<*.=*7>?;[email protected]'#$ 7879:;<*.=*7>?;[email protected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with ADAPTIVE LEARNING with ADAPTIVE LEARNING with ANALYTICS INTELLIGENCE 1%&23%%2 ANALYTICS INTELLIGENCE ,-./0--/ ANALYTICS INTELLIGENCE 4#&56##5 *+\",-\"#%./0-1.21031%)).\"45.'&210+% . *+\",-\"#%./0-1.21031%)).\"45.'&210+% . *+\",-\"#%./0-1.21031%)).\"45.'&210+% . /0-1.1%)-,#).6'#$.-4,'&'#%5.21\"(#'(%.04 /0-1.1%)-,#).6'#$.-4,'&'#%5.21\"(#'(%.04 /0-1.1%)-,#).6'#$.-4,'&'#%5.21\"(#'(%.04 Diagnostic Tests for progressive assessment with NUADU Diagnostic Tests for progressive assessment with NUADU Diagnostic Tests for progressive assessment with NUADU Additional activities and worksheets !\"#$%&\"'()*(\"&+,&-\"(#).'\"&)#/( Additional activities and worksheets !\"#$%&\"'()*(\"&+,&-\"(#).'\"&)#/( Additional activities and worksheets !\"#$%&\"'()*(\"&+,&-\"(#).'\"&)#/( Lesson plans available at onlineresources.sapgrp.com/teachers 01*2$-$\"&-3($&(4,)+\"4,)$-#(-*&-\"0)# Lesson plans available at onlineresources.sapgrp.com/teachers 01*2$-$\"&-3($&(4,)+\"4,)$-#(-*&-\"0)# Lesson plans available at onlineresources.sapgrp.com/teachers 01*2$-$\"&-3($&(4,)+\"4,)$-#(-*&-\"0)# 51*6$'\"(\"##\"&)$,7(8.\"#)$*&#(2*1( 51*6$'\"(\"##\"&)$,7(8.\"#)$*&#(2*1( 51*6$'\"(\"##\"&)$,7(8.\"#)$*&#(2*1( 01,-)$-\"()*(9.$7'(-*&2$'\"&-\" 01,-)$-\"()*(9.$7'(-*&2$'\"&-\" 01,-)$-\"()*(9.$7'(-*&2$'\"&-\" :''$)$*&,7('$%$),7(1\"#*.1-\"#()*( :''$)$*&,7('$%$),7(1\"#*.1-\"#()*( :''$)$*&,7('$%$),7(1\"#*.1-\"#()*( -*407\")\"(7\",1&$&%(\";0\"1$\"&-\" -*407\")\"(7\",1&$&%(\";0\"1$\"&-\" -*407\")\"(7\",1&$&%(\";0\"1$\"&-\" <)\"0=93=#)\"0(#*7.)$*&#(01*6$'\"(,( <)\"0=93=#)\"0(#*7.)$*&#(01*6$'\"(,( <)\"0=93=#)\"0(#*7.)$*&#(01*6$'\"(,( -*407\")\"(,&'(8.$->(1\"2\"1\"&-\"()*( -*407\")\"(,&'(8.$->(1\"2\"1\"&-\"()*( -*407\")\"(,&'(8.$->(1\"2\"1\"&-\"()*( ,&#?\"1#(2*1(#\"72=,##\"##4\"&) ,&#?\"1#(2*1(#\"72=,##\"##4\"&) ,&#?\"1#(2*1(#\"72=,##\"##4\"&) ;4)#\"4#.1%\",G#'&%. ;4)#\"4#.1%\",G#'&%. ;4)#\"4#.1%\",G#'&%. DEVELOPING ESSENTIAL PROFICIENCIES IN MATHEMATICAL SKILLS “Thinking skills and heuristics are essential for mathematical problem-solving. Thinking skills are skills that can be used in a thinking process. Heuristics are general rules of thumb of what students can do to tackle a problem when the solution to the problem is not obvious.” Mathematics Syllabus, Curriculum Planning and Development Division, MOE, Singapore, 2012. | CONQUER | Thinking Skills and Heuristics focuses on the underlying processes and strategies essential to problem solving. Based on a spiral structure, the series introduces various skill sets and builds upon them as the level increases. Thinking skills include classifying, comparing, analysing parts and whole, identifying patterns and relationships, induction, deduction, generalising and spatial visualisation. Heuristics include drawing a diagram, tabulating, making a guess or a supposition, walking through the process by acting it out, working backwards, simplifying the problem and considering special cases. “Mathematical modelling is the process of formulating and improving a mathematical model to represent and solve real-world problems. Through mathematical modelling, students learn to deal with ambiguity, make connections, select and apply appropriate mathematics concepts and skills and identify assumptions and reflect on the solutions to real-world problems and make informed decisions based on given or collected data.” Mathematics Syllabus, Curriculum Planning and Development Division, MOE, Singapore, 2012. | CONQUER | Model Drawing is specially conceived and developed to encapsulate the essence of mathematical modelling and harness a student’s cognitive skills to solve word problems. Modelling, in particular, is the process of formulating and improving a mathematical model to solve real-world problems. A student learns to read a problem, assess the known and unknown, draw a model to represent the problem, and in the process, simplify the problem to see a solution. Clear notes and instructions serve to help students understand the concept behind each model drawing and exercises are designed to teach the use of these models for problem solving.

DEVELOPING METACOGNITIVE AWARENESS AND STRATEGIES “At primary levels students develop process skills through problem solving. They learn to lay out their working logically, communicate their thoughts clearly and reason inductively by observing patterns, similarities and di!erences. They formulate methods and strategies to solve problems and develop the habit of checking reasonableness of their answers against real-world context.” Mathematics Syllabus, Curriculum Planning and Development Division, MOE, Singapore, 2012. | CONQUER | 101 Must-know Challenging Maths Word Problems presents word problems that test on important concepts where a student can learn to apply general mathematical problem-solving strategies and heuristics confidently. The detailed solutions will enable a student to learn when and how to use strategies, reflect on what they are doing and to make changes when necessary. | CONQUER | Exam-Standard Mathematics Word Problems with Terry Chew sharpens a student’s mathematical thinking through non-routine problem sums often encountered in national examinations. This series infuses teaching of problem solving using methods with a strong element of Mathematical Olympiad, thus giving students the flexibility and versatility in extending their thinking skills. | CONQUER | Problem Sums: A* in Singapore Mathematics presents unconventional methods to enable a student to think critically and reason inductively to solve mathematical problems. The strategies introduced in this book are specific skill-based methods and emphasises the need to learn and remember di#erent strategies for di#erent question types.

ICT-ENABLED LEARNING “Technology is advancing rapidly, and we can harness ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) to transform education. In fact, school systems all over the world are all experimenting…Let us now aim for a breakthrough: to harness ICT to make learning productive and engaging for all our students, across all our schools.” Extract, Keynote address by Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, at the MOE Work Plan Seminar 2013.
